We’re taking a step back from our normal run of the show to bring you a very special exclusive interview with film director, screenwriter, producer and actress: Ana Lily Amirpour as she gives us a deep dive into what’s happening in Iran right now. Tune in to listen to this powerful interview and look below to see ways you can stay informed and even help.
HELP IRAN ACCESS THE INTERNET
This group of engineers have figured out a way to bypass the internet block in Iran. They provide internet access for 300,000+ Iranians. Internet access is crucial, because it allows information and videos to flow out of Iran, and keeps people inside Iran informed on protests, strikes, and other collective actions. Contributing (any amount) to these engineers is a way to help many people in Iran who currently rely on this service for accessing the internet. These engineers must stay anonymous for their safety.

Thank you Ana Lily Amirpour for bringing to light the reality of the Iranian Regime. Life in Iran, especially as a woman, sounds awful. I agree with the necessity for a separation of Church and State. But as an American, I really have to discourage the way you describe Iran vs the USA in terms of duality Good/Bad Light/Dark Hero/Evil Ork/Alliance. Iran sounds more oppressive in many ways when one compares the United States; however, I would like to provide some testimony to the reality of the United States. For example, in my life I have lived in an American Concentration Camp. Not many people have heard of places like THE APPALACHIAN DETENTION CENTER , and they are hidden from the populace. But deep in the mountains in Virginia, and many other states, I can assure you we have CONCENTRATION CAMPS. I was found to have a few handfuls of Marijuana. I faced 30 years in prison for this offense, as a 19 year old. The State will trick you. They will offer a suspended or partially suspended prison sentence, if you complete this 6 month militarized program. Sounds like a no-brainer right? 6 months over 5-30 years in prison? What they don’t tell you, is only 15% of inmates actually complete the program. Or 85% will fail, only to be hauled back to their respective courthouses for re-sentencing, just how you arrived - in shackles. Only… you already pled guilty as part of a plea deal and you have 5-30 years prison time suspended. You only pled guilty because you thought you were going to complete a 6 month program instead. Too bad, you already pled guilty to 5-30 years in prison, and now you are fully at the mercy of the state. Guess you're going to get that 5-30 years after all. Because this program is a “voluntary condition of probation”, typical laws that relate to the care of humans incarcerated DO NOT APPLY. They don’t tell you, you lose your freedom to speak. You lose your freedom to use the bathroom. You lose your freedom to drink water. You lose your freedom to eat. You are forced into labor without pay. You are constantly physically and mentally abused, spat on, being called every name in the book, all day, every day. Being forced to exercise until you're throwing up, or you become injured and have to leave the program - only to be re-sentenced. Constantly ordered around like your the dog of an abusive pet owner. I love to tell the story of when one person was discovered to speak. This was in winter. The entire compound was instructed to only put on our gym shorts and white t-shirt, our socks and boots. It was a cold December night, actively snowing, with about 8-12 inches of snow on the ground. We were told to march or stand still outdoors until someone came forward to snitch on the accused who spoke one sentence. Well no one would snitch. So we stayed outside until the following morning. About half of the compound fell ill after that night. We were not allowed to have jackets, or pants. That is a form of torture. This would never be legal in the prison system, but here in these Concentration Camps, the government has allowed this treatment through LEGAL LOOPHOLES. They have allowed themselves to commit crimes against humanity. I write because I feel what you're saying about how bad things are in Iran. Truthfully the situation sounds worse than in the USA. But I caution you when describing certain nations in a dualistic manner. The United States is an Oppressed Nation. Actually, I think just about all Nations on this Earth are Oppressed in the Modern Era. Just because you don’t see it, doesn't mean it isn't happening. There are a lot of other issues we face in the United States, this is just a tiny slice of what has been happening, and continues to happen. I hope to see a world where all pyramids crumble, all slaves are freed, and all oppression lifted. We are all in this struggle, together.

Seeing your podcast for the first time! Thanks for paying attention to Iran and also bringing such an accomplished artist to inform your audience. I am little surprised thought that Ana Lily Amirpour incorrectly, to be fair she did say "I have to fact-check me", but still I think the screenshot at about 19:34 is not enough to correctly state the facts. The airline that was shut down was not Canadian, but Ukrainian, and I was happy to demonstrate with them in the Washington DC area. There were however, many Canadian citizens on board flight 752 that was shut down by the Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) on January 8th 2020, which was more than three years ago, and not two as was stated by Ana Lily Amirpour. There is a wonderful documentary that I am surprised that Ana Lily Amirpour has apparently not seen yet. It is available on Apple+ by the title "752 is not a Number". The filmmaker is Babak Payami and it is the story of Hamed Esmaelion who goes back to retrieve his spouse and daughter who were murdered by IRGC on January 8th, 2020. And if I make a suggestion Sarah, please invite Hamed to your show (@esmaeilion on twitter) to tell his story and the incredible cruelty shown by the thugs in Iran!

sarah, i love you, but, almost everything wrong in iran can be traced back to usa foreign policy. have someone speak to that and we will start to see what's really happening. believe me, i did a complete 180 on what i thought for over 20 years once i saw the facts.

There is no current or likely US/Iran Nuclear Deal in 2023. Having absolutely no cooperation for International inspectors to directly monitor Iran's stockpiles is a scary result of that decision.
@keithmdragon

interesting and i agree with a lot of the things being said, but... the iran nuclear deal does not simply "give" them money, it allows them to access some of their money that was frozen. the iran nuclear deal does not simply rely on iran doing what they promise, there is monitoring, both in person, cameras, detectors, and intelligence. iran has had sanctions for years, on and off since 1979, i have trouble believing a few more years are going to cause a revolution. look at cuba, sanctions since 1962 haven't worked there, and we are still imposing them! while iran may not be able to trade with the west, it does with china, uae, and others. given the choice of slowing their nuclear program down and not slowing it down, i would choose slowing it down. i'd love to see a democratic regime there, maybe someday. it probably would be a better regime today, if we hadn't overthrown democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favor of strengthening the monarchical rule of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, on 19 August 1953. love the podcast! i've listened to every episode!

"Straight from the horse's mouth," reportedly comes from the 1920's, from the act of checking a horse's teeth to divine its age, rather than trusting the horse's current owner as to how old his or her horse might be. The older the horse, the longer the horse's teeth, which is supposedly where the phrase "getting long in the tooth," comes from, to describe an older horse that is probably not spry enough for horse-racing or strong enough for farming-related chores.

I believe the shootdown of the Ukrainian aircraft was due to a trigger-happy Basiji member who allegedly thought that the aircraft, which was taking off from Tehran, was a missile. This was after the standoff that Iran was having with the US after Trump killed Soleimani. Many Iranian-Canadians who were all working or studying at some of Canada's top universities lost their lives in this senseless act of violence by the bloodthirsty Islamic Republic
