to be fair, Matt himself said, at the end of the episode that Artagan asked for Jester's help, that her tricking Isharnai was pretty much the "ok, she's the one" moment that sets more or less kicks off the Rumblecusp arc.

​@@Pluto137 - BTW, it was fully planned this way at the time. So it's not just lucky that the story fits, it was intentional. In the end-of-campaign wrap up, Laura asked if that was Matt's plan the whole time. He said it was. "How did you know I'd buy the crimson weasel?" - Matt said he gave that about a 90% chance (after thinking for a sec, Laura realized that was accurate). But if not, Matt said Jester would have found it had stowed away with her. After the reveal in C2e136 but before that wrap-up confirmation, some youtube commenters pointed out that Matt had made a big deal out of describing the weasel, intentionally catching Laura's interest. Which would make sense now that we know Matt was intentionally setting that hook for Laura / Jester. I forget if we had confirmation that Matt's inspiration (and Artie's motivation) was Jester being sad Artie wasn't there with her, but given that Sprinkle was Artie the whole time, I think that's likely. So yes, fantastic storytelling with foreshadowing and everything to set up this big reveal that's fully consistent with everything.

For me it's a tie between that and the Vilya's identity reveal. Both excellent cases of Matt blindsiding them with an incredible plot twist

@@LocalMaple I love seeing Matt blue screen when Laura revealed the Dust of Deliciousness on the cupcake and cast Modify Memory. The dawning realization of the immensely big brain play Laura just pulled caught him completely by surprise.

It being matt, the long game

I seriously doubt the long game theory. If you have DM'ed just a few times you know how crazy shit will just pop up because players keep thinking something is X, might as well make it X :) On top of that his table also has all these crazy fans who have even crazier theories, so naturally he (and his players) have a lot to draw from when it comes to inspiration. Matt is a great planner, but an even greater DM. And a great DM doesn't take away autonomy from players by planning 100s of episodes ahead ^^

I think it was more planned than people think. I think he probably expected the reveal to be much sooner though. I'll explain. Episodes 29-32 went like this: Jester coped with the aftermath of being kidnapped and tortured and asked The Traveller why he abandoned her. Next episode Jester and Nott vandalized the church of the Platinum Dragon (classic chaos crew encounter) in an attempt to gain The Traveller's favor again because she assumes she must have done something wrong for him to allow such awful shit to happen. The very next episode, they coincidentally meet the ONLY traveling pet merchant in both campaigns. It was a Laura Bailey trap. Matt knows his players and he knows Laura can't pass up the opportunity to have an animal companion no matter how impractical it is. Even Travis was cursing at Matt about it. "You son of a bitch. You knew. You know what's gonna happen here. And when that pet dies or runs away, I'm gonna have to deal with the aftermath at home!" Then Travis said "You did this." to Matt after the purchase and Matt replied with a sinister look and "Yeah I did." It's funny too. The animal he showcased the most was the weasel. Not the damn blink dog, not the owl, or any of the others. The weasel. That could be a reach though. But what isn't a reach is the fact that Jester never had to roll an animal handling check for Sprinkle besides to teach him to fetch stuff or when he made her roll to see if Jester would know what to feed Sprinkle. She failed. Sprinkle still stayed. Meanwhile, they constantly had to roll for the blink dog and Professor Thaddeus. It was made really clear that having those pets for long was pretty much impossible. Yet Sprinkle never tried to escape despite constantly getting hit by aoe spells that would kill him thirty times over AND despite the fact Jester had no idea what to feed weasels until like episode 90ish. I initially thought it was because Matt wouldn't dare kill one of Laura's animals. Then I remembered Trinket constantly getting KOed in C1 and realized there might be something else going on here. I think Matt has had this idea in play since that day she asked Artagan "Where were you?"

Everything seems to suggest it was a retcon. But a very well executed one, anyway.

Sort of one of those things is only counted as a spoiler because the revelation occurs late in the campaign. It isn't a plot point or character development. It's a revelation. So you're quite safe :)

I remember Matt sending Liam a message on his phone when he was Capeleb. It must have been this information and Caleb just had to have an opportunity to bring it up.

Several times they've pointed out they only had enough of whatever ability they were using to protect themselves to cover the party itself, with Sprinkle receiving no protection at all. Vokodo's lair comes to mind, Sprinkle would have long since drowned *and* boiled to death in that encounter.

It isn't covered here but in the episode itself he glances over at Laura and laughing says "I think we've even joked about that at home"

He has commented a few times that he was super tempted to make the jokes that the others were saying about Sprinkle being dead this entire time canon but held back. I agree, he totally changed his mind part way through and made him Artagan.
