@@TrpleAgnt2011 Dear John, it is good to study things. To understand development and history. It is very complexe world. We are product of all the influences and education in our life. History, culture, fashion, trends, politics all has effects. I see Christianity as base for this culture. And all the ideologies just follow the religion. To fill a void for higher sense. New world utopia as Nietzsche saw it. And I know ideology is flawed. There is no one answer. But the people always fall in groups. This has to be avoided. Ideology has to be avoided. And society architects have to be avoided. Otherwise all deniers go to Gulag or even worse civil war. I am personally an anti Marxist. Since it is not okay to form people according to its will. And yes the analysis of culture Marxist is true. Their findings are true. And actually our culture suffers from cultural Marxism fashion. Actual I am not afraid. Stupid Westerners with no understanding of the dark side of man. In the right momentum with the right attitude you abuse power for the higher goal Some as always just for money. Theodor Adorno was a German-born philosopher (part of the Frankfurt School) and heavy critic of capitalism. 1) Our free time is an opportunity to grow as humans, but we are distracted by popular media. 2) What we really want is not what is sold, but our desires are bent and guided toward materialistic values 3) Our adult issues are boiled down to deeply rooted psychological problems that could have been handled back then but have been growing since. This led to the creation of the F-scale (Fascism)

The claim (point number three in this video) that Adorno believed political tendencies like fascism have origins in individual psychology is an incorrect characterization of Adorno's work. While Adorno was one of four authors of "The Authoritarian Personality", which suggests among many other things the idea that an individual's psychology can be explanatory and/or causative of their politics, his own published and unpublished writings from the time demonstrate that he disagreed with his colleagues on this point. (The recent piece "The Authoritarian Personality Revisited: Reading Adorno in the Age of Trump" by Peter E. Gordon goes into this in great detail.) Adorno himself articulated a much more complex and radical idea that I can crudely sum up as something like "individual psychology is so strongly influenced by societal and political pressures, and the 'culture industry' as he named it, that it is possibly more accurate to see psychology as proceeding from society than the other way around." Or perhaps in other words "fascism creates fascists, rather than vice versa," but as I said, it's a good deal more complicated than that.

It's lucky that Adorno lived at the time he did, he wouldn't be very happy to see how much of our time is wasted on social media today, would he? Add to that our obsession with celebrity culture and the Kardashians... I really love his ideas though, and the Frankfurt school, they feel quite important in this day and age.

I'm proud to say that I couldn't pick a Kardashian out of a lineup. I seldom watch 'popular' TV because I think it is brainwashing. It's corporate owned and teaches people to conform. There's nothing wrong with conforming as long as you've decided for yourself. I also KNOW that news media don't give us the real story, and I don't mean 'fake news'. I mean legit news. For instance, some important people in world war 2 in the US decided NOT to give photos or details of the holocaust. Most Americans learned of the genocide AFTER the war, but journalists had photos and evidence. And look at JFK! I doubt many today believe the 'official' account of a lone crazed gunman. Leaders have kept the sheep people in the dark for centuries, even back in ancient Greece and Rome. Me, I'm content to watch youtube vids so I can learn physics. I also watch 'conspiracy theory' vids, and decide if they're bs or have something interesting that I don't hear on TV. I'm just a 'little person' who doesn't count but I do like to learn for myself. When I'm gone, it won't matter. Who cares about Patton, or Alexander, or Blair, or other important people sometime ago. I'm only here for the beer, as they say. And I hate beer.

