In July 2022, Gloucester and former Leicester second row Ed Slater was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 34 and forced to retire from professional rugby.
In this episode, Jim and Gloucester Team Manager and good friend, Sam Raven, chat with Ed about coming to terms with the life-changing diagnosis and the impact it's had on him, his family, and friends. It's an emotional and inspiring chat, but one filled with plenty of laughs as the guys also reflect on their recent 350-mile charity cycle which raised over 300k for MND charities and research.
We wish Ed all the very best and you can support Ed and follow him on his journey via Instagram @4edfundraising and Twitter @edslater

Ed just comes across as a top bloke, i'd be saying that even if I didn't know he's been diagnosed with MND. What a tremendous attitude he does have towards having being diagnosed, will be donating to your incredible fund raising efforts.

Amazing, what a guy. Thought it was particularly powerful that he still wants to hear his friends problems and be there for them

What a Legend!! ❤ I’m going thru the diagnosis process! Had a biopsy positive for neurogenic atrophy so the back/neck surgery they were suggesting won’t help, now most possible mimics have been ruled out so I’m trying to make peace w it. Thanks a million for this interview!!

Makes our daily gripes and complaints insignificant. Have a friend that's recently been diagnosed.

Hi Ed I was diagnosed on November 24th 2022. Since then I've done an insane amount of research and also embarked on an ayahuasca retreat in the hope it might help.

Obviously Rugby has had a massive impact in the diagnosis. Hits to the head are going to make a massive percentage - towards the diagnosis of Mnd.

Lol Ed Slater might want to speak to some other specialists because there's a wide body of research showing head injuries increasing the risks of neurological diseases.

That’s interesting. My brother had a fall, hit his head. Not sure when but now he has MND. Will have to ask him some questions about his fall….

If someone’s saying that mnd is not related to head knocks - get a new doctor/specialists. That’s the biggest rubbish I have ever heard.
