Steve here's my tech tip of the day. When I install new thermostats in drywall I always use plastic anchors then I put the screws in the anchors to secure the thermostat Lol. Peace brother

Wish there was a bit more detail in the explanation of the wires while wiring up the new T-stat. The jumper was used for what? More detail please! :-)

One of my older relatives called me and asked me what type of thermostat she should buy. I told her to buy a Honeywell (at Wal-Mart) almost identical to the one being installed in this video. My relative is not tech-savvy so I didn't want her to spend a lot of money on a thermostat with features that she would never use. I went over to her house to install the thermostat and she gave me a $248 Nest thermostat. I asked her why she didn't buy the Honeywell and she said everybody online told her to get the Nest. I installed the Nest thermostat for her and it worked great except she had no idea how to use any of the features and she couldn't figure out how to switch over from heat to cool for the summer. I sent her a youtube link but she had to get the neighbor to change over to cooling for her. I went over to her house last week and the Nest was gone and somebody had installed a round Honeywell thermostat along with directions posted beneath the thermostat on how to operate it. I asked her what happened to the Nest? She said she didn't know where the Nest thermostat went to. I assume there's an A/C guy out there somewhere who got a free Nest thermostat.

@@billybassman21 - I told my relative about the auto change over but she told me that she didn't like anything about the Nest thermostat. I didn't find out about the auto change over until later. Ever since her husband died she keeps asking for advice about her house and then totally ignores everything I tell her. We found out last month that a fencing contractor ripped her off. I disagree with you. She would have never figured out the Nest thermostat.

I know exactly Billy, father has difficulty making decisions, avoids maintaining things, and then things break down either without a plan or with a plan that won't execute. Yep, they're on window units now too ...

WITH LOVE.. not with contempt.. not with the belief they aren't the same person they once were.. BUT YOU DO IT WITH LOVE... as they made life easier for you.. Just curious, is it true drafts inside wall cavities can fool thermostats because of the hole behind the thermostat? I’ve heard yes/no, doesn’t matter. Some say the hole must be plugged....I don’t think any of my homes had the holes sealed...

depends on location you can use something to block the hole before putting tstat on wall . i have used calk or toilet paper before but i am sure anything will work as long as it does not make a mess

Yes , I was taught to always seal the hole because any draft in between the studs will affect the t- stat. The reason most t- stats have a heat anticipator built in is so you can adjust it to get the temp as accurate as possible.

The most forgotten batteries to replace are the ones in those thermostats. I replace mine yearly regardless. A twin pack of alkaline AA’s are a buck at the dollar tree.

It looks like the Honeywell RTH111B1016 non-programmable thermostat. I installed a 5-2 day Honeywell programmable thermostat when my Lux programmable thermostat died after 16 years of service. Both Honeywell thermostats are available at Walmart for approx. $20 or less.

The hallway is a typical location. I don't see why the proximity to the bathroom should be a concern for a regular unit. Only if it is a fancy thermostat that senses indoor humidity, would the bethroom possibly be a consideration. HTH

I wouldn’t want a WiFi thermostat. A simple one like this is perfect. Too afraid someone might find a way in on a WiFi setup and shut my heat off on the coldest day of the year!

I have a word of advice if you have one of these battery-operated thermostats. Don't wait for the fast-flash warning on the screen that tells you the battery is losing power. Mine didn't and the battery leaked requiring me to put a new thermostat in. Get a maintenance schedule going and replace the battery every year like clockwork. It can save you a whole lot of hassle.

Just run a common wire and don't mess with batteries. That will also get you brown out protection.

Lithium batteries are best for stats

Energizer ultimate lithiums for things you don't want to ruin with leaks. Might not last any longer than alkalines in low drain use though.
