I had the pleasure of road testing and conducting a review of the Metzeler M9RR Sportec tyres on the BMW S1000RR recently. The intention was to understand their performance under sport riding conditions that many motorcycle riders engage in. During this review I also undertook some study on the features of the M9RR that differentiated it from other tyres and contributed to its incredible level of performance.
Metzeler has done an amazing job in their development of this tyre, which is clearly going to set a new benchmark in regards to having a high grip tyres that also experiences good mileage and low rolling resistance.
SOME NOTES ABOUT CONSTRUCTION OF THE M9RR TYRE
The front and rear M9s are both dual compound tyres and both use the same compounds for more predictable response. In the front, the central compound makes up around a third of the tread section with the other two thirds split equally on each side across the shoulders, and are slightly softer, to provide support and grip at lean.
At the rear, the compounds are arranged using a Cap and Base layout, where the harder base compound, present across the central quarter of the width of the tyre, is also used underneath the remaining 37.5% on each of the two shoulders, as a base layer which has a softer ‘cap’ over the top, as demonstrated above.
The compounds used are 100% silica which is said to improve warm-up time and abrasion resistance. The construction can be split into three categories; the slick shoulders for the sporty riders at full lean, the mid-lean grooves for water drainage and wear uniformity plus a central slick strip to carve through standing water and offer stability when the bike is upright.
The carcass construction is new with stiffer but less cords (the vertical ‘wall’ part under the exterior), which assist with the claims of extra grip, performance when worn and riding pleasure.
Matteo Torchiana, Head of Hypersport Development, says, “It’s an evolution, a step forward from M7 - a multiple test winner all over the world - and the big effort in the development of the M9 was to overtake the M7 in all the areas from street, racing and sport touring sides. The product is changing but also so is the market, so we wanted to offer a supersport product that are not only the superbikes but also for the naked, all displacement and the crossovers too for use in sporty as well as every day and in different conditions.”

I didn't know anything about the technical details you so kindly provided. I got a set about 2000 km ago just because I grew up with Metzelers and always had faith in them. Here where I am in South Africa, one has to order them in these days, unlike other brands. Boy am I glad I did. I can vouch that everything you said about grip is true. The confidence I get from them makes me want to ride all the time. Thanks for great information.

@@miltontavares9322 The Corsa 2s are the best tires for sporty street use in my opinion. the m9rr still has plenty of grip but it tends to slide a bit easier than de pirellis. but even if it slips it is very controllable. if you are often riding in temperatures around 15 degrees celius you probably should try out de m9rr because of its cold grip level. it still is very effective in temperatures around 25-30 degrees but depending on your riding style you will get it to slip a bit. if you are willing to give up some cold and wet grip for excellent feeling and grip even on the hottest days go for the pirellis. both are great tires but they are built with a different mindset of what they should be able to deal with.

Yes mate, I ran the new hyper sport Bridgestone a couple of weeks ago and did 7 track sessions on it. Loved the front, had a fair bit of problem with traction on the rear but once we found a workable pressure setting it was okay. They're a great tyre for sure, the front is really good and better than the rear which is a comment I've had from a lot of guys I know who race. I wouldn't go across to the S22s after using the M9s, I think the biggest difference will be how good the metzelers perform in wet and cold conditions. At the end of the day, it depends on what you are going to do with them mate, for street and range riding I am enjoying the M9s

