Looking to grow your first vegetable garden? Or maybe you’ve given it a try in the past and didn’t enjoy the success you thought you would? Well, I designed a self-paced online gardening course just for you! 12 core chapters of a video-based program that will take you from complete beginner to garden master without having to sift through hours and hours of KZfaq content. Videos that barely contain the relevant information you need to get started focusing on garden tours and channel updates rather than useful insight. With Vegetable Gardening Basics, we’ve changed all that and synthesized all the information I’ve learned over my 30 plus years of growing food down to all the key pieces of the puzzle to unlock your growing potential. Every basic skill, technique, tip, trick, you name it, its all here. A 150+ page high resolution PDF guidebook is also included to help reinforce and guide you along the way, making the learning and absorbing of the material even easier. Lifetime access is included, including any updates or extra content. The first batch of enrollment is now live, secure your spot today! courses.theripetomatofarms.ca/courses/vegetable-gardening-basics

I am a first year gardener this year...I've been teaching myself gardening, canning, freeze-drying, dehydrating...basically, overall self-reliance this past 5 years. I follow a lot of canning/gardening/homestead channels and I enjoy them all...but for real, when it comes to teaching...you are second to none! Thank you so much for sharing your skills with us. Your approach to teaching, breaking down the how's and why's is just wonderful. I never leave your videos with questions because you thoroughly cover everything. And for those of us without a lot of extra time to spend in front of a screen, you are as straight to the point as possible. Seriously, second to none. ~Kelly

That's so amazing of you to say, thank you! I love that you recognize the "straight to the point" approach because its something I'm really striving for Kelly. I get the entertainment value of a lot of other channels, and more power to them. I just want to pass on what knowledge I've accrued without all that other stuff. I won't get as many views because of it, but if I can create a library full of everything I've learned and will learn, that means a lot more in my opinion. Cheers! 🙂

Im actually going to attempt to grow strawberries in my closet in my big octopot self watering system under a strong full specrum grow light. I cant find anyone who has attempted strawberries this way even those who suggest not to grow inside haven’t even attempted it, so I’m gonna go for it being that it gets so much hotter each year then the last that all my outdoor plants tend to burn up before they can really do anything , and also because at this house and the house I lived in before I had started off the growing season, growing my own veggies, tomatoes , melons and such, only for them to get destroyed after all my work by insects like aphids or other crop my homework, killing insects. I figured the best way to avoid those pesty insects ruining all my hard work anymore is by growing my plants inside where they’re safe!

Do you have any deeper dives videos about day-nutral and ever-bearing? given my two grow environment I would like to be able to juste eat strawberries all the time when spending time in the gardens 😍 Can you give me any pointers? I totally agree! We have not had rain here in Florida, since December 2022, and 3 days ago, the skies opened up and we got 2.5 inches in 1 hour. Believe it or not, that much rain on sand, is not good. Dry sand is quite oily? Weird right? I think about 5-7 of my Strawbabies drowned. Maybe not, but they sure look dead to me. Anything I can do?

I grow alpine and musk strawberries from seed quite often. They are an exception to your hybrid rule. They also can bear fruit the first year of you start them mid January the plants will be healthy enough by spring to produce before. My hawaii white strawberries were actually producing fruit in the pots I started them in. I will however note, unless you just want to claim you grow strange strawberries, just buy your plants. It's far less painful.

I have been growing strawberries for about 15 years and lately I’ve been taking the berries that aren’t good to eat and I smoosh them on a paper towel, I let them dry. Once they are dry, I brush the seeds right into a pot that has dirt in it, I put a thin layer of dirt on top and give them some water. Be patient, the strawberry will start showing itself in about 7-14 days and wahlah, now you’ve become a strawberry farmer! Lol ….. good luck. 🍓 Oh ya, I did get strawberries the first year, but I would cut the first flower off, this helps the strawberries to become much larger and not be so small. 😊

Nice video. Beautiful looking strawbs. I'm strictly a container grower for everything due to a small backyard and woods behind the house. Too many animals that would (and some do) raid my bounty. Deer, raccoons, #!@$ groundhog, chipmunks, squirrels, possum, turkeys, fox, coyotes and fishers. I pack my planters with strawberry plants. I use everbearing plants, use composted manure every spring and lots of fert during the growing season. If the plants slow down they get replaced and a chance at a 2nd life in an open spot not too far into the woods.

I currently grow 4 our of all 5 wild strawberry species that exist in the PNW. and I have found that (while nothing compared to a tree or a tomato) strawberry roots can actually get quite long. (easily over 1 foot in length). also, beach strawberries I have noticed are quite stronger at living in wet conditions. a smaller but wider pot I have with three sitting in it currently have a large network of roots in the underpan that is filled with water 24/7 due to all the rain its been receiving. and despite its not being as adaptable to cold weather, it still has thrived compared to modern garden hybrids. (all of my wild ones have greater resistance to cold weather and have been pushing flowers despite the cold frosty nights and have sustained no/minimal damage compared to my larger hybrids!

