Apparently nobody remembered that the game begins with you reading the diary of your dead father, in which he describes his "failed experiments". Nothing about the game suggests it was simply a dream. Chris started reading the notes his father left (beginning of the game) and started unburing forgotten memories and tortures (ending of the game). After that, the Salvation ending gives the understanding that, indeed, "Son-Chris" went to the city to see how the place was and to remember the memories which were buried in his mind - what is absolutely normal in cases of trauma. In one of the notes, the Doctor ("Dad-Chris") says that he wants to see "her" again - "her" being Aneira, the woman that you met in the beginning of the game (the beginning of your "life", as Aneira being your mom). It is unclear if, when talking to Aneira in the cafe, we're living a memory of "Dad-Chris" mixed with memories of "Son-Chris" _OR_ if "Son-Chris" is talking to his already dead mother. Both scenarios explain the sudden change in scenario (from colorful to black and white) after you plug in the fuses and her "death"/disappearance from the cafe. Either way, the scene at the cafe wasn't "reality". The same thing happens when you're driving your car: everything is colored (as in the present) and suddenly turns to black and white (as living past memories). For the same exact reason, when you leave the city, you see the world in a colored way, and there is even a citizen around (2:07:36). Anyways. "Dad-Chris" became obsessed with the idea of trying to contact her dead wife/your mom (Aneira) again and started experimenting on you (Son-Chris), but all the efforts and the human lives end up being wasted. That's why he writes, in his diary, that his experiments were a failure. Besides all that, Helen helped you escape the facility because, well, you were a fckng child being used as a guinea pig by your insane dad. PS: There is a secret ending to the game, if you decide to search for it. It is a very short cutscene, so not really worth replaying the game because of it, in my opinion.

At the end you are supposed to notice the town is “back to normal”, that you were seeing a warped reality of it. Its why you hear someone sneezing in the town. You did visit the town, but the character had a mental breakdown as their repressed memories and experiences in that machine flooded back to them.

Basically that rock was emitting something that made the communication with spirits possible. Chris had psychic abilities (maybe from the rock?), so his father started experimenting with him after his mom passed away because he wanted to get her back. But when Helen helped him escape, the psychic link he had with that place wasn't severed, and the spirits of the people who passed there were trapped. Chris went back, but it wasn't exactly a dream. It was more like he was experiencing reality in another level, because of his psychic abilities. Helen's spirit guided Chris to sever the link, so everyone, including him, could be free.

hey insym, just wanted to say im glad youre playing more unique horror games lately

I think what happened was when Chris left/was busted out all the machines freaked out since he was technically still connected or whatever, and the effects of the stone/dead spirits was unleashed which made several people go mad and go on killing sprees. I think Helen died as well that day and her soul or whatever was stuck down there until Chris shut it down and ‘freed them’. She literally says “free us” at the end. He said it felt like the town was calling to him as well, because he was still connected and after finally breaking the connection and shutting it down he was freed as well.

I like how Insym plays variety of horror games daily, rlly shows how much he tries to entertain us, he is still in my opinion very underrated, other streamers have an unregular 1 stream per month schedule but still get more attention, which is extremely unfair, I guess it just depends on luck in the end

I love the horror genre but when it comes to playing the games it has always beaten me. Insym has finally got me playing these games myself and having that awesome 'laughing adrenaline scare rush' feeling instead of cowering. It's his YT videos for the past half year that's done it. I was surprised when i saw the Glaslyn Ices and the Spar shop in Hearth, the village is modelled almost identically to a Welsh Village called Beddgelert which is in Snowdonia. I realised it when seeing those. I've spent many a summer sat eating ice cream there on my holidays!

At 1:29:34, when you are in a small village, that is your mother, whose name has been changed to an unknown female, and all you see right now are your childhood memories, and all memories are based on your childhood. As a child, you were given tests. Now as an adult, you came back to either father or mother's funeral. Your childhood memories and the past came back to your mind, which is why everything you see is your childhood memories.

Okay, I admire this man's dedication to the horror genre of gaming but how does he not get bored? It baffles me!

Highly recommend you play Sylvio! Its a story based game where you explore an abandoned park/town, use a ghost recorder to find out the story of how people died, etc. the ghost recorder aspect is what I think youd enjoy the most! Check it out if you can! 👀

7:35 I just have to comment here that this whole scene gave me mad Silent Hill vibes, like the first 2 specifically. The graphics are reminiscent of the first one, to an extent, and there was even a diner scene in the first Silent Hill. The music in the background of this scene also really feels like something from a Silent Hill 2 cutscene.

I think it was real. I think it was in a sort of cycle of repeating something while Chris was away. I think when he came back he shut things down and/or completed the loop. As you leave the town is no longer dead and empty. There are no mushrooms all over. Whatever Chris's father started was finished by him or shut down so the town was allowed to go on as normal. I think Chris had gone back to the past and fixed the cycle. That's why Helen was say "We can ALL leave" they were stuck in that cycle. That's why the town is suddenly normal as you exit. Of course it could just be all in Chris's head but like you said, what would be the fun in that?

It's important to note that out of all the comments sections, this is the only one I've seen that's actually engaging with the game and trying to constructively think of what the game means. Thanks for your interesting thoughts

My take on the game is that it was all real. Chris can see ghosts. His father has a space-spore(?) meteor that can somehow be used to cause radio waves to reach into the afterlife. They were attempting to build, effectively, a ghost radar, and from there construct a literal spirit box. One of humanity's great dreams, the ability to contact the departed. But either it was much more difficult than they were expecting, or the father was way too zeroed in on finding Aneira, and only Aneira. Even successful contact was likely a failure to him because it wasn't *her*. Eventually Helen Williams gets fed up with how Chris is being treated and frees him. This causes the project to suffer a major setback, and it gets bought out by another group as indicated in one of the notes. The new group seems both more interested in just making the tech work and not wasting time searching for one specific ghost, and also less interested in safety overall. Or perhaps they just don't understand the whole thing as well as Chris' father had. They overexpose the workers to the afterlife, and the ghosts, or whatever exists there gets tired of their meddling and converts several of them into their agents, and they sabotage the project and kill pretty much everyone involved. Chris returns and finds that his link to the whole thing never really ended, drawing him into the last days of the project. He actually sees Helen die, but she is wearing a hazmat suit and is only identified as "Doctor Williams" in the echo as he never knew her full name, but her ghost lingered to help him out one last time, and to give everyone a chance to move on. He was the last piece of the puzzle, and it was probably a matter of either the ghosts take him with them to close the link, or Helen helps him sever it and walk away from it for good. The significance of the lake is likely that it's the impact crater from the meteor.

I hate dream endings, so my head canon is that the spooky stuff was real. I didn't like it in Mists of Aiden either. Imagine that game had stopped after the "first" ending, instead of erasing the importance of 90% of the protagonist's struggles.

good game, but the graphics are a little off putting, I'm really tired of the PS2 trend, it can sometimes be pretty cool (like maybe for retro horror games, or games that use the style in a creative way), but most of the time it looks really wonky. the bunker door towards the beginning of the game is a perfect example. it just looks goofy.