Hey man, first of all thanks for the very exaustive review of this tyres. If this does not bother you, may I ask you an advice? I've got an Hornet 600 MY11. This bike came out of factory with a set of Bridgestone. I found myself pretty unsatisfied with this set of tyres, of which I don't recall the model. They had very poor grip, too much stiffness (in a bad way) and to me were also unsafe to ride. Then I went for a more sporty option, the Michelin Power Super Sport Evo. This tyres were another planet, but I felt like there was still room for improvement. So the next tyre change, I purchased a set of M7RR. Well the Metz were simply unreal. What I found more incredible was the solidity of the carcass (zero wobbles under heavy braking or while exiting corners), the ride comfort and how they behaved with dirty roads. One thing I didn't find like a 10/10 was the grip of the tyre compound in dry conditions. Especially the rear. Sometimes when leaning I felt it a bit slippery. Now it's time to change my bike's shoes again, so I was wondering if Metzeler with these M9 had address this "minor" issue. Do you feel more rear (or global) grip with these ones compared to the M7? I'm used to ran the tyres at the recommended pressures. I usually ride in summer only with good weather (but I always thought that a decent wet performing tyre isn't that bad considering you'll never know what you'll find behind the next corner...). Avg temps in my region during this season go from 15/20° celsius up to 35/40°. I like going fast but I don't ride like crazy. Only street use, no trackdays. Do you still think the best option will be the new M9? Thank you very much for your time and the great effort to put together this truly informative video and I wish you a nice day.
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 2 жыл бұрын
Yes mate, I do think this is the best option available right now. They are a brilliant tyre that perform very well in dry and exceptionally well in damp and cold conditions as well. But always remember, you still need to set tyre pressures properly for your riding circumstances, and you need to ride with good technique. Even a good tyre will slip when poor technique is applied by the rider. By the way, I am sticking with the M9RRs on both of my street bikes (S1000RR BMW and KTM SuperMotard), definitely best sport tyre I've ridden on.

Great review! Are you still running the M9 to this day? Has your opinion changed? I'm highly considering purchasing the M9 after watching yours and other reviews. I was considering the S22 and power 5, but riders seems to like the Metzler even though I never hear it about the brand that much. I bought a used k7 gixxer 600 and came with a shinko rear and an old michelin road 2 tires. I live in NorCal and because of climate and weather it might be ideal here.

Cheers mate, I can’t remember how many Ks i got, but one of my riding buddies got over 7000k if i remember correctly. These might be more sportier than the Michelin road series, i think probably more in the class of the Michelin power tyres if I have it right. Depends on what your goals are to be honest, if it’s more sportier riding or you’re looking for a tyre that is great in cold and/or wet conditions, hard to beat the M9RRs.

Hi, thanks for this great review. If not a problem, may I ask you a question? I plan to have a new set of tyres for my Fazer 800 to replace a set of Mitas Sportforce plus that leave me with a bad feeling of very low grip and an unpredictable behaviour every time (especially at the rear). I like to ride in a sporty way most of the times, but from times to times I use the bike also for a few relaxed daily trips. The M9 always needs a more aggressive riding style in order to go on temperature, or are they safe on every riding condition, even the ones more relaxed or in city conditions? Have you ever compared them with the Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV?
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 2 жыл бұрын
I've ridden on most of the brands and models of tyres on the road and on track including the Rosso's. My experience is that both the Rosso tyres and the M9s work well. However I particularly like the M9 for commuting and daily riding because Metzeler have a couple of advantages - they have a patented cap and base structure that is designed to help distribute heat across the tyre more effectively ... so what I have noticed is that heat is generated more quickly in the Metzeler sportec and racetec than other brands I have ridden on. Plus their wet and cold weather performance is the best of all of them because of the silica compound they use and the new tread pattern. If I was to choose between the two, I'd choose the M9s which is what I now use my my street ridden S1000RR. Hope that helps mate.

@@tonylito31 mate I am not that familiar with the Michelin, only used them once about 7 years ago. Some tyres behave like that and have a slow steering feel, I've felt that with some Dunlops for some reason. My first thought is to see what pressures you run, if a front tyre pressure of no less than 32 psi still feels slow to turn from one lean to the other side, then it is probably because the profile is not as round as it could be, i.e. worn on the sides and more pointed to the centre. That is not an uncommon situation on worn tyres. Let me know what you think.

You might not be aware that we run M9RRs on some of the California Superbike School coach bikes on track and those coaches are not slouches. The main difference with Racetecs (and other road race tyres) and these types of Sports tyres (M9RRs etc) is how much they can grip when you crank on the throttle at high lean angles and how hard you can trail brake into corners at lean. Unless you are riding super hard and racing, these M9RRs will do everything you need and they are especially good in the wet and on cold tarmac. I run M9RRs on my S1000RR Beemer for street riding and nobody gets away regardless of the tyre they use. On track ... like I said unless you are racing or riding super hard on the gas and brakes at lean angles, they'll suit most people. Combined with good riding technique and correct tyre pressures, I am a fan of using M9RRs on the street and promote these to everyone these days. Hope that helps, if you need more information, let me know mate.