Wow! This video on strawberry growing is so timely! Tried growing them from seeds but failed as the seedling wouldn’t grow past their first two leaves. Tried using grow light as well, but alas. Nevertheless, I didn’t deter me and bought 2 strawberries baskets with the loads of berries already growing in them. Most importantly, I live in the Windy City suburb of the USA. Therefore, had to come up with a few tricks to protect them from the high wind and cold 🥶 temps in last 4 weeks. So I used burlap roll to cover my flower plants as well as these beauties. Walmart sells these long rolls in its craft sections. I clipped them on to the wire mesh net I use for the cucumber vines. This time I put this mesh in front of these pots and layered it with the burlap. My strawberries did very well doing so and now started to ripen up. I did put them next to the patio railing and placed them inside the tulle nets and secured the 4 corners up on top. However, I will watch them closely after listening to your advise that they dnt do well in the high winds 💨 due to the wind stress. So, thanks for that as well as rest of the care aspects, including feeding types and schedule. Additionally, I am also planning to buy the “straws” for the “strawberries” 🪴😂 to cover their top soil up. Thank you for your in depth education on how to grow plants at home. I also have a request, could you do an episode on other berries plant care too? I have put blueberry and raspberry plants in the containers, could you please cover their care in one of your berries care episodes? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and practices with us. On the side note- the lettuces I grew using the plastic bottle method was a great success over growing them from seeds indoor. I found it less energy spending methods as wel😎👩‍🌾🤣. Also, The last years pots that got covered by the burlaps also grew many new seedlings 🌱 on their own. Some are the lettuces (seeds sprinkled from the last year’s lettuce bolts). This was an amazing 🤩 learning to get free plants from the last seasons. I look forward to your new episode! Thank you 🙏

Goats ate my last strawberry plants. Take two this year, so here I am. I don`t want to mess up. Zone 8b/9a line in Louisiana. I have very dark and loose forest leaf mold soil with some sandy areas nearby I can collect to use. Maybe a mix of 20% Miracle Gro soil with this will help. I have bare roots I just got transplanted into every possible empty space in pots until it warms some and the potting soil arrives. They were growing tops when I got them so I keep them indoors because we`re getting a cold front.

A huge shout out of thank you for this video. The result was the biggest strawberry yield ever! I had all but given up on my ever bearing strawberries producing a random berry who knows when and invested in June bearing. The ever bearing out produced the June bearing in June and are producing an abundance of berry clusters like I have never seen before. ( harvesting a half gallin per day through July....They are also still blooming so I have my work cut out for me into the fall! The organic slow release bloom fertilizer added once last fall and again this spring has really paid off.. Thank you again.

From 11pm est to 2AM I've been researching growing strawberries Hehe! I was like "where do you get them from!?" Then I realized that you uploaded this video; thank you for all of the information you share and with patience and clarity! I was confused about how to start growing a strawberry plant if you can't take cuttings or seeds from a plant 😩 Then I was confused about buying a plant starter which seemed pricey...But I see it is worth it; especially with how you can divide the plant up, and get new cuttings(?I believe it's called) once its finished it's life cycle. Time to rest my brain 🧠
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes, and yes! Starter plants can be expensive (although cheaper as we get closer to summer), but it'll be $3 to $4 that you'll only spend ONCE. The plant will send out runners, which will make more plants and then in a couple of years it'll be divisible and itself turn into 6 or 8 new plants. It may take a season, but just one strawberry plant should in fact give you enough daughter plants to never have to buy a strawberry plant again! 🙂

I've done everything backwards lol... I started at the end of September by buying bare roots from Amazon. Everbearing and they have been doing well for 3 weeks now. A few are even flowering in October. I tried to copy the Kratky method with juice bottles while using soil. Those grew the fastest but now the ones with the biggest leaves and few flowers are the ones I grew in pots.

We live in Salmon Idaho. We have discovered that the best fertilizer comes from friends who raise cows, horses or chickens After the garden is out in the fall, spread it evenly and thickly over the whole garden. Over the winter the fertilizer ages so it is not green. Plants are beautiful the next year. the only downfall is you have to watch for weeds. Another plus is it is free.

Novice here but I can add some interesting trivia, if you call it that. As for winter growing, I have to doubt that. Here in the Toronto area the early (i.e 1800's) European settlers (probably mainly British) would grow them in cold frames and use horse manure as both low level heat source (as the manure decomposed) and also fertilizer. They has fresh fruit during the winter long before air transport ! Myself as an urban home owner I don't have (and couldn't keep as per municipal bylaws) a horse. But I do vermicomposting. Being both appreciative of the hard work those little creatures do (and a wee bit cheap) I make use of every little bit. The small amount of the worm castings that sticks to the rubber gloves when I push aside the bedding to feed the worms my veggie and fruit scraps, gets rinsed off into a bucket. I water my house plants with it 4+ times week. It's not an intense fertilizer but worm castings are one of the best fertilizers you can possibly use. My plants LOVE IT !!! Green as can be. The African violets and Christmas cacti bloom like crazy. How could using this worm casting solution as part of your regular watering regimen not be good for strawberries ?

Just one thing... i never had any trouble germinating strawberry seeds without stratification... I tried the paper towel in a dish methode, i tried to put them directly in small pots... all went great... Also tried putting seeds directly into soil before first frosts and they sprouted the next spring. Strawberries are as easy to grow as weed... BUT they need some attention to give nice abondant fruits... Wich you did explain in pefection! Good luck! :)
