There Are So Many Velociraptors In Mongolia! Meet Another! | Kuru kulla

It’s now been a little while since the second season of Prehistoric Planet has been released. One of the animals that had the briefest appearances was a dromaeosaur by the name of Kuru, which just so happened to be named relatively recently. The real story behind this interesting theropod is much longer than its most recent description, and it shows that the Gobi Desert was crawling with raptors.

One thing I noticed from Prehistoric Planet is that Kuru's chicks actually look different from Velo's chick. They instead used the same model as the Pyroraptor that appeared later in the Ocean episode.

I mean we have plenty of arid Gondwanan formations with multiple similar sized species of abelisaur, which seemed to be quite similar in body plan etc so perhaps there was just a large diversity of velociraptorids. I mean we have both protoceratops and the larger udanoceratops getting around about the same place and time. So perhaps there was just a high level of diversity in the Gobi.

Did Kuru live contemporaneously with Velociraptor? Or is it possible that they were descendants/sires, like how Geosternbergia was a direct ancestor to Pteranodon Longiceps?

Paleontologist who named Kuru (James) here - there are a lot of difficulties with determining how old the different rock layers in Mongolia are, so to make a long story short, we don't know. We think Kuru and Shri lived slightly more recently than Velociraptor, but it's possible they lived at the same time. In either case, Kuru was probably not a direct descendent because it belongs to a different branch of the family tree.

Why were the dromeosaurs so diverse and succesful in ancient mongolia? Was the country a big desert/stepe in the cretaceous?

As to the first question I’m not sure, but to answer your second, yes, the djadochta formation at least shows that the pelaeoenvironment that velociraptor lived in was desert-like.

In parts, though in most media it is depicted too dry. It would have been wetter, with several extensive water ways.
