How does a trash compactor work? This is what a day in the compactor at the landfill looks like. We use CAT 826C models here at Williams Landfill in South Carolina. They are very dependable machines, but will beat you up a little! Our landfill is a Construction & Demolition disposal facility. We don't take any household material here. Thanks for watching! #landfill #CAT #heavyequipment

I have worked with waste disposal for a couple of years now and here in Norway we recycle wood, cardboard and metal. This is often sorted out at the customers' premises and picked up by suitable vehicles that only collect that fraction of waste and timber at facilities for recycling This is how we try to avoid these large landfills that pollute for many years to come. The items that are recycled become new materials that in turn save the environment

@@TheRealMrDiggmost places do. My family has offered recycling for going on 4 generations. So this clown tells you they send out several trucks to pick up multiple streams of material. We send one truck . The trucks go to facilities and get sorted in one place. Much more efficient. Why you are doing so much pushing with a COMPACTOR is beyond me. The dozer spreads the compactor pacts

I think seeing the inner workings of a landfill is fascinating. I grew up in the '60's. We burned everything. The ash was pulled by conveyor from an underground pit and loaded into dump trucks where it was dumped throughout the area. The incinerator belched black soot that landed on clothes on the backyard clotheslines depending on wind direction. Frequently there were dump fires that taxed the local Fire Dept. They passed my house which was midway between the two and around the corner from the Highway on ramp that led one exit up to the dump. In the 2000's I was mid Career for Tilcon CT. They built a Leachate containment system around the dump, converted to a landfill. As a kid I played in dumps. In the early '80's I had to bring my trash to the local dump, drive my car to wherever the loader operator told me to dump it and go home, usually getting a flat tire in the process and having to plug it. Then in the '90's recycling started and that was a great thing collecting glass, cand and newspaper in different bins. Now, in CT it's single stream but not here in NY. Everything goes into dumpsters, then a single truck and off to barges to be added to landfills elsewhere from Transfer Stations. Tipping fees for items not allowed in the regular trash are exorbitant. I've yet to recycle anything at the local transfer Station. I don't have any electronics that need to go there and when I do I'll bring them. For the most part I strip the components and trash the housings. We do have a separate dumpster for cardboard which I use but as I said, everything goes into the same truck on pickup day.

Thanks for sharing this, it’s very interesting. We as humans are so wasteful and it just gets worse and worse it seems. Eventually there will be a lot less land and we’ll have to recycle more and be more resourceful!

Soooooo working at Fresh Kills Landfill for 28 years. I have many thousands of hours on Compactors. A typical garbage operation (1 shift of 3) would consist of 4 Compactors pushing 6 barges of garbage (6 Payhaulers, holding 150 tons of garbage, making 6 trips each per barge) per shift per location. (Plant #1 and Plant #2) Plus 2 truckfills with 2 Compactors each. May I offer some friendly advice. "Experts" say (yes, we had experts do 'compaction and time studies), you need to make at least 4 passes with the Compactor to achieve maximum compaction. The best way to achieve this is to push a partial blade. Then, back up over your same wheel marks. Then, move over another wheel width and repeat. As you continue to move over. You will naturally make the desired 4 passes. You will notice that the garbage is nice and flat. We always set our Compactors to automatically run 1st gear forward, 2nd gear back. But, you do you. You don't look too busy. Enjoy.

My dad use to manage operations at a landfill in Florida and he told me about all the odd stuff he saw. It was an indoor facility that used a series of conveyor belts that started at one and was manually sorted by hand and separated until it was 10-15 belts separated by material or waste type. There was about 30 workers and one day my dad said a couch came through and was tossed down to the bulk belt and that's when a bunch of cash came out to it. It was over $100k and they all split it and my dad didn't take ay cause he truly thought those workers deserved it. But he said every time after that the crew made sure to cut open every couch lol

Do you have a height limit for the rubbish? What do you cover it with and how deep? I to work in a landfill in Australia. Our biggest problem is contaminated water leaching out of the confines of the site. We use Komatsu loaders and Cat 963C Traxcavators for pushing and crushing and use a mix of sand and clay for cover. We use Moxy trucks to move our cover material around.

I don't get it. I mean it's much more expensive to prep land and do the whole filling process and then cover it and never use it again, than just burn most of the stuff and regain the energy. Most stuff looks like wood or wood based products. In Germany we just burn most of the trash, while having sophisticated filter systems to clean the smoke to be nearly completely harmless. With this energy we run steam turbines to generate electricity and with the waste steam we heat buildings.

@@TheRealMrDigg have you seen penn and teller recycling is bullshit? I went on a field trip with my daughter to the local dump and we saw the recycling trucks dump into the same area as all the other trucks. zero sorting. maybe it was temporary. but the reality is im too lazy to sort my trash
