Along the papier-mâché offering shops and dried seafood vendors on Queen’s Road West, a paw or a tail may just stick out within the treasure trove of glass jars, paper trinkets and plastic wrappings. Dutch photographer Marcel Heijnen seizes his chance to shoot it. In these mere alleyways and architectural ruins, time stands still and shop cats dwell.
Hong Kong has developed into a modern metropolis the last two decades. Yet to Marcel, much of the old world remained in Sai Ying Pun. When he first lived here in 1995, he started shooting for his “Residue” collection, admiring the textual quality that this place exhibited. He left and came back years later in 2015, then in 2023.
