Once our basic needs have been met, money contributes very little to our overall happiness and well-being. But more than that, there are actually a number of inherent dangers in possessing riches. Or maybe I should say, at the very least, there are better things to be than rich.

I grew up in a family where we got to experience things. Travel, camped, hiking, flying… all kinds of things. I couldn’t tell you what toys I got at Christmas or birthdays. And I have fond memories spending time with my parents and siblings. 😊 And we were never rich. We had everything we needed.

I was never interested in wealth because i wasn't keen on material goods. I learned early on that wealth, and stuff, comes with responsibility. I was frugal Instead, valued my freedom over working more, and i retired early.

Worked saved, bought a used car 5000 dollars cash. Worked saved, bought a used house 32,000 dollars cash. Eat like a king, healthy as a horse and not in debt to anyone or anything. Money is something that hardly ever even crosses my mind. Work save live within your means. Think maybe a lot of people think they need what they don't need and that problem is exponential multiplied by thinking they need it yesterday.

When I start to wish I had more wealth, I remind myself that I have more than most people in the world and most people in history. I’m already rich. 😊 I agree that the desire for wealth is a dangerous trap. It can keep me from spending time on the things I really ought to value.

I love what you said about contentment. It is much more valuable than being rich. I am thankful that my needs are met, but I would pick all of the things you said over what many people consider being rich. I do consider myself very rich and very blessed, but I am not talking about money when I say that. Thank you for the wonderful messages you always give. I do very much enjoy being minimal, and your videos have been a big part of that.

I'm not an American and I agree with your sentiments. However in the US the ethos of many, especially the young, seems to be "get rich or die trying". This needs to change. The USA's obsession and pre-occupation with billionaires, particulalrly the tech ones, doesn't help.

Once upon a time this was a lesson that was taught to us by our parents. Unfortunately this isn't the case anymore. In a better world this should be shown in all schools around the country. Shown over and over until the message got thru and was absorbed into the soul of all who were lucky enough to see this.

100% agree. However, it is kind of hard to watch this video coming from a financially secure, middle class, white male with a home and a family. I too am white, middle class with a home, btw, but I think it's too easy to say these statements. I'd like to hear someone who is a "have not", down on their luck with a lifetime of struggling to respond to this video. Maybe they feel the same as you. But maybe some people have been placed in situations that to get into this mindset is very difficult. I love the line from Leonardo Dicapro's character in The Aviator who tells an elitist family who says "we don't care about money"... he replies, ""That's because you have it."

Eccl 5:10 20 years ago, I was a self-made millionaire, today I am only a step away from homelessness. Back then, my value attracted a circle of people who were (and remain) cruel, cold, and only interested in more for themselves. Today, my lack of value has attracted people who are warm, generous, and kind. We look out for each other, support each other through our many concerns, and look for ways to help others. Even with the distresses of inadequate provision, I am far more rich than 20y ago.

The main problem of this world is that poor don't want to fight and create a world with more balanced average salaries, they just wish and hope to be part of the 0,1% millionaires. Also, unfortunately modern world doesn't accept you to be content with average. For example, even basic shitty jobs are more and more demanding with objectives, meetings, action plans, reports and so on that at the end of day just make simple jobs tiring and some that used to be fun are no more.

IKR. Stop the world. I wanna get off. Lol. My money grubbing, selfish and grandiose relatives. 🙄 Good grief. I guess in some weird way they really showed me first hand what NOT to pursue or be like. What I noticed about being around it and them the most WAS the pride and the judging and the “poor shaming” and the cold, hard emptiness. I have to say that it turned me off from “luxury.” It was almost like it had no soul. As if they traded money for their their soul. I found it rather depressing. You go eat the fancy food. You get the best table. Ride in the fancy cars. Fly on the private Cessna. Wear the fancy clothes. Everyone kisses your butt or entreats you for favors. You don’t know who your real friends are. You stay at the fancy resort. You get all the pampering etc. The maid cleans your big fancy house. And you have the masseuse come to your home. (Bcuz you’re gonna need it with all of that stress). And everyone goes “wow.” Razzle Dazzle. I’d rather be going on a Safari or having some other soul warming beatnik adventure. That’s when I was the most happy. I guess I was just like a fish out of water and it never suited me. I never made that kind of money but I was in that world. And Solomon was right. It’s all so empty. You have all that ya know…but then what? Like the rich man who keeps wanting to build an even bigger barn. Then he dies and he’s poor as dirt in his soul begging poor Lazarus for a single drop of water. It never ends (or is never satisfied) yet never gets you to Heaven either…like the Tower of Babel.

MARK 10: Verses 21 to 25 (21) Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. [22] And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. [23] And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! [24] And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! [25] It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
