Being able to understand the openings song title as soon as i saw it made it feel like those 8 years in a gaelscoil and 6 years of honours irish were worth it

I felt like I Love You was their masterpiece the first time I heard it. It just has such a phenomenal build. Boys In The Better Land got me into these guys and seeing them travel from that point to here has been a delight, they've really fleshed out their sound. Roy's Tune is a close second though, staggering tune.

I'm kinda obsessed with this album. Especially the three track run of Skinty Fia, I Love You and Nabokov which is amazing. I can only hope this record gets the band the attention they deserve.

Just some things I realised you may not know as Amerian: Ireland is not in Britain. Irish is a different language to gaelic. If I notice more as I watch I will add them

‘I love you’ on this album is phenomenal. It hits every young adult hard because it speaks volumes about irelands current political situation. We’re run by out of touch old landlords and it’s all so they can make money from high rent prices. (And much much more) There’s such a culture around voting for the “right” political party. There’s references in the track and so much I could write on it but ‘I love you’ encapsulates it all with Grian’s poetic lyrics. Seen them live recently, the real deal

The lead singers family being from england doesn't mean anything for his accent. As a Scot, his accent is very clearly Irish.

Fontaines DC are a very good band, but this album is fantastic. My family are from Dublin, so I bought tickets to see them in Dublin. Have seen them in England three times, they are wonderful.

Love the shoegaze-y elements that they have added to their sound, as post-punk and shoegaze typically work really well together. Great review, I'm pleasantly surprised how much these guys keep touching people every album cycle, gives me hope. Nabokov blew me away on first listen, don't want to name bands because I feel comparisons do injustice but to my ears there are several decades of rock history buried in that song (some of which is that "proto-punk" you've mentioned) , which to me shows the good taste these guys have.. back vocals that kick in mid song remind me of a certain legendary Irish band I don't want to mention either :). Also I believe the line you're looking for was "I'll be your dog in the corner" which is quite strong and grotesque at the same time within the powerful instrumental context of what's going on. These guys are not fetishizing sadness though, the whole thing feels more like a true observation of the world around to me so that a more hopeful one could be constructed.

The new Honeyglaze album that dropped tonight also was produced by Dan Carey, definitely recommend giving them a listen, I loved the singles.

Funnily enough I actually bumped into Tom Coll at a music festival in Brixton last year. Such a lovely guy and an incredible drummer. Glad this is their best album to date.

Wow yes, completely agree about Tom and his drumming. This band specifically I'm so drawn to the drumming; I spoke to him for a few minutes and he's also incredibly nice to boot. Honestly they all are, but I do love his drumming

You are an American chauvanist!

When the beatles and the stones sang, no matter how world beating they were, they used black American voices. Which was great, cause it pushed those voices forward, the stones are why lots of white bands went for it. The kinks and pink Floyd sang in English. Fontaines DC were given the bravery to sing as they did as a result of hearing Girl Band (check them) and The Pogues. The Pogues are from London, English dwelling ex pats who sing their Irish hearts out. Shane McGowan is a god like performer ,but he is English. I draw inspiration from that.

As a rural Scottish man in the big city, I really resonate with a lot of this lp. The reductionism of the Scottish culture is depressing to see over time too and just made this lp hit soo much harder for me

I think ‘Skinty’ is more of a slang term used in mainly Irish speaking areas in the west - there tends to be variations in the types of words that people use when speaking Irish depending if you’re from Donegal, Connacht, or Munster. ‘Fía’ is a definitive translation of a deer so I’d say they were being honest when they said Tom’s grandmother used it as a curse word

I love that rock is trying to make a comeback and especially as Post Punk. I grew up with the Cure, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen etc. I hear a lot of this mixed in with the Strokes too. Fontaines are gritty and creative. I see a great future for them.

Upon first listen this feels like the direct aftermath of the feelings portrayed on A Hero's Death. Like your right this is a very sad record, I can tell they are being disillusioned with their homeland and what the world means to them at the moment. This record feels a lot 'larger' and lush compared to the last two, great choice in production. My favorite songs gotta be the title track, nobokov, and big shot. Also cheers I'm originally from upstate NY as well if you know the corning/Elmira area down south

quite the damn amazing album

Just found your channel, I recommend LIILY they're an American band that really give me that garage rock revival feel like strokes and hives and vines and them. Especially their latest album, give them a try if you haven't

I really loved this album… a lot moodier than the first two, and I think it has some of their most interesting ideas so far

I think he’s a little bit of the Gallegher’s in his delivery, that might be what you’re picking up.