@@I_am_Monty not a problem. These tyres are stiffer carcass than Pirelli but not as stiff a Dunlops. They are similar to Bridgestone. Carcass stiffness is a factor in setting pressures. So this is what I run on the road. For range spirited range riding in dry wether I set my tyres at 32psi cold front, 28psi cold rear ... and expect to see about a 2psi increase when they are heated. For wet weather riding I set b both front and rear at 34psi cold .. this helps prevent aqua planing by helping the tyres push through the water rather than flatten out and float on the surface, that's how we run wets on race bikes as well. On the track I would set that at 34psi hot front, 28psi hot rear. You'll get a zillion opinions about tyre pressures, the reality is they are always going be different for tyre brands, tyre types, how you ride, the environment etc. In any case I hope that helps mate.

thats a good question, I never actually thought about it. We have quite a few rough windy roads up here where I live and I have no complaints at all with the performance of these. Of course feel will be affected by tyre pressures, and me running more of a performance setting of 32 front 28 rear that's lower than factory recommended commuting pressures, means the tyres work better anyway.

I'm on my second set now for street riding and they are amazing. I have done a fair amount of trackdays but have been using stickier dot race tyres like the k2/k3. I'm considering doing a trackday on these tyres but I'm a little concerned about grip especially when push towards a pace I'm used to. Do you think I'll be fine running these at around 1.40 pace at smsp? Cheers

Gidday Nick, cheers mate and thanks for watching. Look, personally I would prefer to use Racetec RRs for track days. However, I can tell you we are running M9RRs on some of the coach bikes at the Superbike school and have no issues. The difference will be how much you can brake and accelerate at lean. They will give you plenty of grip to full lean angles, but you'll have to a bit gentler on the gas at lean (compared to Racetecs). I'd be okay running these doing 1:40s at SMSP.

Hey mate, hi from Australia. All of the modern sport tyres are great, there's no argument about how well they all perform and how far development has come. I have not done any testing on the latest Michelin Power. That said the reason I have been sticking to the M9RR is because it has shown a step change improvement in Wet weather and Cold weather performance, without compromising dry performance. In fact M9RR dry performance is better than the M7RR. For your info, M9RRs are fitted to the hire bikes of the Aussie California Superbike School, plus we run them on the rear of some of the coach bikes. Hope that helps.

Hello from UK! I’ve just run these on an s1000rr on two track days. First day - no warmers it was wet and dry. No issues. Second day in warmers, cool conditions. Had a lowside at the end of the first session. Metzler recommended only 2psi drop in pressure for the track. I ran 32 f 34 r. Very confused about crash. Any thoughts? What pressures do you run them in track abs with or without warmers? I wonder if I had too much drop in temp from warmers…
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 2 жыл бұрын
Gidday from Oz mate. Firstly it would be very difficult to say for sure the low side is because of tyres, my experience is that most low sides are caused by the rider - they don't lock on properly and hold pressure on the inside bar, or they add lean and throttle at the same time because of a slow entry speed etc .. there are a number of reasons how this can occur. In addition to that, there is never a generic answer to the pressure question because everyone rides differently and it affects tyre temperatures a lot. That said, I can tell you we run 32 psi front cold and 30 psi rear cold for on track S1000RR hire bikes. We run a lower pressure if we have the M9RR tyres fitted on the rear of Superbike school coach bikes because the coaches ride much harder and generate higher temperatures. However we prefer to run the Racetec RRs as they are more suited to track riding. I haven't solved your issue, I know that, and all due respect to you ... the first thing I'd be looking at is what you might have done to contribute to the low side. Cheers mate.

