I know - this is an acoustic guitar channel but I’ve only played a Lowden guitar here a couple of times! Here’s a golden opportunity to rectify that state of affairs with a beautiful Lowden F38 model in Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar that I borrowed from my friends at The Guitar Showroom ‪@theguitarshowroom6243‬ It’s here if you would like to know more theguitarshowr...
I hope you enjoy the video
Until next time, stay tuned
Michael

I first fell in love with the Lowden sound in the late 80s, listening to Pierre Bensusan, casting ethereal spells of ridiculous beauty on his Lowden, aka The Old Lady. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert (and a player workshop!) a good number of times. Pierre actually played one of my very early self-made guitars, number six, I think; and he said to me, "This is a marvelous instrument!" I also had the great privilege of you playing a weird Middle-Earth-style guitar I made, called "Kilmer", at the B.I.G. guitar gathering in New Braunfels, TX, four (?) years ago. And we had a whole weekend of your presence there too. You were absolutely brilliant, and so generous with your time. These are some of the major high points of my existence. Raucous applause, as always, Michael!

The purflings and bindings on standard Lowdens might not be exotic but they are intricate; things like three- or four-ply rosettes and purflings. They seem to be more about showing off their wood craft rather than using the more traditional 'bling' of abalone and pearl (these materials have developed a reputation for adorning cheaper guitars so as to distract from the lower quality). They don't seem to be using pear wood anymore, as far as I can tell from their website.

As an owner of a Lowden F38, I'm so excited to see your post of this video. Among the rest of my luthier-made Brazilian rosewood guitars like Kim Walker OM, Ervin Somogyi Mod-D ("The Tree") & OM, Michael Greenfield G1, and Keystone SJ, my F38 reserves a special place, as it is the first high-end guitar in my life. Thanks for sharing this video!

That sounds awesome. What a nice guitar. The only guitar I ever owned that had the 'magic' was a Takemine acoustic cutaway years ago. Mother of pearl inlays everywhere. It had tonal harmonies on a single string! The most beautiful sounds I've heard from a guitar. Unfortunately it was stolen.

Lowden Guitars are great, wish I owned one. But I do have two guitars with Brazilian back and sides and both have the same enhanced articulation that this wood is known for. One is a Shanti Jumbo and that is the best sounding guitar that I own. It might be the best sounding guitar anybody in the world owns. The other is a Manuel Rodrigues Sr. classical and though it is clearly a superior instrument, it is not definitively better than my Indian rosewood Michael Thames which is better balanced across all the voices - it is just a different type of sound all together, one is a traditional guitar from Spain and the other a modern guitar made in the United States, two very different aesthetics. The makers were aiming for two different results during construction and they both attained what they were looking for. The bottom line is that Brazilian rosewood isn't the only factor for a great guitar but regardless of make and model it adds the same characteristics...more resonance, more volume, more detail and that adds up to a remarkable listening\playing experience overall.

Hi Michael, I love Cedar and Rosewood. My first better quality acoustic was a Takamine NP 15 exactly like Glen's 'Horse'. I bought it new from Rose Morris in Denmark St after playing just about every guitar in the shop that I could afford. It sounded the best. I think that was 1992, long before I knew about Glen. I then purchased a Taylor 714ce in 2001, again the best sounding guitar I could find in Taylor's range, at least to me. Then I was blessed with a Brazillian and Cedar Manzer. I have had the privilege of spending some hours in Toronto with Linda at her home, and finally Roger made me a Brazillian and Cedar Ken Nicol signature Fylde. Rosewood and Cedar has just been my go to. I feel very very privileged to own these guitars which will be passed down to our children and hopefully continue down the family tree. I mainly use them for fingerstyle but they all hold up well with a heavy pick too. They all do their own thing. As an aside, the Manzer in particular smells amazing every time it comes out of the Calton. Regards.

@@MichaelWatts I live in red cedar country ( So Oregon, USA) I have a sizeable quantity or Western Red cedar Billets. All harvested 20 years ago or more. Much of it downfall. All original old growth taken with permits from Oregon Dept of Forestry. These blocks were all quartersawn and defect free and gifted to me by luthier, and former Segovia student, Ray Reussner.. my friend and neighbor. ( there is a video of Ray on you tube as the subject of a Segovia master class in the sixties) He builds Hauser style guitars and uses primarily Red Cedar or Port Orford Cedar (a true cypress) I have quite a bit of that as well. Ray very much likes the sound of the Red Cedar but also aware of its tendency to split and in his opinion, and Segovia's, wears out over time. Often after many years in Ramirez guitars especially, you can see the red cedar fan braces rise into the top. Incidentally, Ray got many of Segovia's cast off Ramirez guitars.. and much like Segovia over time settled into Hausers. I have long wanted a Lowden.. maybe some day.

@MichaelWatts
@MichaelWatts 2 ай бұрын
Well that’s a challenge… and I made this video so that I wouldn’t have to! Ha ha! If pushed I’d say we have a detailed gentle treble response with a lot of resonance behind it, articulate bass and with a generally high overtone content. Upper partials are in tune with each other to a good extent - very little white noise.

A lowden you need to dig in when you play. Doesn't need a pick you need to play it more to get use to the respons. Specially when you are use to really responsive guitars. I think it's a good guitar for people that are use to play soft because it triggers the fingers to play with more versatile volume. I play a lot better sins I play my lowden also on other guitars because of it. My compliments about your playing👍👍👍