@Holdin: The Frankfurt School is, basically, Adorno, Horkheimer, and Marcuse. Everybody else is either: - a.) their direct, if derivative student, - b.) lumped in with them for no apparent reason (such as Post-Modernists who are really grounded in Heidegger's German Ideology) - or c.), like Habermas, an imposter who's got much more in common with Wittgenstein and Vienesse positivism/logisticism than with anything that's ever been part of Critical Theory.
@tlatosmd
@tlatosmd 7 жыл бұрын
@Retrograde: I shudder to think how you could ever grasp a single Marxian idea if you fail to even just read such a simple text such as Marcuse's "A Critique of Pure Tolerance". Marcuse's very simple point in it is that he says that societies at large are conservative (as a Marxist, he may argue that's because of Capitalism, but he doesn't even go that far or deep in this one essay) and will thus only favor and show/demand tolerance towards conservative and reactionary ideas, while readily demonizing even just the slightest hint at any "out-of-the box" progressive thinking. This phenomenon is what Marcuse dubs "repressive tolerance". The Right has pretty much dumbed-down Marcuse's concept of repressive tolerance so that even right-wing simpletons will understand it, and have turned it against the Left, by simply calling it "political correctness", according to which society at large (or some sinister "elites", which in these anti-intellectual right-wing views are constructed very similar in structure to how anti-Semitic conspiracy theories paint "the Jews") would be all pretty much made up of Stalinist Communists or something. In a way, most people ranting against said "political correctness" and "cultural Marxism" nowadays have just updated the ol' conspiracy theory of a supposed "Judeo-Bolshevic world conspiracy" (that was a pivotal motivation in Nazism) by fusing it with a very dumbed-down appropriating right-wing view on Marcuse's notion of repressive tolerance.

This is a very dangerous channel that unquestioningly promotes the ideas that led to the catastrophes of the 20th century. For example, the Marxist propaganda line about capitalism providing us stuff we don't need. Capitalism exists because we don't want to wear the same fucking t-shirt forever. We can't drive the same car endlessly, at some point it will wear down. So an industry needs to exist to replace what we use. We need to have money to buy those things. We need money to feed ourselves and our families. Someone needs to grow the food. Someone needs to deliver the food to the stores in our communities. I can take the most superficial negative about something and trash the idea completely. Doesn't make me right. And neither is critical theory. Without this key element of understanding, we now see why Marxists always unleash catastrophe when they go around destroying things. All in the name of a 'higher calling' or 'fixing the world'.

Adorno was not "very much against television", as the description puts it, but emphatically tried to point out its potential, not only in terms of its educational benefits, which, as he emphasized, should certainly be taken into account, but also the danger that it could be misused to propagate ideologies, especially considering its content being produced as well as received in such an uncontrolled manner and under societal circumstances that may not have changed as substantially as the technical innovation alone might suggest to an audience. He believed that one would have to learn how to watch television in order not to fall for its repressive temptations, and that these risks were not so much inherent to the technology itself, but rather to certain regressive modes of thinking. In a conversation about education and TV which was broadcast on radio 1963 (and later published), he said that "I am not, as I have been repeatedly accused of being, an opponent of television per se. Moreover, I would not have taken part in television programs in the first place if I were. Rather, I am suspicious of the widespread use made of television because I believe that television, at least in many of its forms, helps to spread ideologies and to direct the consciousness of the people who watch it in an untrue way. I would be the last to deny that the medium of television has tremendous potential, especially in terms of education and the dissemination of enlightening information." (Please note that this is my own translation and may likely differ from any professional one, of which I unfortunately couldn't find any online.) Also, for further information, see his work "How to Look at Television", which he wrote while in exile in the USA.

That "sickness" of the mind is dissatisfaction, it's the essence of our intellectual and societal ascension. It seems we have an innate motive for progress, the individual's dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction arrises from considering "what could be", it is individually detrimental but beneficial to all. Those who pursue greater understanding, traded much of the time for thinking and learning for the benefit of all man-kind but to the detriment of their own lives. Those who are not remembered probably lived happier, more content lives than anybody we know from history. Ignorance is bliss.
@logictruth1

