In this episode I review the TOPDON TC001 Thermal Camera. It can perform temperature readings accurate within 3.6℉ (2℃) or 2% of the object’s actual temperature, and display a clear thermal image with an ultra-high infrared resolution of 256x192 pixels. This works with Android devices and Windows, but even better, I wrote software so it can run on Linux and the Raspberry Pi!

I just got the Doogee S98 Pro that BigClive reviewed, it has an Infiray sensor 256x192 @ 25Hz which I'm really happy with, but this is sweet, being able to connect it to a Pi. Thanks for sharing! I've noticed I can see my footprints on the carpet for 2 minutes or so. Pretty amazing. I've been waiting for the arrival of an inexpensive Chinese thermal camera. It's amazing and nerdy to walk around the house and note all the useful information you can glean.

This is great, thank-you! Just a quick question before I buy this - does the 'toggle HUD' option also switch off the central temperature indicator in the middle? I know this sounds strange but I was actually looking to use this to shoot an artistic video and did not want any of the indicators other than the person in shot displayed :)

No, the crosshairs are still visible, but you can simply comment out the lines that display them. The code is well commented throughout.

Interesting. At work we have a HIKMicro version of the thermal camera. We thaw raw product at the start of our production process and are looking to document the multi-hour progress with the camera. We experimented with a smartphone saving AVI, but there's a 2(?) minute limit to videos, so that was a bust. I found a workaround to click the still image shutter button at intervals, but it's still a bit of a kludge. Your solution means I can finally justify getting a Raspberry Pi on the company's dime (so to speak).

you can also find moisture issue in your house. We use a FLIR unit to do that. same basic unit. ours was 200.00 be interesting to see if you can use it for feedback to say maintain the temp of your crystal growing chamber. gun at a knife fight but you have it.....

what is "cv2.VideoCapture(index)" should I put for windows application? I tried index= 0 - 10... It didn't work for me. thank alot for your advice and video.

Is this one fixed focus? That seems a bit limiting. Several years ago I got myself a Seek smartphone thermal camera, with a 320×240 sensor. In one 'unfortunate' occasion I dropped it, and while attempting to put the lens back on, I accidentally damaged the focus stop built into the lens housing. So now the lens has much longer travel, and can focus from far beyond infinity down to ~5cm... This is probably the only time I'm glad I broke something lol

There is a setting in software to set the distance, but I have not yet looked to see if it changes anything physical on the camera. It is easy in any case to set up an external macro lens.

I notice at 11:36 when you view the hotter light at 70 degrees, it actually makes your head go lighter colour as the colour map is stretched over a high range. Is there a way to stop this happening so for example all things at 25 degrees look the same colour regardless of max or kin temp observed within the scene?

this is exactly what I observed, I was testing at night and it was cold, the sky was -10°c. As soon as I had the sky in the frame, it spread the temperature gradient across all the colors, making the earth look like it was hot. A very tripy experience in FPV goggles.

The TC001 works quite well together with an external macro lens. I'm using a ZnSe lens with 20mm diameter and 63.5mm focus length to view at pcb's at a distance - well about the focus length. Thank you for the python code. Would be nice, if you would accept the pull request for Windows support, which works quite well.

@8:50, you said the code doesn't "send any of the special commands to the camera itself, it just receives raw data and does OpenCV magic with it...". Does this mean you can create programs that can send special commands to the camera? Or are those commands not available to us?

So apparently you can change the temperature range by sending a command to the camera, by default it does a low temp range, bu if you want to look at really hot objects, you have to push the camera into that mode. I haven't had the time to poke at it much lately, but I believe someone did this here: github.com/LeoDJ/P2Pro-Viewer/tree/main

What is the framerate of the thermal camera? Seems faster than the standard 9fps?

9fps only applies to american IR Sensors since anything above is defined as "usuable for war" and stupidly hard to export. I assume this is a Chinese manufacturer they don't have that issue.

As above! Yes, 25fps as China do not seem to have an export restriction(yet). When I played with the MLX90640, it was crippled at about 9Hz

I have used it outside, but the case is not IP rated. If you wanted to build a trail camera for example, you would have to build a waterproof enclosure, with a Zinc Selenide window in it for the camera to look out of.

The frame rate is high, but what about the delay? Since it's high frame rate if the delay is high would be uncomfortable to watch or just not valid for moving objects.

The delay in imperceptible in normal use. If you run it on a Pi and bog it down enough, say with screen recordings and multiple streams, then it will become noticeable.

Ohh there is Q asigned to quit the program? If anyone have problems, edit *.py script and replace Q with O... have a nice day.

Yes. The close button won't work because every frame pulled redraws the entire window including its decorations, hence Q to quit. Glad you like it!

It was a Pi4 4GB, but the software does not push it hard, so it should work on the Pi3.

On the raspberry pi 5 I get an error "ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'cv2' Solved, forget to install openCV :) Works now!

The spec says an error of less than 2 degrees, and the temperatures that is displays seem reasonable. That said, yes, a quantitative set of measurements is probably a good idea.

I can make out roe deer from about 200 yards. Any further and it is a shapeless blob. With additional optics it may be possible to see further.

Currently the TC001 is 249 with a 20 coupon, and the TC002 is 289 with a 60 coupon, so they're both 229. I got a Doogee S98 Pro rugged smartphone with a 256x192 @ 25Hz thermal cam for 200. If you keep your eye out, it'll go on sale for that again.
