I always think about the fact that I have a chronic allergic fungal sinusitis, meaning I can’t be infected with any other mold or fungi. So I’d survive both the cordyceps virus and this. It makes me feel better sometimes

@@Anonyomus_commenter whatever medical complicated may occur are nothing compared to becoming a zombie. The plot to the last of us is literally them trying to find a cure. Whenever the cure comes into existence, it'll be useful. Such a simple cure, a competitive fungus that can outcompete the cordyceps would completely solve the crisis.

I was thinking similar to this but maybe they didnt "throw" the fungus spore bu "ejected" the spores from the mouth or something. Any normal person would assume "flour" and "throwing" over spores and ejecting/vomiting if they got hit with it without seeing it happen themselves.

Personally I interpreted the "a guy threw flour on me" as that not actually being flour, but rather the spores this man was releasing. That's where it connects to the other case because in the antopsy they said they thought a gas had been released but really it was spores. I can't remember if they mentioned the color but I always imagined the gas to be a pale gray, kinda like flour.

I think the reason that the police report goes crazy at the end of vol 1 is because of what happened to the original patients. When patient two died, 30 mins into the autopsy they spewed out spores. I think that the police officer that unalived gomez got some spores and during the write up they kicked in, leading to the tangent about smiling.

33:16 Microbiology major here, just have to correct when he distinguishes fungi from viruses and bacteria as living, bacteria are also living things, they’re prokaryotes and are very much living cells. Based on what you go on to say, I think the term that would more accurately describe what you’re trying to articulate is that most fungi are usually multicellular organisms, which makes them more complex Edit: Even a single cellular fungi species would be more complex as it is a Eukaryote, and Eukaryotes are more complex cells compared to Prokaryotes (larger cells, membrane bound organelles like the nucleus, etc…)

Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter in charge of opening the channels for the synapsis to have place. If this channels want to be closed, the body produces an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which degrades acetylcholine. This enzyme is produced on a set amount, intended to be fully consumed in the degradation. If the amount of acetylcholine increases drasticly, the body will not be able to produce enough acetylcholinesterase to degrade it all, leaving the channels open. If this happens to occur anywhere inside the limbic system, let's say, the amygdala, it can produce a constant, uninterrupted state of intense euphoria and irritability.

The disease here is the smile and aggression symptoms - which "they" are concerned could emerge in different variants. Yes, you are at risk of contracting the "fungus" within 10ft, but by proxy, if you contract the fungus, you are also at risk of contracting the unknown disease. Therefore, use of the word "disease" when describing the symptomatic problem, is actually correct 😋

So the music that plays at 17:00 is pavane pour une infante defunte also known as Pavane for a Dead Princess. It is basically a piece that is played when someone you love or someone you care about is about to die or has died and you want one final moment with them even though the situation is helpless. According to myth, the piece got its name from being played during the time a princess was dying/dead and the people mourned her with this song.

Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter involved in muscle contraction. So it seems like the facial muscle spasms are due to the acetylcholine, and the same substance is somehow affecting the amygdala and making the people aggressive

This probably isn’t much but I noticed at about 22:05, when the person says “I am not.”, obviously stating they are not happy but notice there is a period there. Then the phrase “Behind this forced smile” appears implying they might just be putting on a happy face. But notice when that phrase appears, the period in the phrase before disappears. That would make the full phrase “I am not behind this forced smile” implying that they aren’t controlling it, and after the next phrase appears, the period reappears. We obviously already know that they aren’t controlling the smile but it’s a nice detail that, if intentionally put there to mean that, I found pretty cool lol

9:00 speaking of dark alleys, one time I went down one. Spooky dark alley. Only one place the whole alley had its lights on. The door was wide open, the windows were perfectly clear, nobody inside was visible and there was no furniture except for a single tiny painting on a wall that I had nightmares about for weeks, and there was chanting and drums coming from somewhere inside.

The man at 17:44 is known to be seen in multiple people’s dreams, there have been signs in different countries in Europe that have been asking who the man is. No one knows who he is but a lot of people have seen him in the dreams before seeing a picture of him. This picture is a bit different than the man that I think of though but I think that they took inspiration from him.

In the Last of Us game...its the spores in the air. The fungus zombies even develop bits that specialize in producing and distributing the spores into the air. Many parts of the game require you to wear a gas mask to avoid said spores. In the tv series, they changed it to being in the bread because having the actors in gas masks would make it hard for the audience to relate to what they were seeing on tv.

27:32 i think what happened was that the flour affected the dog and then the dog affected Shaun. though i think the "flour" was probably actually a cloud of spores that came from his mouth. also the whole "only happens at night" thing checks out bc he said he was walking at night right?

9:12 when i was a junior and senior in high school (im a girl) i worked for my local fair as an agriculture ambassador (i worked in the barn/animal area, like giving out ribbons telling people where to go and just helping) anyways point being at this point in my life i didn’t own a car so i used to be forced to walk home,, and as local fairs are this one was in like a park but off a highway and the fastest way to get home was ducking between dark alleys in miami,,, it was so scary i met many a sketchy characters luckily nothing ever happened more than just druggies having strange conversations with me. but yea

9:30 Well if you think about it, the only reason a dark alley is a threat is because there's already dangerous humans in the dark alley, those are the people with the instinct to go into the dark alley, so if you're with someone who has a sudden urge to enter the dark alley you happen to be next to, maybe you should begin distancing yourself from the individual.

signal numbers themselves sounded like 2, 18, 26, 15, 19, 26, 9, 20, 13, 18, 8, 25, 4, 8, 19, 2 No clue what they mean tho Since they don't go above 26 i suspect the first conversion is to standard letter which gets you BRZOSZITM RHYDHSB But i got no clue where to go from there

Oh man i can relate to the chocolate addiction. The struggle is real. I hadnt heard of this series, so it was fascinating to have a good look and Matpats & Ash's perspective/banter on it. Its a very cool well-written little series, if dark.

19:40 MatPat mentions the background music of Shaun's log. I don't know if it was mentioned yet, but the piano piece being played during these logs is named "Pavane pour un infante défunte" (Pavane for a Dead Princess) by Maurice Ravel. One of my favorite, somber and emotional pieces to perform. I don't know exactly the significance of its use in Smile Tapes, but it could either be: 1. The name, suggesting/hinting towards Shaun's eventual succumbing of the fungus and death or perhaps, 2. While the name implies that Ravel wrote the piece to mourn a loss, it was actually a simple musical number for an actual princess to perform in court, similar to a ballet. Shaun is an important character to the series in some regard, and could be seen as the catalyst/main actor for the New Year's Day mass homicide of '95. But hey, that's just a theory, a film theory iirc Can't wait to see part 2!

happen't is how I imagined it. I looked up on merriam webster to see a close word antonym to saddened which is gladden or gladdened in this case. So...yeah. Weirdly, the past tense of happy is happied. No one ever says that.