Ben L I believe it is up to a persons way of thinking that decides your emotional state. One always has the option to either keep calm or burst into frustration even in the harshest times. If a person does not understand this concept he will consequentially suffer from it. This is what what Camus in his recreation of the myth of Sisyphus, Sartre in his "Being and Nothingness" and even stoicism teaches us. And since this is also a form of ignorance then you might argue that ignorance really isn't a bliss. I've seen a lot of ignorant people who are miserable - in fact I am acquaintance with many you might consider ignorant and i can assure you that one can see how gradually one is emotionally more miserable the more ignorant one is. But that is understandable. You must imagine what it means to be living in a society that acknowledges and complains all the time about our current problems yet never really addresses them in more in depth conversations. As ignorance about those things increases, one is inclined to blame ones own displeasing situation on society without being able to pinpoint what exactly caused it. This person is aware that _something_ is wrong but doesn't know what (or at least not for sure) and how exactly it comes in relation to the end result. Thus he is living in constant fear of an unknown object ignorant of all it's properties except for it's existence. Stress emerges.
@Mike_Lennox

Ben L It seems to me that it is true that the feeling of dissatisfaction is what determines our thoughts and behaviour. The conversation we are born into, determines what we can and can't talk about. The source of a troubled mind could more accurately be said to be, a mind that is not being permitted to talk about it's actual experience. Consider that ignorance, will disempower any conversation that exists beyond the ignorance. In other words, "ignorance is bliss" (denial) is the illusion that tempts us. The reality is, there is no suffering in being with "what is so".

Most people here really don't get it and probably have never even attempted to read adorno, obviously don't speak german so they can`t listen to the interviews etc. on KZfaq. I say that because a lot of those bold statements like the one about Disney are completely out of context.. I admit that his language could be called "elitist" - he was a real scientist and spoke like that which can be a pain in the a.. But his ideas are really the complete opposite of "elitist". I don`t think he was a moralist in the sense that some people here think and wanted everyone to play the chello in the evenings with candlelight and occasional imrovised poems in all languages. I THINK he simply saw that if the majority of people were a little bit more thoughtful, and would think more about the things that they are told ("orders"), things that happened then couldn't have happened like they did! And that`s still true today..

What an insight. I often wonder why people follow certain trends and consume in similar ways. Too some degree people are competing with one another working a job they most probably dislike for crap they don't need. They're buying thoughtlessness, a temporary distraction, a quick fix in hope that it will give them what they need. When what we want is community, love and freedom from worry, be it financial, health or whatever and companionship. Very good as always keep them coming :)

Communism attempts to provide us those things you mentioned but the problem with it is that it's basically a pseudo-fascist type government that becomes even harder to reform and get ahead/become significant in. At least capitalism provides us with the freedom to do what we "should", and loving communities CAN still be found in things like religion and social clubs.

Hello, School of Life! I wanted know if you've done a Sociology video on Jane Addams? I did a report on her for my 11th grade sociology class, but even if I did the research, it was hard for me to understand what she actually stood for in Sociology. I wanted to get a better understanding, and your videos help me out a whole lot! (plus, they're very well done anyway) If you haven't, she might be an interesting study! Keep up the great content! Great video. I hadn't even heard of this guy before. I'd agree absolutely with what is said but I also think that the public/majority enjoy our vacuous culture. Look at the internet, there are wonderful thought provoking things everywhere but still the most popular videos are pranks or animals or terrible accidents. So is it a violent and self interested capitalist culture that is responsible or is it really what people want? Also are you planning to do a video on Gramsci? He seems quite similar but difficult to understand. Thanks.

JackJames2612 He argues that what people "want" is created through our current political and social climate. We're only fine with capitalism because we don't know any better. And a lot people have fallen so deep they even start to love money and become business sociopaths. But this is not the true nature of man, it is constructed. We are caught in our own trap.

The problem with Adorno's way of thinking - especially the second point, "Capitalism doesn't sell us the things we really need" - is the assumption that there's a human being with so much knowleadge/wisdom that he's able to tell us the things we REALLY should want, and this ALWAYS leads to a dictatorship. Who's able to tell me what I should want? That's a rather difficult task. People should always be able to choose for themselves, even if these decisions are stupid, their stupidity must be respected, that's what maintains freedom. Search for "The Road to Serfdom", by Hayek, he says a lot about this.
@jonathanwade8313
@jonathanwade8313 9 жыл бұрын
Where is it implied that another entity can tell you what you need? That was his criticism in the first place. Your attack on his critique of capitalism agrees with that point in a bizarre round about strawman
@iv2016

TheTragic123 "People should always be able to choose for themselves", you're right. I just wish to add here a philosophical and sociological question of free will. What I've learned from sociology so far summarized is that people are always being influenced by their surroundings, so one's decisions are based on influences they get from the media for example. I understood Adorno had something similar to say here, but I've never heard the name before.
@steptb

"People should always be able to choose for themselves, even if these decisions are stupid, their stupidity must be respected" not if that stupidity creates negative externalities for the rest of society. and yes it's hard to forecast that in advance, but in many cases it's possible to do it.

