Nike Tempo NEXT% vs Saucony Endorphin Speed: Which is the best fast training shoe?

While 2020 has been an excellent year for exciting carbon plate racing shoes, most of us haven’t done much racing, and even in normal times you log a lot more miles in training than you do at events. Which means we’re just as excited about the several great new training shoes that have been released this year, including the Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT% and the Saucony Endorphin Speed.
Run Tester Nick has been putting both shoes through their paces to see which is the best fast training option, including a head to head test during an intervals session. Did you go true to size? I'm always told to size up in my running shoes for room when feet swell during running.

Just my Endorphin speed and ran 5k and....BLEW ME AWAY! Not sure how saucony did it but they did an amazing job. Makes me want to return my Clifton 7 and glycerin 18.

SoleFreak True to size. Ordered 10.5 and no issues with sizing at all, perfect fit. Im in love with this shoes. I thinking returing my hoka and glycerin and get the Pro

Honest review! I do agree with your experience: The tempos are not that versatile, but they are a great (probably a bit too expensive) training shoe for speed sessions. If you want a shoe that works also for easy runs , I wouldn't recommend the Nike as well.

Good video, I’ve put 165 miles on my SPEED’s and I think it’s a great training shoe. Great for tempo or interval runs. Nice feel to how it rolls you onto the forefoot. I managed to get a pair of AlphaFly’s last weekend and first 13km they split between the join to the outsole. Disappointing, will get a replacement when in stock (2 weeks Nike said) weird ride, felt fast but not stable. Not sure I need the tempo seems a very niche shoe. RC Elite just arrived, think that will be my faster day long run shoe.

good review so far i ve found..thanks for that...and i owned Nike tempo, yes 90% agree it is fast shoe. But 10% cannot do for easy run.. Endorphin speed i still thinking to get 1

I have the same with hamstrings and calves feeling a tad tight after using the nikes, still love them just strange you felt the same, love my speeds so much if I could only have one if keep the speeds, will definitely be getting another pair when they re release,

I thought I’d hate them but echo everything in the review. I did a tempo 5k then a harder 5k then 5k cool down. They excelled at 2/3’s, I did almost roll my ankle a couple of times on uneven ground. Endorphin speed are my favourite shoe generally but these are fun. I did also have to jump out of bed that night with terrible cramp in my calf 🤔 maybe the shoe was to blame

Nice video, I agree with your verdict. Don’t kind of have same feeling also in the Alpharetta? I mean that if you slow down the pace seems to kick you back

I think if you want to race in the Alphaflys you either have to train a lot of hours in it or in the cheaper Tempos. Both feel quiet the same and need time to get used/adapt to. The speed is a great shoe but it won‘t help you to get the max out of the Alphaflys. If your race shoe is the Endorphin pro, than the Speed is the best training shoe you can get.

The Tempo certainly pairs well with the Alphafly, and yep both feel different to most shoes!

I prefer the Vaporfly Next over the Alphafly. Alphafly is over hyped. Kipchoge is what makes the difference. Plus the Vaporfly Next is more durable. A fellow runner stepped on an acorn shell in the Alphafly, it pierced the Zoomx foam and split it in half.

I don't understand, if 1 shoe is clearly faster than the other then the faster shoe is obviously better? How could you argue in anyway that a faster shoe could be inferior?? Like "feels weird" doesn't mean anything aside from you not being used to the shoe, if you're feeling awkward and still running faster than it's gonna be even faster once you get used to it thus making it even more superior?

Sadly I can’t find the Saucony’s in any decent colors. Looks like they discontinued white mutant in the US for men. I found the Tempos for $150 and went with those instead. Im a new runner and have a pair of Hoka Arahis for stability and wanted a new shoe to go for speed.

I love the tempo, amazing fit and feel for me. It does promote a forefoot strike which I'm slowly starting to transition to. This will however activate your soleus muscle and make it sore but this is most likely temporary. Also had to go for the tempo because the speed design is too lame lol

Am I the only one who wasn’t as high on the Speed’s? I ran a total of 50 miles and had to retire them due to some foot pain and numbness

Could be down to sizing. I've found the numbness on a couple of my shoes where I've either gone true to size or half a size up.

Me too I experience the same i think is the size and I twist my ankle I never have a injury until my second time using this 😅 shoes 👞

I run in the Endorphin Pro and the firmer ride somehow alleviated my knee pain and forefoot pain. I'm actually surprised because they don't scream cushy comfort during the run, but my legs and feet feel great after.

Very hard to turn on corners in Nike. Price is same for both.

If your in the market for a speed shoe, your in the market for a speed shoe. Almost all makers would be a little disappointed as by now they would have expected to have a shoe just as fast as Nike.

Does it matter during training that the Tempo is a bit faster than the Speed? I mean, as long as you get the work done. The time only counts during a race.

That's true for sure. I guess people like to take confidence from training though, but it's very close between the two shoes anyway

It's actually irrelevant if the Nike is faster if you can't race in it what's the real point of the shoe?? Other than a bit of chest pumping. But then again is it legal to use in triathlon?

Not everyone focuses on races and the Tempo is very much aimed at being a training shoe that helps you transition to the Alpha.

The Tempo Next% seems like such an awkward shoe. Also, why would you want to go extra fast in training if you can't use that shoe for setting official times? 😅 I'd definitely go Endorphin Speed if I had to choose.

Why does anyone need a fast training shoe? From the review and comments the Saucony endorphin is a better all around shoe versus the Nike Tempo. Unless you are truly a professional Runner with a big equipment budget and no contract where you're committed to a brand of shoes. Besides a general training shoe I want a fast racing track shoe, a fast racing street shoe, fast racing cross shoe and a durable stable fast if possible Trail shoe.

Went through 2 pairs, both lasted around 100 miles. The foam at the heel breaks down.

Best wearing shoes I have ever owned! I land lateral side of foot and wears badly in other shoes- hardly any wear in these after 150 miles ! Shoe of the year for me
