I love Martin Luther King! He just gets better and better every time. I remember seeing Selma, Lord, Selma (1999) when I was a kid (I would have been six and growing up in the Trumbull, CT when it aired) and I vaguely knew who Dr. King was. I just thought he was "that nice guy" and I knew as much as I could understand about him fighting racism and oppression. I connected more with the little girl, Sheyann. I was probably about seven or eight when my class learned about him (like the "I have a dream" speech) and my teacher went on talking about him (I can't remember everything or how in-depth it got besides the "I have a dream" speech) and then (I knew he was dead and we have a holiday for him, but I just thought he got old and had a heart attack or something) my teacher told us someone killed him and I felt the devastation just slide down into me. We all felt it, I think. Someone said, "But he did something good." and it really hit me how racism and hatred works. I had to remember he was fighting against racist people. I'm glad that the man in this speech matches up to the man I learned about. Honestly, when I learned he was from the 50s and 60s I expected him to be a little disappointing to me (and this is when I was first learning about him, because I always got this sense from TV shows, movies, and other people that the past was worse), but then it just got better and better and he really did end up being this great, loving, powerful man.

I suffered all of my life from poverty and opression as a white American citizen. More than (most) black people I have met. And, I once lived as the only white person in my building in an inner city for 8 years too... Where I was mistreated and had my life threatened, as a quite isolated person that kept to myself. No white person would get away with that extreme behavior. But, despite all the young black people who couldn't imagine the life I've personally had...I always was a person of understanding. And, of empathy. Somehow harboring a sense of purpose and burden, for having somehow a better position. Though at times it seems dishonest to say so. Injustice resonated with me though. Martin Luther Kings empowering yet humble speaches that stood up for those made inequal, always made me feel like I had someone on my side, in spirit. Even though, I was made to feel that I "didn't belong" by black people. I didn't belong anywhere.... so, I stood alone in my experiences. As much as blacks are entitled to talk about "whites " and what white people do and have done....and they will back that up with all of their rights and reasons... all it's ever made me personally feel is invalidated and blamed for something I'm not sure I did as an individual. An individual that time and again have stood up for black people. Against my own people too. What happened to black people in América is one of the worst things ever to happen to human beings. But, it was not the only! There were white slaves. Africans sold their own people into slavery, despite how blacks defend the greatness of where they originated. And there are many other atrocities in the world. An example, jews that were stripped and starved and burned, hid in the dirt of a dug hole to escape. But, of course.... theyre lumped in and referred to as "the white people" that have opressed black people. My grandparents all came from Europe. They were all survivors, with nothing more than an elementary school education. My own grandmother siblings were dispersed into foster homes never to see again. They had scars on their backs from being whipped. My own mother almost died of malnutrition as a child. And I'm in therapy for complex ptsd, and I have no family connection, little to begin with, but for around 30 something years....zero contact. I have no house at age 48. I never went to college because working full time was all I could handle. 6th grade was the last grade I passed because of abuse. I lost my dreams to have a family. To have children, while i watch on at others with their dreams and slice of American pie that i was made to believe wasnt meant for me. But here I am, always standing up for black people. While I hear terms like "Karens" and get attitudes I don't believe I diserve. I've gotten excluded from anything that was considered "just for blacks" in the most hateful ways. Which honestly seems to mostly be a spread of drama, handed down and pushed forward in an exclusive culture of hate all while they claim they want some sort of justice for something their ancestors lived through. The only thing they are living through is the talk that perpetuates hate. BUT, I've sided with them about reparations. AND, I've even thought that if there was a way I could help with that that I would!! AND, with all aside, MY MAIN intuitive understanding came from my own insights for having been individually scapegoated, blamed, unaknowledged, or having had my experiences MINIMIZED. So, I always sided with black people BECAUSE they are harmed JUST by having reminders of history that is degrading. They are NOT free of being spoken about. Unlike white people who take that for granted. Entertainment industries create inauthentic inclusion that only seperates people more. Because it's in their face but in inauthentic ways. And sorry but I'm not concerned about some stores not carrying black bandaids. Since, black people need to realize that they are a minorities in this country. If I went to a part of África where I couldn't find white bandaids, it would be fine. But I do know it's important to include citizens. It is but thats not the real problem. And some of the problem is the negativity that people spread. But anyway with all that said, I happen to be a compassionate caring person who believes in equal treatment for all. I believe that reparations would help poor communities come up to equal levels. And I think that reparations would be validating for all the generations and lifetime of people knowingly opressed yet made voiceless. The truth somehow silenced. For those especially not of the middle and upper class. But hey, I'm just a "crazy" white person. One of those white people that have opressed black people. And my ancestors somehow also did.

The quote "I cannot say. A slave is not his own master" is attributed to Martin Luther King Jr., an American Baptist minister and civil rights activist. This quote is often referred to as a paraphrase or summary of his larger statement: "A slave is not his own master, but a slave is not a slave because he is a slave. He is a slave because he is a man. And when he becomes a man, he becomes his own master." King's original statement was made during his 1963 speech at the Second Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where he emphasized the inherent human dignity and freedom of all people, regardless of their social or economic status. In this context, King was highlighting the contradiction between the idea that enslaved people were seen as property and the reality that they were still human beings with inherent value and autonomy. He argued that simply being human means having control over one's own life, thoughts, and decisions. This idea challenged the very foundations of slavery and the systemic injustices that perpetuated it. In essence, King's quote emphasizes that humans have the capacity for self-determination and should be recognized as such. It also underscores the importance of recognizing and respecting the inherent dignity and autonomy of all individuals, regardless of their circumstances. This quote has become an iconic statement in the civil rights movement, emphasizing the fight for equality, justice, and human rights.

He demanded fair and equal treatment for blacks, many of whom were impoverished of no fault of their own. He only bowed for one man who he referred to as his Lord and Master. First the culture needs to change (teach the true history, healing from the wounds of the past, unity within the communities, teach how to use/grow money) before any talk of reparations. Remember give a man to fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish feed him for life. I think the main step that African-American communities have been given is the chance/freedom to make something of themselves. But given the history which has definitely helped to damage the culture this has been hindered. However due to the freedom we have been given, this responsibility is now two-fold which is why i spoke about the culture itself needed to change. More towards looking inwards via self-acceptance, understanding, self-growth and letting it manifest outwards via helping others regardless of race, viewing things with eyes unclouded. Hard and almost impossible probably but I think these are the facts. Thanks for sharing some history.

Either you have a severely remedial understanding of the middle passage/ TransAtlantic slave trade which would be fine if you weren’t so vocal about it or a severely egocentric attachment to the defense mechanisms (e.g., repression, denial, projection) typical of systemic racism. Black slavers were typically slaves themselves. A mere few outliers chose to take part in the system of racism imminent of the day. Three guesses as to why. But like you alluded (one thing was accurate) similar appearance doesn’t necessarily make for a self-determined identity that is consistent with group membership. Anyway, and I mean no disrespect, but I must reiterate, there are accredited academic programs one could take part in to better understand these matters.
