I used to be so pissed when I’m riding a bus and it idles at a stop for a couple minutes because the bus driver says “we’re ahead of schedule”. Doesn’t happen often because of NYC traffic, but when it does, it was annoying because I just want to get where I’m going. Usually the buses run often enough (especially during rush hour) that missing one doesn’t affect you that much (one bus every 15 minutes or so at the latest, the buses I take in the morning leave like once every 5 minutes or so), and now that they have GPS tracking in them and you can check an app to see how long until the next bus arrives, I’ve gotten less pissed at it.

As a Colombian, I know that buses never have schedules anywhere, scheduled buses are a myth. You just go to the stop (if it's one if the "good buses") and wait until one that works for you shows up. If it's one of the crappy buses you just walk out and grab it wherever you are standing
@oscarpb190
@oscarpb190 3 жыл бұрын
Colombian here (latino), some bad stuff here without getting political: Buses don't have schedules, you just go to the “station”, which is basically a big bench with a roof if it's fancy and be lucky the one you need arrives. Wifi is garbage because what they do is they give you a extremely bad rooter, and then you have to pay for another device so you get better WiFi. Buying stuff online is difficult because of scams, stuff like amazon and sites like that don't really exists, if you buy something from there you spend more money on the delivering than what the product was worth. Everything imported is hella expensive, for reference, a Switch Light here is the same price as a normal Switch in USA. Yeah, thank you for reading my Ted Talk.

The bus issue is the same here in Puerto Rico. We have established schedules, but the buses show up at basically whenever they can. I once spent 3 hours waiting for a bus after leaving school early and I just straight up walked home cause I was so done with that shit. Deliveries and importing stuff from outside the US is a nightmare since most places don’t deliver here; they have to deliver to the US, and THEN here from the US and that shit is expensive and fucking stupid. WiFi fucking blows here, too, and don’t even get me started on how fucked the electricity infrastructure is here. We used to have CONSTANT power outages since before Hurricane Maria. It’s a mess.

Many people in Australia are capable of getting speeds like that, but pay for less. Download speeds of either 20Mbps or 40Mbps is typical (marketed as 25 or 50), and upload speeds are a decent fraction of that. But this is a recent thing. When Joey was living here, the best internet most could get was ADSL2+, with an upload/download of 24/1. And some people couldn't even get that; they were stuck with ADSL, which was about a third the speed.

The bus not stopping in your bus stop that’s here Edmonton Canada, I’ve experienced that twice; the first one was when I was in high school, luckily my high school is a 20-30 minute walk, and snowed pretty heavily, so I wasn’t really looking forward to walking through all that snow, if not I would’ve been late; the second time is when I was going to work, but this time my work is really far away, that I actually needed that bus. So I just phoned my supervisor tell her, I’m going to be a little bit late, thankfully she was very understanding supervisor.

As a Polish, I really appreciate InPost solution for deliveries (Paczkomat, I can explain in case someone's curious). And with transport... train will be late, during rush hours bus schedule in a city is pure fiction, trams are a bit better unless there are traffic jams on narrow streets, wrongly parked cars or derailings. And don't go near stadiums on matchday. Or outside during a derby day. On a positive note, free state universities which are better than private if you were good enough on a school-leaving exam

Wow I've never had these problems. In the States, at least where I live, if a package is delivered and your not there, they just leave it at your door. I've never had a pick up window situation. Furthermore, I have prime and my packages arrive anywhere from the day I ordered it to sometime in the next 2 or 3 days.

1:30 Love how Connor talks about copper wire like it's some ancient shit from medieval times, meanwhile here in Germany it's still over 50% of our network infrastructure. I've been there for the better part of my life, and I would rather live of bread and water and sleep on the floor than goping back to the days of (not even stable) 3 Mbit/s download. No joke, when it comes to the network, Germany is a 3rd world country in a lot of areas.

Living in Ottawa, Canada. Pros: We have an Amazon distribution center in town, lots of government jobs, not much crime, clean city relatively, all services are available, you can live in the country and commute into town, our river is eventually connected to the ocean if you wanna own a boat. Cons: Our transportation system is a joke, nothing to do other than sit at home, it's either a frigid hellscape or it's the surface of the sun with 150% humidity, it takes hours to get to Montreal or Toronto other than that you're talking days by car or an entire day by plane to get anywhere in North America, if you want to go outside of NA then you're talking thousands of dollars, hours on a plane, and multiple connecting flights, the weather sucks ass so the there is little outdoor shopping, it's all depressing malls. Basically if you want a stable job and a decent house in the suburbs to raise a family, great place. If you're young and you want to have a social life and go out and do things, eat at restaurants, visit attractions, it's shit. It's also shit if you want to travel anywhere because you need to fly and need to connect through other cities, so you lose a full day flying there, and another back, and it costs a lot.

You have to experience the bad to appreciate the good! I miss traveling and not just that, we have a lot of state border closures in Australia (I live in NSW where Joey's family is I think) so I can't travel to other states. Sydney's transport is a bit better now... in most areas! We now have aps that track the train and buses so you know when the bus / train is coming. The people from the UK tell me it's a lot better than London and Melbourne. I used to complain about Sydney and had a lot of pet peeves. After a few years living in Japan, I now love Sydney. It made me appreciate a lot of things. We have good weather, good food, beautiful scenery, beaches, lots of space, low covid rates and a good quality of life. Right now, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world. I loved Japan when I lived there but sometimes there were so many things I missed when I was there. There are talks that Aust is trying to reach a travel bubble agreement with other countries to allow travel to like countries with low covid rates. Japan is one of them so I remain hopeful that if that's the case, I will be able to visit maybe next year. I don't know if people appreciate how tough it is working in Japan. The wages are not terribly high and they promote people based on age. If you work in a company as a "salaryman" you will be expected to work 12-14 hours a day and 7 days a week. If you're a woman, you have little chance of leading or progressing unless you land a job in a "foreign" company with leaders who "understand". In terms of job prospects, maternity leave, progression, sexual harassment, union laws Japan is archaic. I love it but I know that I'd never get anywhere in my career there. Women are expected to get married and make babies by 30 so if you're still in the workforce, you're an old maid etc. I have a lot of Japanese friends in Aust and some have no interest in returning to the restrictive life in Japan. Especially if they're female and enjoy the independence here. Work life is tough. Mind you, I do work 10-12 hours in an Aussie company when I'm busy but at least I get to take annual leave (not a possibility in Japan!). If you're a foreigner in Japan and even if you have a Japanese wife/spouse, you will always be on a foreign visa and casual contract when you work in a company. They don't make foreigners permanent employees. You will never be entitled to the same benefits as a Japanese citizen. A lot of union laws/rights we take for granted in the European Union, Australia and the UK will not apply in Japan unless you work for a progressive international company. Not everyone is gonna be a youtuber, influencer or have that job that allows the freedom to be creative etc. Believe me I would rather work in Australia with the "slow" internet (It's better these days!) and get my weekends off to enjoy life etc. A lot of european, UK and Australian culture is focused on work-life balance; this does not exist in Japan!

I agree that it is always good and bad in every place but some places had more pros than cons. I'm from Lithuania, we had 16eu for 1gbit/s net. Bus at most 1-2minutes late you can get anywhere within a city and there is a bus like every 10minutes. I also lived in Wales, New port and internet sucked, public transport was almost non-existent as far as i knew. But the biggest reason I prefer living in Lithuania over some of the other countries is that i grew up here, i feel at home here, this is where all of my friends and family are while when i was in Wales i felt out of place...
