Just because I couldn't find this anywhere, here's Paul F. Tompkins' appearance in "There Will be Blood". I must admit that I didn't recognize him at all until I watched it again after knowing he was in the film, and I've got to say he was not funny at all in this role. Although I think he could square off against John C. Reilly in an acting off any day

The scene exemplifies one of the most profound lessons I learned in sales. That, while you want as many deals as you can get, just as much as the prospect is vetting you it is important to also vet the prospect and see if their business is even worth acquiring. In this case, the disorganization of the township makes their oil not worth the headaches that would come with dealing with them. Great movie

These people will be more difficult to swindle. Theyre rowdy. Plainview doesn't like to be challenged. Notice when Daniel offers to buy the Sunday ranch, Mr. Sunday is a pushover but Eli is not, and there is instant tension between them when Eli knows he's there for the oil but doesnt want to pay the price you would expect for land full of oil.

@@richhenry7540 These people are a bunch of rubes that simply do not know how to conduct business in a calm rational manner. Daniel stated his deal like any businessman would and the entire room erupted into a shouting match. Screw that! The first time I saw this scene I understood exactly what he meant when he said "I wouldn't take the lease now if you gave it to me as a gift." I do sales too. And if I don't like you I am not selling you anything. People like these rubes are never satisfied no matter what you do for them. The last thing I need is someone like that. There are too many other people out there that can do business in a civil way.

Oh, it’s a joke. Because the actor is a stand up comedian. He tells jokes so he’d make a joke about the scene. He joked that the scene was about a man trying to keep a meeting on track. But that’s not really the main focus of the scene. And that’s where the joke is. I get it.
