Reliable rugged family 4x4 SUV? 2024 Isuzu MU-X review

The Isuzu MU-X is going to tick the boxes for plenty of buyers.
With a strong diesel engine, 4WD underpinnings with serious off-road capability, and the maximum 3.5-tonne towing capacity, it really does do a lot.
Add to that the fact that the MU-X sold in Australia comes with a standard seven seater layout, and you really do have the ideal family truck.... almost.
There are some things that could be better with this D-Max ute-based SUV, and I'll run through them in this review. Plus, I'll tell you which of the other ladder-chassis, body-on-frame off-road 4x4 wagons you should be considering if you're looking for a vehicle like this.

Have just test driven Pajero Sport, Rexton and Mu-x, wanting a vehicle for general use plus towing a 2400kg van. Thought my choice would be the Pajero but found it a bit light and skittish in the rear end on uneven surfaces and a little coarse on acceleration. Rexton was surprisingly impressive, competitively priced, huge number of features, lot of power from just 2.2litres. Discounted it because Ssang Yong have a bit of a chequered history with some financial instability; thought resale values could be in jeopardy. Decided on the Mu-x. It ticked all the boxes, very stable, plenty of power, nicely appointed, especially in the more popular up spec LS-T model. Great video, thanks.

Had my mu-X for nearly 3 months now and overall am very pleased. 4000 kms in a combination of around town, towing the van and highway trips. Great to drive, excellent fuel economy, especially comfortable plus handles rougher roads with minimum fuss. Downsides? A few of the electronic assists take some getting used to. I have disabled the autonomous braking function as it gets me into more trouble than it’s worth. Rear suspension is great under normal use but found when towing a van with 200 kg towball download that I’ve had to fit airbags to level the car and van up.

The Fortuner will be a weapon if you plan to spend more time off-road, than on-road. But the MU-X is a far more liveable vehicle for daily duties.
@lionelbrink
@lionelbrink 3 ай бұрын
Fortuner has an incredibly harsh on-road ride "feel" - but offroad this is confidence inspiring (still bloody harsh though). Mux is far more pleasent to drive both on & off road.

Really thinking about ordering a ls-m 4x4 shortly. Just under $61k on road with a tow kit. Then ill have to add the roof racks and platform. Drawer and duel battery system. Seat covers and floor matts. So will probably set me back $68k. Is a lot of money but its a lot of car as well. 3.0l engine is probably the best in its class.

I can clearly picture me going overlanding in one of these. Wider all terrain tyres, and a rooftop tent and maybe towing an off-road trailer. I'm lucky enough to do Botswana and Namibia, et al. I want to sleep on an M-UX rooftop while lions walk around my campsite

Has to be the poorest tech of any of the recent vehicles I drive for work, but this week i handed back a hire i had which was the 4x2 Mux and my God, so economical on fuel. It's still extremely basic vehicle compared to the equivalent Ford as my day to Ute is the DMax and tge Ranger Ute is amazing on tech and ride quality.

To be honest there is no wrong choice between these two I have 2015 Mux with 225k km and I had almost no issues at all And I know alot of people with the fortuner and it's great So the real questions are : Do you want diesel engine or not ? Which one is cheaper Which one is probably all of the engineers could work on (depends on your country and how popular the car is) And the price of diesel And which have better warranty Other than that I think both are wonderful choices

You can’t base your decision merely on price alone Each one of these vehicles offer something that Brand loyalist would want . Time is the key here Ford products are still suffering the same issues As they had sice the days of mini vans and mid sized trucks . Fires and faulty transmissions Toyota builds great vehicles, however it’s Not for everyone. Geared more for boony Bashing . MU-X can do it all . Three rows Covers the needs of the family . Fold flat Great for weekend projects, comfortable Families have gone camping - hundreds I’m km . When you’ve had the same UTE. For 15 years or more . You know then You’ve made a wise informed. First Class interior .

It’s conservative but that’s appealing to a lot of people - they might advertise this thing appealing to young couples, but it’s often empty-nesters with a caravan that buy them, and conservative design is what that demographic is drawn to.

pass, there are better in this class segment for less $$$, namely Pajero Sport and Rexton or if you want to spend more and getter off road the Fortuner and then there is the best the Everest but be prepared to pay but once you are at that price range the Landcruiser Prado is better then the Nissan Patrol or Landcruiser 3000 series.