How very true that our minds are sick! That's why early diagnosis and prevention are very important. I think the causes are mainly those " unthought thoughts " and " undigested hurts" that Alain is talking about in his great guide for " Philosophical Meditation". We should really never be "that sure" about our goodness. It may as well be that we haven't really been "tried" yet. One of my heroes is Joshua Oppenheimer who directed that incredible documentary called " The act of killing" which won many awards . I recommend everyone at least to watch one interview with Oppenheimer about it . He is such a wise, gentle and beautiful person! He had spent a decade of his life for that documentary, talking to murders who killed thousands of people "with their hands" after the military coup in 1965 in Indonesia. In the movie they act " themselves". It is really unbelievable! When he is asked what kind of monsters those people are he says that by calling them " monsters" we escape the responsibility of facing the same evil within ourselves, because we are all capable of murder. He challenges all of us " to stop and look in the mirror". I have a very beloved friend from Rwanda, who could escape from the genocide. He said that people who were neighbours and friends for years turned against each other and became cold blooded murderers, and you would not believe how fast it all happened. Examples are many, from all of our countries. So the point is always to keep a certain amount of "paranoia" about ourselves and to check regularly whether we are really becoming the " ethical beings" we would like to be or not. I recommend everyone to take an online test called : "Harvard Implicit Association Test." Do it just for fun! There you can see if you have implicit racist tendencies, or gender bias, or biases against disabled people etc. They don't ask you questions, you just have to put words in boxes. When you read the explanation, it is quite logical how it works. I took all the tests, and thank God came out quite clean. For now. ( Except the result of the racism test about black and white people, which said that I have a bias towards white people. I will have to work on that I guess...) Thank you very much for this great lesson as always!

Robin Beckford The Frankfurt School has become a scapegoat for everything right-wingers don't like. I doubt most of them have actually read anything by Adorno. They often claim that feminism is a part of what they call "cultural marxism" (wich again is just a word for anything they don't lik), yet Adorno refused to work in the household since he thought his wife should do that. The Frankfurt School is a philosophical school that analyses society in a certain way. Not more and not less.
@R0DisG0D
@R0DisG0D 6 жыл бұрын
ThePatriarch You don't seem to know what you're talking about at all. The guy is spelled "Marcuse" and had nothing to do with the "Authoritarian Personality", wich was in fact co-authored by Adorno. Marcuse and Adornos late philosophy come to quite different conclusions and Adorno never talked about racism, let alone trans people and he at times has homophobic connotations. Honestly, please read any of his core philosophical works before you decide if his theories were worth anything. I recommend "Dialectic Of Enlightenment" (wich he wrote with Horkheimer) or, if you want a more radical version that made him unique in the Frankfurt School, "Negative Dialectic".

***** some of your videos are excellent. However, (don't take this personally), but you really should be shot putting out these videos which promote Communism & The Frankfurt School (which I prefer to call Cultural Terrorism). Your video admits that Adorno came from a wealthy family, as did most members of The Frankfurt School. Did you remember to mention that Adorno's work was funded by the AJC (American JEWISH Committee). And, pretty much, everything about The Frankfurt School is for the ultimate Zionist control over the world (please read The Secret Behind Communism). Above all else, consider this: Henry Ford's masterpiece (International Jew) mentioned how Jews were always at the head of opposing ideologies. So, they see themselves as everyone's Shepard. In this particular case, Jews controlled the film & television industry, while also condemning its influence. Zionists also brought us many additional contradicting ideologies. But, I don't have time to discuss that here.