Reason is the rear will probably give better grip in certain conditions - i.e. wet roads, cool temperatures etc. I would never compromise by having a tyre with more grip on the rear than the front ... so I'd invest in that front one as well. One thing I didn't mention below was a main difference we've found on track with rear sport tyres (M7s) and race tyres (Racetec RRs) is the spin up that takes place at lean under hard throttle. Race tyres are obviously better at dealing with that. On the road I had no issues with the M9s, they do spin up but the movement of these is really controlled, they don't let go suddenly like a junky tyre. I have not tested on track yet, but for hard range riding you'll be happy with the M9 rear. If you have adjustable traction control I would set the sensitivity higher than I would for a race tyre. On the Beemer I settled on +3 in Slick DTC (if that makes sense).

What's the carcass like on this tire? Hard or soft?
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely not soft like a pirelli race tyre, nor as hard as some of the Dunlops I've ridden. I don't know for sure what the exact answer is but I'd actually say it's in between like medium. I can tell you the more I ride these and play with tyre pressures, the more I like them.

@@daintreetosea every time I talk about tyre pressures someone has a different opinion, that said I can tell you what I am running - for my spirited range riding on the S1000RR, 30psi cold front, 26psi cold rear for dry road ... for wet roads I run 34psi cold front and rear ... works for me and I don't normally poke along slowly. At the end of the day these will be good starting points for you.

Just for Road riding: is the m9 worth changing from the S21. My girl friend rides the bike too and she felt more confident with the bt-016pro With S21 she is not as confident So we were thinking of mounting the S22 or the M9RR. No track. Just road riding. Mostly dry weather although belgium is unpredicatable

Hey Steve, mate I am biased now towards the M9RR, I really am impressed with their performance on fast rides, wet rides, cold conditions ... you name it. I even did some track coaching on these things on a super wet day and they performed well. I have done a full track day on the S21's and found we had to experiment a lot to get the pressures right so they performed, particularly on the rear. They are great as well but I believe you will get much more out of the M9RRs mate. Give them a run.

How do they compare to a Michelin Power 5?
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't ridden on the Power 5s Devan. I checked with a few of my riding buddies and only found 1 person who had a set. He did say he preferred the Bridgestone S22 over these. I checked the tyres out and they don't have the same technology in them as the M9s thats for sure, and that weird gold-balled pattern on the slick strip on the edge for wet isn't a positive for me as nobody I know can actually lean that far in the wet on a road tyre. Even so, I'm sure they will perform well as most sport tyres today are very good.

@Devsterman
@Devsterman 3 жыл бұрын
@@Striple I dont have a ton of miles on them. I have maybe 2 or 3 canyon rides with them. I really like them though! When they were brand new, they had a really steep angle to them, so it was really weird getting used to the bike dropping so quickly when turning. They flattened out a little bit after riding on them. They are really comfortable as far as lean angle. I was doing my more spirited riding, and I barely even leaned past the end of the tread (sipe blocks or whatever they are called). That gives me a lot of confidence that there is way more performance available from them. I'm no expert, but I like them.

Are they better than S22?
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 2 жыл бұрын
that would be the wrong comparison, the S22 is the hyper sport tyre so it would be better to compare it to the Metzeler Racetecs which is the equivalent. The M9RR won't give you the same level of track performance at lean and high angles as the Racetecs or the S22. It is more of a sport riding tyre that gives great performance on sports bikes in the dry and is exceptional in wet and cold conditions. We have M9RRs fitted to the hire S1000RR BMWs at the Superbike school here in Australia and they perform very well. We also run an M9RR on the rear of some of the coach bikes to help with tyre life and only really need to go up to a Racetec on the rear to coach fast riders on race bikes with slicks. We do stick with the Racetecs on the front though on coach bikes. Finally, I have done track days on the S22 and did like them once I found the right tyre pressures to run. I do prefer the Racetecs over the S22 though for edge grip on the rear and the fact they seem to warm up much faster which is a big thing for street riding and track riding without tyre warmers. Hope that helps mate.

@@John.santos I've been running 32PSI cold front and 28PSI cold rear for range riding on my S1000RR. That is pretty close to what the Metzeler folk recommend and I have no issues at all with the ride, I bump it up to 34psi front and rear cold if the road is wet. That should give you a good starting point for range riding mate.
