Two points: 1) They never explicitly say Buntaro was Hiromatsu's son, but if you pay attention to Fuji's relation to both men, she called Buntaro "Uncle," and Hiromatsu "Grandfather." 2) If you pay closer attention to Gin's downplayed words with Toranaga towards the end of her time with him, she hints that she suspects Toranaga already expected Saeki's betrayal and already has a larger scheme in play. It would explain why she would ask a boon of him when he's seemingly on the backleg right now.

I mean, this entire show the sentiment of "Don't trust anyone, only you" as been spoken many times. Rodrigues with his heart speech, and especially Toranaga. And suddenly he trusts his brother bringing armed men?

Just for your information, the guild that Madam Gin was referring to is what ultimately became the Geisha District of Japan. Remember at this period, Geisha was not a thing yet. Now, I don't know for sure if this was how the Geisha District was form in real history, but they clearly are setting the stage for it in this fictional historical drama.

Shimbashi was/is supposed to be one of the major geisha districts in Tokyo -- formerly Edo. It's kinda hard to find where they're at now (they're still there apparently) but what you can easily find there are a *_lot_* of izakaya shops along and under the train tracks. I've never seen a geisha or a maiko in those few times I've been to Shimbashi, but they're more commonly seen in Gion, the famous geisha district in Kyoto.

@@jackson857I think that's the point. He's chasing legacy and ghosts. His father's kills were epic, like the surrendering general. The general is the quintessential "honorable" man and recognizes Toranaga, that's legend status already for his age (at least as the story goes.) I mean it's not like Toranaga has seemingly been available to him. All he's got is his ghost stories and legends and the one piece of fatherly advice he received "Don't trust anyone." His kills before were because of dad or dad's doing. This move, if he could make it, would be his. Kid was trying to make his legacy. Make that move to be boy warlord, save his dad, truly make a kill that mattered. That kill that was on the same level as his father. His first "real" kill.

exactly. The final scene was shocking. There is a saying about Toranaga's son that viewers say, ``The stupider the son, the cuter he is,'' and I think the viewers felt the same way about Nagakado. Even though he was a stupid son, I couldn't hate him. Viewers were shocked by his death. And he died a tragic death.He was a foolish but loving son. He was a son who loved his father. At the end, there was only the sound of water. The production, lighting, and visuals are truly amazing. The mark on the front of the helmet was sometimes a family crest, but each military commander had fun adding a design that he liked, emphasizing his strength, and so on. The military commanders were fashionable. A famous military commander had the word ``love'' displayed on the front of his helmet. The hospitality fish is sea bream. Salt-grilled sea bream with the head still attached is often served at celebrations and for the most entertaining occasions. Thank you for your always fun reactions. enjoying. Episode 8 is ``I want to watch it today.''

i don’t know what will happen with the Gin storyline but the scene of her negotiating for a special quarter for courtesans is historically very important. in reality, her quarters came to be and the art and culture cultivated there became an integral part of Japan. the Torunaga character is based on the shogun that allowed this to happen

The crazy thing about that ending is that while I think that kid was completely out of his depth for doing the things that he’s done and tried to do with this ending I still simultaneously felt so bad for him when he did die the way he did there. I think that’s just such a sad way to go out no matter how I felt about what he did. At the end of day, he was just a kid.

It just shows how different environment shapes his dad and him, Toronaga was raised in a harsher era where he have to be cautious at every moment while his son despite isn’t a spoiled brat, is a naive kid who doesn’t see the bigger picture from every action he makes cuz he doesn’t see the world as grey as the way his dad does

He felt his father was deeply threatened but didn't realize everything he tried to do made it worse. Now I wonder what that means for the next episode.

I think Yoshiwara was what Lady Gin asked for. Yoshiwara (吉原) was a famous yūkaku (red-light district) in Edo, present-day Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1617, Yoshiwara was one of three licensed and well-known red-light districts created during the early 17th century by the Tokugawa shogunate, alongside Shimabara in Kyoto in 1640 and Shinmachi in Osaka.

