Grass clumping under a lawnmower when it's wet is a common issue that many lawn care enthusiasts encounter. This problem occurs primarily due to the moisture content of the grass and the conditions during mowing. Here's why it happens and how to reduce it:
Wet grass has a higher moisture content than dry grass, which makes it stickier and easier to clump. Wet grass can clump together as the lawnmower blades cut through it and collect underneath the mower deck.
Size of the Grass Clippings: The size of the grass clippings is also important. The grass clippings are typically longer and heavier when the grass is wet, which increases the likelihood that they may clump together.
Mower blade dullness: Grass is torn rather than smoothly mowed by dull mower blades. When circumstances are damp, this tearing motion might exacerbate clumping.
Follow these recommendations to minimise grass clumping when cutting damp grass:
while feasible, mow the lawn while the grass is completely dry. It is more difficult to make a neat cut with wet grass since it tends to cluster more.
Sharpen Blades: Make sure the lawnmower blades are cutting-edge. The chance of clumping is increased when the grass is torn by dull blades. Replace the blades when necessary or regularly sharpen them.
Raising the mower deck to a higher cutting height will change the mowing height. This improves airflow underneath the mower deck and lessens the possibility of grass clumps forming.
Increased Mowing: If your grass grows quickly, you might want to increase your mowing frequency, particularly in the rainy season. Cutting shorter sections of grass at once can aid in clump prevention.
Consider using a mulching mower, which has special blades that chop grass into smaller pieces and scatter them evenly throughout the lawn.
Reduce Your Speed When Mowing Wet Grass: When cutting wet grass, slow down. As a result, the mower has more time to process and distribute the clippings evenly.
Dry the Grass: Don't mow the grass until it has completely dried out if it is damp from morning dew or a little rain. As an alternative, you can aid in drying the grass before cutting it with a rake or leaf blower.
Clean the Underside of the Deck: To get rid of any stored grass clippings and dirt, periodically clean the underside of your lawnmower deck. This prevents clumping and maintains optimum airflow.
By adhering to these recommendations, you can cut your lawn more neatly and evenly even when the conditions are less than perfect and reduce grass clumping when mowing wet grass.
In no particular order:
No.1 - Blade Type (Wrong Blade)
No.2 - Blade Blunt/Damaged
No.3 - Wet Grass
No.4 - Grass too long
No.5 - Mowing too fast
No.6 - Not using Full Throttle
No.7 - Clean under Deck
I explain these in more detail in the video. I hope they help.
Many thanks indeed

I just thought of another reason, the air that carries the grass clippings into the grassbox has to exit the grassbox through vents or through the fabric grass collector - if the fabric is clogged or the vents are clogged this will reduce the airflow. Great video, very helpful - cheers!

Oh my goodness I have cut grass for most of my 54 years and most of these are so obvious yet it's pathetic I didn't consider them thank you so much for this video not only for the subject but for the ways it was done I have not seen another one with the same subject and maybe because it is such an obvious thing but I would have never figured it out without running across this so thank you very much for this as I stand here shaking my head wondering how I became so stupid.

Very interesting Greg, this just opened up a complete new prospect on how the blades operate, especially the differences between mulching and suction blades. Thanks as always Greg, best small engine doc on you tube👍

Now I finally know why my newer Toro 3 in 1 doesn't do a good job of filling the bag...the blade! Thank you for this video.

Great video. I agree never mow wet grass if possible. I myself refuse to cut it wet. Can’t stand the mess on the deck.

Also make sure your bag is clean, inside and out otherwise there is no air flow.

HI thank you for sharing an important tip about lawn mower maintenance-ensuring that the bag is clean inside and out to maintain proper airflow. You bring up a crucial aspect of lawn mower care that can often be overlooked but significantly impacts performance. A clean bag promotes adequate airflow, which is essential for efficient grass collection and overall mower operation. When the bag becomes clogged with grass clippings or debris, it restricts airflow, causing the mower's engine to work harder and potentially affecting cutting performance. Regularly cleaning the bag helps maintain optimal airflow, allowing the mower to operate more effectively and efficiently. In addition to cleaning the bag, it's also essential to inspect and clean the mower's air filter regularly. A clean air filter ensures that the engine receives clean, unrestricted air, further optimizing performance and longevity. Thank you for sharing this valuable tip with our community. It's these simple maintenance practices that contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable lawn mowing experience. If you have any more tips or questions to share, feel free to reach out. We appreciate your engagement and helpful contributions! Best regards, Craig

What is wrong with not collecting the clippings and just allow them to stay on the lawn to fertilize the soil.
@TheRepairSpecialist
@TheRepairSpecialist Жыл бұрын
Well it all depends on preference really. Some people believe that not collecting the grass is a very good thing to do because it fertilises the soil when it drops, but others don’t like the grass left on the lawn and would rather have it looking tidy, that’s basically all.

People say never walk the mower backwards to cut grass ..but I find no difference if I’m in a tight spot ?

I know what you mean. I too sometimes walk backwards for very short distances if I need to 👍

@@TheRepairSpecialist Could be something related to safety, as few of us have eyes in the back of our heads.. I use riding mowers (a lawn tractor and a rider) and I reverse in tight spots with the deck engaged with no adverse effects as far as i can see, so it leads me to think that the advice is given with safety in mind.. so if you do walk backwards while mowing, just be extra observant/careful I would say
