My boyfriend’s dad just died of mesothelioma (automotive industry) but they’re being all sheisty with it (you can’t prove it was “our” asbestos that killed him, etc.) so they didn’t get any financial compensation 😢 I grew up having memorized the mesothelioma commercial and I feel so betrayed. Stupid ass GM can fuck themselves. He suffered.

My family’s Yacht business used asbestos so, strangely enough, my parents & 10 siblings all died this morning of that pesky mesothelioma but it was worth it just to be lifted out of my mild sadness by this flawless musical masterpiece! My grandpa was diagnosed with mesothelioma before I was born. Right after his diagnosis, my parents decided to have a kid since they realized life is short and they wanted to have a kid before he died. 9 and a half months after his diagnosis, I was born. Unfortunately, they tried to sue the company he worked at where he was exposed, but the company was defunct so there was no money to get. Too bad, because I could sue them for my grandfather's death AND my existence!

@The Lord of Nothing Yes. He unloaded bales of asbestos from train cars during the summers to pay for college. Come to think of it, there were a lot of weird and usually train-related deaths on that side of the family.

It must be a personal hell hearing mundane stuff like commercials and being like "that sounds like it could fit this song." Like, there's a thunderstorm outside, it's 2 in the morning, you're trying to sleep, but you're haunted by the sound of the narrator of the mesothelioma commercial in cadence with the Can Can. Wrenched from a cold sweat you go to pro tools to make it exist in reality to silence the demons so you can rest. That's how I imagine all of these projects come out. Like it's never something you _want_ to do it's something you _have_ to do.

These mesothelioma commercials aired in like the 90s or early 2000s, and by that point, everyone already knew both cigarettes and asbestos caused cancer. Buildings were meant to be retrofitted to get rid of asbestos starting in the 80s, but in the 1990s, buildings still contained it. So the difference between cigarettes and these ads is that people in the construction industry were unknowingly or unwittingly being exposed to it, whereas cigarette smokers were aware of the exposure and risk but chose to do it anyway.