Him storming off from the meeting does seem like something that could be planned as the others would expect that kind of thing from him… but what can he do? No idea what torunga is planning but he’s going to be wishing he told his son the plan I think

And during the first meeting/dinner scene (before his brother turns on him) Toranaga tells John only to wear his swords and specifically asks for him not to wear his pistols. But, in the second scene when he "surrenders" John not only has his swords, but his pistols as well. Really seems like a "be respectful so he joins us" then switches to "It's go time"

There is a theory that when Tokugawa (Toranaga) was young, he defecated in fear after losing to Takeda, and another theory that he created a painting depicting him defecating as a metaphor for the shameful warning of his crushing defeat.

During the seppuku, it is to show mercy because dying from cutting a cross, your dying is slow process and very painful. A cross means , at first stub deep and you cut across horizontal and then go upwards. There is a manner of seppuku. Cutting of neck with one strike is very skillful samurai can do and release pain from him. If you are not good at , even you can not release it from body , even give him unnecessary pain to the person.

Not exactly , what you're supposed to do is to cut the head off but not completely , you need it to stay on the body so the soul can be release from head If a head is chopped off completely , the soul is trapped in the head , thus making it very dishonourable

The soul is kept in the butt/ the stomach. The soul is to be released by cutting opening the stomach. Older versions was a cross to make a big hole. Eventually it was simplified to a simple slice across the stomach due to how long and dirty it was. The head is kept in a clean and beautiful state so it can be gifted to a lord or the family. A single slash for mercy and cleanliness. Often, the warrior would wear a bit of make up so his head will not look bad due to rot.

Remember, Toronaga has been playing 4D chess while everyone else has been playing checkers, I have no doubt he had a plan from the beginning and expected the betrayal of his brother, and it's easier to attack Osaka Castle from the inside than to lay siege to it

I tend to agree, however I think it's stupid of him not to tell his allies his plan. That's how you get things like that last scene.

@@jackson857 It's a massive risk, that's for sure. But keep in mind that Toranaga's enemies -- especially his half-brother -- already know how ridiculously wily he is. They'd keep a closer eye on his court instead of him, looking for any hint that something's up. My guess is that the only ones he _did_ confide in at such a dangerously critical moment would be Hiromatsu (the most discreet member of his court) and Blackthorne (the one most unfamiliar to his opponents). John's public outburst, berating the court - and Toranaga himself - *is* a very convincing show of how "defeated" they clearly are. The most obvious cost to this sort of trickery is that the eager ones would most likely do something foolish, which is the same reason why you really can't trust those -- even if they're your closest friends or kin -- with your most vital plans.

Toranaga is a master tactician, it’s his plan all along to be escorted back to Osaka and initiate the attack from within. Easier to storm once inside, and I believe his half-brother is part of the plan. They kept it secret to minimize getting compromised. I can’t wait to watch the next episode.

I’ve just watched GIRI HAJI (BBC, now on Netflix), which Anna Sawai (Mariko) and Takehiro Hira (Ishido) are both in. They were in this before also being in MONARCH and SHOGUN. It's random and alternative, but has a lot of held-back feelings, as you'd expect from Japanese characters.

@@MiaH56 Anna is def in it. I think from episode three, onwards. I didn't know he was from an acting line, that's cool. When it was on the BBC I watched the first episode but never carried it on. Since seeing Monarch and Shogun, my curiosity lead me to go back and give it another go. It isn't even on BBCiplayer anymore, but luckily Netflix paid the rights to have it on their service.

If Toranaga is playing 4D chess, then I’m thinking when he was away, he had set this up with his brother, accounting for the possibility they’d offer him a position on the council. This could be his way of getting things started from within. They both had to play this out as if real, and of course, his son is rash and makes a huge mistake. Dying instead of being patient.

it's easier to infiltrate Osaka than besiege it, but it's even EASIER if you were to have a warship raining down fire on it from the sea, effectively drawing the defenders out.... you know, as John has been suggesting for six months now?

