Yeat, the artist behind hits such as Monëy so big, Out thë way, Flawlëss (feat. Lil Uzi Vert) and IDGAF (with Drake), has become a global superstar in recent years.
There are many factors that have contributed to the Twizzy Rich rapper’s success, namely his unique style, standout beats from producers such as BNYX, music videos on Cole Bennett’s Lyrical Lemonade channel (‘Still Countin’, bigger thën everything and more) and, who can forget, his song for Minions: The Rise of Gru (Rich Minion).
But, by far one of the biggest elements that has led to Yeat’s rise in popularity, and made him stand apart from contemporaries such as Playboi Carti in the process, is his vocabulary.
Yeat (a.k.a. Noah Smith) has seemingly made up his own language, something I’m coining ‘Yeat-ese’. This language involves the use of made-up phrases such as Twizzy, Tonka, Luh Crank, Shmunky and more.
Yeat’s biggest fans have been quick to adopt this lexicon and use it both in online communities and, seemingly, in their day-to-day lives - jokingly or otherwise. It seems as if the existence of this ‘Yeat-ese’ language has strengthened the bond between Yeat and his fanbase, and led to the cultivation of a highly devoted following.
However, Yeat’s utilisation of this way of speaking has led to the Sorry Bout That rapper becoming difficult to understand to newcomers of his music; and created somewhat of a language barrier. So, in this video, I’m planning to solve that problem and make a Yeat Translator that translates his lyrics into English. Because Google Translate haven’t done it yet.
Despite some initial issues, and no help from Google, I got there in the end and managed to get ‘Twizzy Translate’ live and working. Now you can convert lyrics from your favourite Yeat song, whether that’s Turban, Talk, Get Busy, Dub or Poppin, into something legible.
You could even go so far as to translate lyrics from Yeats albums such as Up 2 Më, 2 Alivë, Lyfë, AftërLyfe or even his highly anticipated upcoming album LyfëStyle (when it releases, of course).
Don’t worry, this video isn’t just about my quest to solve Yeat’s language problem, it’s also an oppurtunity for humour, whether through my conversation with Google, linguistics expert Dominic Watt or the trials and tribulations of Reddit’s comment section.