Skinty not skinny! Good review though, very funny to hear you butchering all the Irish pronunciations, good effort though. Fia is deer and skinty being a word simmilar to damned would make complete sense. Also just on the whole them condemning aspects of Catholicism becuase of living in London instead, I'd disagree with this point, inside Ireland we are already very aware of the issues with catholicism, and there's often lots of criticism of it and the culture it has created, no need to be living outside of Ireland to see it! I love you is by far my favourite song, it's lovely to hear a song so obviously Irish in popular media. Also Ireland is not a brittish colony, or English, completely independent country. I'd say the line 'I don't wanna see the queen I already sing her song' would be relating to the fact that they are living in London, thereby 'singing her song' through living there. And that pissed them off enough already that they don't want to see her face. Not saying anything on u2 album, already commented three times!

You should check out all of Dan Carey’s work with speedywonderground. He really has been propping up the most exciting music to come out of England from the past 5 years. I’m fairly sure he was even going to produce ants from up there, but Covid got in the way

You get yourself to dublin I've a ticket for you vicar st November and we have a beer and talk about this. I got irish people who don't like the dub accent don't like how they are now. But I'm not from ireland and I'm going to the pixies next week Ivegah gardens. So lots to talk about.

Man i know this is a long shot but i would love to hear your thoughts on the new Ransom album No Rest for the Wicked. A real hidden gem rapper whos a mix of Ka and Benny the Butcher. Dropping consistently good albums filled with a lot of grown men content. I know most of the true hip hop heads check his music out but he needs every bit of help he can get because its criminal for the man to be so underplayed.

Enjoyed your review. You're brave to attempt to interpret those songs, they have so many layers to them with all kinds of meanings but that's what makes great songs. I agree Skinty Fia is a magnificent album. Coming from an Irish family and growing up in England through "The Troubles" in the 70's and then coming of age during the Punk era not hard to see why I would like this album and this band so much. Or maybe I'm just a pretentious "knobshite" to coin a phrase.

My only critique of your critique is your explanation of the Irish/English/British accent stuff, but as an American I don’t expect you to pick up on the subtle differences, although as a language teacher I might… Although chatten has an English parent and was born in England, he was raised in Dublin. He has a pure dub accent, there is no Englishness to it. Hope I don’t come across as a defensive Irishman, I fkn hate that, just pointing it out. I also believe chatten and the band in general have a disdain for England and are pretty republican (in an Irish sense not American) in their beliefs. And rightly so..

I’m obsessed with this album, but agree that Jackie down the line is the weakest song on it. I was worried when they released it as the first single. What are they hearing that we aren’t? In saying that, I like it way better now as part of the album and not a stand alone song.

I don't want to be rude or sound aggressive but that's my take on the album's theme: I think it isn't a displacement album but it is an album about Irish displacement. I think it is better to not generalize it since the album is definitely talking about the Irish case, trying to put a light on their particular case, and to generalize it by calling it a displacement album is to empty their discourse. Again, I apologize for an early for any aggressive tone my comment might have. English isn't my mother language and something might be lost in translation.

Sorry Skye. I love your videos but I’m baffled how you could think they sound English 😂 Manchester and Liverpool are very close together and share characteristics so I understand not hearing that right away. But Irish is very different sound to the English.

They certainly didn't just make up the meaning of the title, the Irish language has thousands of such sayings mostly lost to time and oppression sadly.

Ireland isn't as you describe it, anymore. The Catholic Church have lost nearly all their power. I think their music targets the worldwide fashion for caring about no-one but yourself. Your idea about what the band is about is based on something that no longer exists. Irish people are very modern people and are much more educated and worldly than Americans are. Bur i can tell your heart's in the right place.

As far as this review ..your criticism about a culture, politics and religion you apparently know nothing about is ridiculous and on a pre school level.