I thought they would denote rank or division as well, but they're more like personal unique crests, you wear them to signal yourself to your men. since Japan is so hierarchical, everyone works out *themselves* based on *where the lord is,* and you tell lord from underling by reading their crests. it's a very simple rule that allows for very complex interactions.

Yea in East Asian cultures incense sticks were a standard length and burnt for a set amount of time. There is an ancient saying in my culture, may I have your stick of incense time, which literally just means you are asking for someone to spare you sometime. It like the moment how things can all changed in the moment.

Watched this more than twice, in order to get a more objective perspective. After Gin had that conversation with Toranaga, asking for land in Edo to create the future yukaku district, his son managed to infiltrate the willow world… coincidence? Was his son meant to be the one to infiltrate?

now that my head is cooled down, knowing my history, and taking into account that we still have three full episodes left, I can lay out a scenario on how Sekigahara can still be played out on screen with the setup we have so far. 1. Ohno, the Christian lord, will largely be idle and not join the battle; maybe even turn against Ishido mid fight, coaxed along by the Portuguese missionaries who in turn had promises from Toranaga for a church in Edo. 2. Saeki would be indecisive and in the flank. Some time into the battle, Ishido will order him to attack, but he will not. Toranaga will command Blackthorne to fire cannons on him and that will force him to act. That way, saeki will turn and attack the lepper lord, and ishido’s flank will collapse. And probably 3. The Noh actor samurai lord will be convinced to defect to the Toranaga side by Ochiba-sama; who I think would agree to marry Ishido on episode 8 after he defeats Toranaga, playing to his Ego to go to the open field instead of turtle up in Osaka Castle.

That end literally silenced me. Most suprising deaths i just roll my eyes or say ok but this one hit different, the way he died i think shocked me most. Tryed to kill his uncle without honour but he himself died without honour

Subtle foreshadowing was right after Toranaga rejected Mariko's plea to let her die. When he stepped outside and the raindrop hit him, he reacted like he was startled. I think the idea is he got a sudden foreboding dread that he did not know what it meant. And then Junior slipped on a wet rock.....

I find it interesting that Toronaga's son is either so blinded by his own ambition and/or ignorant of his father's expert level of cunning/planning that he would try to pull off killing his uncle. Everyone around Toronaga comments on his skill with planning & his wily nature; why doesn't his son trust in that?

this show is actually very close to real japanese history, but they changed names of characters to give them some more freedom, one thing you should definitely know though is that the town of Edo they keep talking about was a real city in Japan, and it is now know as Tokyo... as they keep referencing it more and more, I think it is important to point that out.

My guess: 1. Stick Of Time... the stick was already burnt down when the madam arrived. Indicating that he had just spoken with someone else. ("Who knows how many sticks of time we have left") 2. He refused a very reasonable offer from the madam (which between the lines was to help kill the brother in the tea house in exchange for setting up the guild) 3. Shogun refused because he has a plan in-action, im guessing with the brither because John storming out plays with his constant requests for more agency in the last few eps. TLDR I think the brother is in on it and the sons death will be an even bigger tragedy and something the Shigun feels guilt over, thus bringing John closer into the inner-circle once they roll up on Osaka and bitch slap a few beurocrats. The show is so good, unlike others, that ill be happy to be wrong because the storytelling has been so good so far.

Each episode is getting intense with some crazy twists and turns. I think this show is going to win lots of awards in the coming months from best actor, supporting actor, best actress, best supporting actress, best costume design, production design and many more. Bruce Lee would've been really proud of this show.

Because they look similar, people think they are the same as Chinese and Koreans. Japanese people don't have a culture of two-legged sheep like Chinese people, and they don't lie or imitate people as much as Koreans do. The resemblance is only in appearance. They are ethnic groups with completely different cultures. I would like you to understand the difference if possible.

Lad's Toranaga did'nt say how long he'll take to arrive in Ishido? It could take him weeks. Toranaga knows his brother has left his own lands only lightly protected and open to bandit attacks. In episode 1 did Toronaga have a quiet meeting with Fuji's husband so his son did'nt do anything silly at his meeting with the regents? Cheers, Chris Perry.
