The Joachim storm hit the french coasts and Great Britain a few hours later on Dec. 16th, 2011. The storm caused a cargo ship, the TK Bremen, to run aground on the beach at Erdeven, near Lorient in France. These images are filmed by Jean-René Keruzoré (Air Vide et Eau). This video is incredible.

This film is awesome. I feel very frightened if I imagine myself trapped in the lighthouse, with the waves crashing around me, with no way of escaping. We should always treat the sea with respect. We think we are in charge, but it is clear that we are not.

I always think of taking LSD, and sitting at the top of a lighthouse like this at night in a terrible storm.

Agree! I went looking on YT for that answer. The earliest was wooden & was destroyed in a huge storm with the designer in it. So the next design was like a corkscrew, more sturdy. Interesting info will come back with the link.

They're built out of large granite blocks shaped like jigsaw puzzle pieces. The blocks are connected together like a puzzle and cannot be undone. The mortar used is special, as it hardens when wet.

Kirsten Richards A dramatisation of the building of the Bell Rock Lighthouse in Scotland is available to watch. Unfortunately, I've only found some annoying footage of the drama which has been cut up and narrated over. The original drama is part of "Seven Wonders of the Industrial World' series. Here's the bastardised version. Why they've done this, I don't know. Completely unnecessary and takes a lot away from the impact the building of the Bell Rock lighthouse had on people's lives. /watch?v=1kG3D1tjgqY

The off-shore lighthouse... symbolical, evocative and luring. A mere refuge against the powerful and frightening force of the sea that is both the symbol of the unconscious and the emotions. The building itself is the perfect symbol of individual human psyche, rising from the deep, dark centre of the unconscious, its light the light of consciousness illuminating the chaos, where existence excludes all other life except the ghostly cry of seagulls.

this goes out to Gtrick64 I was thinking the very same thing with such a rugged terrain it is not even a flat surface to get all the building material out there I am a brick mason by trade so now you have to build a foundation or the rock itself could be there you have to get all the mortar the brick this carefully and so forth and does anybody know what year this particular Lighthouse was built and one more thing I always thought that the lighthouses
@johntuttobene8789
@johntuttobene8789 8 жыл бұрын
+John Tuttobene I always thought that they were built closer to shore but after further review of the video you would almost have to go out that far because of the terrain if you build it closer to shore you would defeat the purpose of it because of the jagged rock out further into the ocean but I do have to say this was a very mesmerizing video to say the least I do have to say another thing that the craftsmanship of earlier times is way more creative then the buildings and structures of today I mean just to off the top of my head shame that I work on Bridges would have to be the Brooklyn in the Golden Gate bridges we're definitely way ahead of their time to say the least
@johntuttobene8789
@johntuttobene8789 8 жыл бұрын
+John Tuttobene and one more thing would it be safe touche that this storm was equivalent 2 the Nor'easter storm that was portrayed in the movie call The Perfect Storm where three different types of weather patterns collided to make a super storm would it be safe to say that this is the same type of storm

With difficulty! Seriously, they had a construction crew working on the site, often living on a temporary structure or boat and they worked in the few weeks of calm weather in the summer. When the autumn storms came they left and didn't come back until the following year. So it could be a long process before the lighthouse was finished and ready to be manned.

How does someone build a lighthouse in an area like that even during non-winter months? Wouldn't the concrete would have to completely dry for 3-5years without anything beating on it? The tide must have risen a lot since these lighthouses were built.
