I've had kind of the opposite experience with these two shoes. I find the Speed 3 much softer than the 1 and 2 and it doesn't give me the same pop at toe off. It feels more like comfy cruiser to me and I have a harder time running fast in it than the 1 and 2. Even though the DN2 is heavier, I find it faster and more propulsive than the Speed 3. The plate is more responsive and I can get up to faster paces in the Puma than the Speed 3. The Puma shoe actually feels much more energetic to me. I also like the fit of the Puma shoe better. The Speed has more volume in the upper than I need. I'm a bigger runner, so that may factor into the way that these work for me. I'm 6'4'' 225 pounds. So I sink too much into the Speed 3 and don't get that springy toe off. Puma Grip is also much better than Saucony for durability and versatility. They are both really good shoes but the DN2 beats the Speed 3 for me in every way.

Great & insightful comment. I ran over a decade ago at 78kg. Im now 90kg and was going to go Triumph/Speed but I think firmness of Puma means I may now buy Forever Run Nitro/Deviate Nitro. They seem more stable if a little more muted than Saucony's stella line up which for a bigger runner is perhaps better. One thing Puma can trump Saucony on is Grip and I live beside a river so every run will be a mix of tow path fields and road. Thank you.

I have both of these (and their racing counterparts) and these are some of the best shoes out there. I pretty much agree with everything said in this video. For me the more I run in the nitro 2 the more I think I like it better than the speed 3, probably because I like all arounder shoes better than specific category shoes

How about the durability? I have the Velocity V2 and I can tell the foam is losing it's quality at 200 miles. My 2 other Speed V1 lasted 400miles.

@@ericchevalley not sure haven’t put enough miles on them yet. So far tho they only feel better each run because that sort of dead feeling starts to fade. The outsole breaks in some and it feels great. I suspect will get a lot of miles out of it

@@robertarmero6320 I can relate. I also noticed the Velocity took about 30-50 miles to break in, and felt better every times. Except the breakdown likely continues 😂

I have both shoes as well, and concur with the previous comment - for me, the Deviate Nitro 2 is a better shoe all around - better fit and firm but responsive cushion with some springiness. I use it for tempo runs and especially longer moderate to fast efforts. Endorphin Speed is a bit too mushy and a little wobbly for me. I only use it for easier day runs where I might sprinkle in some moderate surges - it can go moderately fast, but not easily - I have to work at it.

Thank you Nick. I have both the Speed and Speed 2...love them...they are my go-to shoe for all paces and distances up to the half marathon. Will pick up a pair of the Speed 3's when I wear out the Speed/Speed 2.

the deviate nitro 2 , velocity nitro 2 or the mach 5 for easy runs 5min/km mid-foot striker, already has the endorphin speed ( v1) which I love, and I am thinking of getting something to complement it. Thanks and congrats for the channel really loving your work

Still have problem with the grip on the Saucony Speed and Pro. I get slipping on humid mornings or rainy days on the roads. They need to sort it out.

Well, I had to give up on the speed three I love the first version I love the second version but I guess my feet are too small. What I’m planning on doing is I’ve got a pair of the original pros. I’ll be using those as more of my fast days and then I’m also picking up a pair of rebel. The threes is kind of like an all-around tempo shoe and it should all work now I heard version four is coming out and I even heard some rumors that it might be a little thinner. My problem is just in the middle foot. I just with those wings and everything I just couldn’t get it to feel the same love your videos. This is probably an older video that just popped up on my screen cell enjoyed. Thank you.

Love the speed 3 and have loads of miles in it already. Just picked up the Deviate 2 after slimy leaves started appearing on the floor and my Speeds nearly dumped me on my bum on a quick corner. Puma Grip >>>> Saucony “grip”. 😅

Great video as ever Nick, didn't rate the Deviate Nitro v1 against the Speed 2 and appears that the same can be said for the Nitro v2 against the Speed 3, you pays your money etc.

If I went true to size in the velocity nitro 2 but had to go up a half size in the elite would you suggest staying true to size or going up? Does the fit resemble the velocity 2 more or the nitro elite? Thank you in advance!!

For the Deviate Nitro 2? It’s more likely the Velocity so I’d go true to size. The Elite does have a tighter, racier fit

I have the Deviate Nitro 2 and Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 (I don't own the Speed 3 yet). To me, the Deviate was much more comfortable than the Pro and despite the extra weight it felt like it propelled me forwards slightly more than the Pro 3. The Pro 3 felt pretty uncomfortable after 8-10km to be honest. The Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 remains my favourite shoe to run and train in (I think I'm on my fourth pain now!), so I'm keen to give the Speed 3 a go eventually! :)

Would also mention that for anyone interested in Hybrid racing, PUMA have pitched the Deviate Nitro at the indoor fitness competition (Hyrox, etc) crowd due to the combination of grip and speed it offers. Many running shoes aren't suitable for pushing sleds (due to grip) or lunges (due to stability), but the Deviate can handle both.

