I have been asked about my feelings about Knockout Roses (often misspelled Knock Outs) and wanted to share everything I could think of that you need to know about rose gardening with Knockouts. This includes my thoughts on the opinions that Knockouts are responsible for the spread of Rose Rosette Disease (RRD).

I have had these for years! I have a big yard,so I let many of them grow to 7 feet. I have always noticed a fragrance on all of them. The reds smell like red roses,the pink ones smell a bit peachy and the white and yellows smell more citrus.

I tend to recommend knockouts to people as a “gateway rose”. Success with them is pretty much a sure thing so it’s a nice way to make someone a rose person…training wheels, if you will. Also, hello puppy friend 🐾🌹

I had a beautiful knockout rose, when this rose aged, it actually started to have a fragrance. I must have planted it in a perfect place . I would cut it back every spring and it would always grow est. 6 ft tall, i loved that rose bush. however, i had to sell my home and move.

This is a great video and the point that you made with having continuous color is why I planted these in front of my house. I have David Austin roses and they are beautiful, but I’m ok with enjoying them in the back yard where they can take a break and don’t have to be the curb appeal.

I love my Double Red Knockout Rose so much. She puts on such a show early through Fall. This Spring I purchased the Double Pink Knockout that needed a bit of love. She's grown a good foot already. I also have 3 of the Drift Roses by the same producer of the Knockout and they do not disappoint either. They do have a huge scent.

Nice video! Definitely a newbie here and my first rose is a knockout sunny. Between probably a lack of water, airflow or the 18g espresso coffee puck I fed him, he ended up losing a good majority of foliage. Here we are just about 3 weeks later and most canes are fully flushed out again with multiple blooms throughout. Definitely gets the indestructible award in my book!

Thank you for information. I have 2 red double Knock-Out's in part shade and they bloom but not prolifically. I might relocate them to a more sunny spot. What kind of rose is behind you, growing between the trees? It looks like it's full of buds, and in a shady area. Thank you

We moved into our first home last May. Out front there were 5 established knockout rose bushes. They're not my favorite at all, but they bloomed beautifully. This year, the blooms were very strange and the appearance of the bushes just looked terrible, so I started doing research. I suspected RRD, so I contacted my local Master Gardener's association and they were able to confirm that was the case. Even though I didn't care for them to begin with, it was very sad to see the removal of the 5. We have a very very very small yard, and they left a giant hole! On the plus side, more room to plant other things (they advised me not to plant any more roses in that area, just to be safe).

@@TheRoseGeek thank you so much! Right now I just have a few sunflowers growing there, since I definitely didn’t have a plan in place to lose so many well established things! I’ll definitely do some research about replanting roses there. That’s great to hear others have had success.

Thanks for this great video. I was wondering how much distance should you leave between roses?
@TheRoseGeek
@TheRoseGeek 3 жыл бұрын
Great question Cynthia. For my non-Knock Outs, I typically plant 18-24” apart. This is very close! But I haven’t found an issue with the close quarters. For Knock Outs, they get HUGE if you let them. So plan on 3-5’ per Knock Out. You should space 3-5’ apart.

How far apart do you have your pink knockouts planted from each other? Also, is there a David Austin rose that performs like a knockout? I’ve done some research and found scarbourogh fair might be close. Are there any others you’d recommend? I am moving several knockouts from the bed by our front porch to the back and we are wanting to get a color similar with an amazing scent. I have pre-ordered 3 Gabriel Oak in bare root for next spring.

@@TheRoseGeek the roses mentioned in your last paragraph are Kordes roses? They don’t have a website like DA does and they are hard to find. I’d love to get my hands on pompanella but Ithink that may be a pipe dream at this point.

Thank you for the info. I had to purchase another knockout to complete a bed on the south side of my house. It literally just arrived. We will have some 40 degree weather next week, should I plant it then or just leave it in the pot and overwinter it until spring? The canes are pretty small. I just don’t want to kill it.

There is nothing wrong with Knockout roses. They are roses just like any other rose. Mass plantings with bad or no companion planting makes it associated with "fastfood of roses".