I found the Pro 3 grip ok for running (much better than something like the Hoka One One Rocket X!), but nowhere near the specialised Grip of the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 that allows me to push and pull heavy sleds as part of Hybrid racing. I can't compare it to the Pro 1 as I never used them sorry :(

Im deciding between the Puma deviate nitro 2 and the Saucony endorphin speed 2. Which do you think will be better for me if I really like a soft midsole, but I also want the shoe to feel fast?

@@JindrichVyroubal personally, I think the speed 2 is quite a lot softer and probably a bit faster than the Deviate Nitro 2. I use the Deviate Nitro 2 for Hyrox (which is a Hybrid racing event... sort of like OCR), but I use the Speed 2 for running and training.

Hi Nick, I am struggling with my speed 3, after pairs of speed 2's. Blisters at every run after 168km, on the achilles. Would you advise any alternative to the Speed 3 for speed training (not track, more tempo) and long runs? Thanks a lot!

Hi! I prefer the fit of the Asics Magic Speed 2 (not tested the new 3 yet) to the Speed 3 and use that out of preference for those kind of runs now!

How is the arch support and the toe box on the Deviate Nitro 2? I can wear most brands of shoes such as ASICS or New Balance or On Running or Mizuno no problem but whenever I try any Saucony the arch support cuts into my foot.

The Speed3 plate has a wing design. The part of the plate that flares across the foot cuts into my arch on the inside. That may be what you are feeling as well. I love the Speed3 but sadly can't wear them. None of the other plated shoes do that to me.

@@kevinlattery8490 That sounds logical concerning Saucony. I might try the Deviate Nitro 2. Recently I picked up the Mizuno Wave Rider 25 at 50% off sale and I have been very surprised at how well that shoe has worked for me. It’s very easy to run long distances with that one.

the deviate nitro 2 should give significantly higher energy return has it has a plate which is 70% carbon compared to the all nylon super flexible basically non existent plate in the speed 3 which is only there as a stabilising element

I have the velocity and it has no plate but it's a great every day trainer. All my easy runs I do in the velocity and I love it!

Is the Nitro 2 you have there a wide or standard model? And i heard the toe box is narrower then normal. And so i seen a youtuber say he has a standard foot and never had to buy wide shoes. But with the Nitro he said he had to buy the wide. And he pointed out that all his other Puma shoes he has in standard sizes. So what is your view on this?

Which feels faster and comfortable? Deviate v2 or v1? (without the heel issue). I have the Deviate v1 and never had an issue with the heel.

Fortunately I have both, v1 is a bit more enjoyable than v2.For speed v2 is more reliable. But I do only jogging. For jogging I found adidas adistar cs more comfortable.If you are casual runner like me opt for adidas

Go with the velocity nitro. It it's cheaper and will do the work. The deviate would work anyway... But I truly think it is too much. If you want to walk with a plated shoe, I recommend the Hoka Carbon X (the cheapest version you could find). Somehow more stable...

Highly recommend it! Plenty of cushion and energy return. Not as aggressive as the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Plus but more comfortable overall especially on long runs.

I'm going to put it out there. The nylon plate does nothing. I'd challenge saucony to make a speed 3 without one and test it back to back and there would be no difference in performance. A carbon plate is stiff to gain that energy return which isn't a great amount anyway it's the foam that you feel and so the nylon plate is more flexy to gain what? Don't get me wrong the speed 3 is a good shoe but it's not because it has a nylon plate inside.

The nylon plate is still pretty stiff compared to having nothing, I’d be surprised myself if the performance was the same without it, certainly would be interesting to see!

It is mostly there for stability in my opinion. All that soft foam would get sloppy underfoot without some structure

@@TheRunTesters but if the carbon plate gives only a small advantage over none plated a less stiff plate made of inferior material surely has no effect. I've got a speed 3 and triumph 19 in my hand they bend exactly the same so quite a similar comparison from same maker. But maybe it has some other effect I'm missing. But I still bought the shoe anyway I just felt like adding to the discussion.

They lab tested the foam/plate combo in various shoes and the speed 3 came out ahead of the nb carbon plated shoes. If you wanted to loose the plate go for the novablast 3 as it would be on the recovery side. I find the plate really helps direct motion

@@palmyarmyswim tested how? I know for a fact the NB elite v2 carbon plate is a lot stiffer as I own a pair. Try bending a carbon plated shoe there's a huge difference. There's no difference between a speed 3 or a none plated shoe as I've mentioned in a comparison above. The tests I've come across all point to the foam that is the difference in performance. The nike version coming out on top in most.
