36 would be great! Go to 4 divisions 9 teams each. Keep the 2 conferences. Each team in your division plays each other twice each season. 16 games. Play the other teams in your conference once. 9 games. Play 1 division in the other conference once. Alternate each season. 9 games. That totals 34 games like we have now. Make the playoffs in division for great rivalries til the conference final and the mls cup!

I like 36 teams too. Some possible markets are Phoenix, Las Vegas, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Denver, Pittsburgh, Cleveland. Though, I would eliminate conferences and divisions. Each team plays every team once for a total of 35 matches. The top 8 teams advance to a single-elimination tournament, with the #1 vs #5, #2 vs #6, etc. in the first round.

The SA disrespect has to stop. Most people in SA don't want anything to do with Austin. We literally have no other team here except for the Spurs. Sponsors wont have to choose because the Spurs ownership group owns SAFC as well. Someone needs to explain something else to me. The Premiere League has 20 teams in it. All of them are in the UK and all of them continue to function and have fan bases year to year, but having another team in Texas (which is literally twice the size of the UK) would be horrible and unsustainable?

With 3 spots open here are my picks: 1. San Diego - Great weather year round, large population, only one major pro team. It would be amazing to have a waterfront stadium but likely won't happen. The Aztec's stadium needs a canopy and would be a good home. San Diego is an attractive destination not only for fans but also players, hopefully attracting good stars. San Diego FC is a good name, please don't call it the SD Loyal. 2. Phoenix- one of the largest metropolitan areas without a team. Phoenix would probably need an indoor stadium due to the summer heat or play out of the cardinals stadium. 3. Las Vegas- Even if you're just rooting for a visiting team, u can still enjoy Vegas. Vegas has a large metro with entertainment as its base. The same issues would be present as in Phoenix. Wildcard. Sacramento- Sacramento has a huge soccer fan base. The plan is already in place, they just need funding. Sacramento would enter a rivalry with the northwest teams, as well as the other CA teams. Sacramento Republic is a great team name and need a great stadium to play in. The proposed stadium was not up to current mls standards, in my opinion. I have Sac Repulic as a WC because Phoenix and LV might not be popular choices because of the climate. Also, I only have teams in the West because cities are further spread out than on the East Coast. Meaning teams are clustered closer together on the EC, giving u choices of who your team is. Canada. I would love to see another team in Canada. Calgary or Edmonton would be a good rivalry with Vancouver.

The best format for MLS is to split the MLS into two separate halves of 20 teams each (40 total), with no inter-conference play until the playoffs. What should each half be called? In the USA, Major League Baseball is separated into two “Leagues” rather than “Conferences”. As the MLS shares the moniker “Major League”, it should similarly be separated into two “Leagues”. [Enclosed groups of teams are better called “Leagues” anyway (eg. Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, etc)] What should the Leagues be called? Well in the USA, the NBA and NHL are divided geographically between East and West, and so the MLS should continue the East/West partition as well. Therefore, we have the MLS comprised of the Eastern League (20 teams) and the Western League (20 teams). In each League, the 20 teams would play each other twice (once away, once home), to create a “balanced European” schedule of 38 regular season matches. This schedule would also be more acceptable to European football “snobs.” With matches confined to the geographic regions of the East and West, the travel time would be cut in half. As the East and West would be separate Leagues, each should have its own champion (determined by the regular season, not by playoffs). There would be two Supporter’s Shields Trophies: The Eastern Shield (shaped like the MLS Logo with an “E” on it) The Western Shield (shaped like the MLS Logo with a “W” on it) Is 40 Teams too much? The size and population of the USA+Canada is similar to all of Europe, which has several leagues and over 100 teams. In addition, there would be so many trophies in Professional US Soccer (MLS Cup, Eastern/Western Supporter’s Shields, US Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup); there’d enough trophies to support 40 teams. Would too many teams dilute the talent? Soccer is a global sport, and talent can be found worldwide (as compared to sports such as the NFL where talent comes only from the USA). No regular season inter-league play? This creates a sense of wonder and excitement when teams from separate leagues eventually do play each other in the playoffs (eg. How strong is this East Team compared to that West Team?) Take College Football for example: Each region has its own league (Big 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC, PAC12, AAC). There’s a sense of wonder (is Ohio State from the Big10 as good as Alabama from the SEC?). We really don’t know until the playoffs, because there’s minimal interleague play. In fact, no inter-league play is actually what makes European Football so interesting. The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, all keep games within their own leagues. Then their playoffs is the UEFA Champions League; and only during this tournament do inter-league matches begin (eg. Manchester United vs Bayern Munich). But Major League Baseball started regular season inter-league play in 1997? This is true. And there would still be some regular season inter-league play from the US Open Cup, Canadian Championship, and League’s Cup. The playoffs would work similar to the European Playoffs (UEFA Champions League). A Group Stage with Eastern and Western teams intermixed (to weed out the best teams of both leagues whilst they play inter-league matches) [Note: There’s no point to have a Group Stage if it’s not intermixed with both Eastern and Western teams. If a group only contains Eastern teams, then just best to advance the teams according to their rankings on the Eastern table. Same goes if a group only contains Wester teams.] The Group Stage would be followed by a single elimination Knockout Round. Nothing more exciting than single elimination knockout matches! Group A (#1 East, #4 West, #5 East, #8 West): Avg Seed Overall: 4.5, Avg East Seed: 3, Avg West Seed 6 Group B (#1 West, #4 East, #5 West, #8 East): Avg Seed Overall: 4.5, Avg East Seed: 6, Avg West Seed 3 Group C (#2 West, #3 East, #6 West, #7 East): Avg Seed Overall: 4.5, Avg East Seed: 5, Avg West Seed 4 Goup D (#2 East, #3 West, #6 East, #7 West): Avg Seed Overall: 4.5, Avg East Seed: 4, Avg West Seed 5 The above format creates a balanced grouping (The average seed ranks overall, balance out to be even across all groups) Quarterfinals: Top Bracket: Group A First-Place vs Group B Second-Place Group C First-Place vs Group D Second-Place Bottom Bracket: Group A Second-Place vs Group B First-Place Group C Second-Place vs Group D First-Place Semifinals: Top Bracket Winner vs Bottom Bracket Winner Finals: MLS Cup Champions The Group Stage followed by Single Elimination Playoff, would familiarize Americans to the World Cup Format. Last point: Promotion / Relegation may have worked for leagues 100 years ago, but US Professional Sports (NFL, NBA, NHL) has proven that the “franchise model” with a salary cap works better. They are the top leagues in the world in their respective sports. It allows leagues to grow together, rather than having a few powerhouse clubs that dominate year in and year out.

I like how well thought out your idea is. I do like the idea of basically having an East and West league; NFL and MLB pretty much have two leagues. I honestly hope the league gets to 32 or 36 teams. I like 32 because you can have 30 intraconference games and still have 4 interconference games. But with the current playoff format (which I really like), 36 would be idea but we would have no interconference games. Two leagues of 18 where the top 9 make playoffs. That’s where I would love to see the direction MLS goes.

I'm with you. I've been advocating for an MLS franchise in Pittsburgh for years. The biggest obstacle as I see it is finding ownership with DEEP pickets. Tuffy is a great guy and has poured his heart and soul into the Hounds and growing the game locally. But financially he just isn't in the stratosphere with MLS owners. We need a legit billionaire with Pittsburgh ties to step up and secure the finances necessary to land an expansion franchise. Mark Cuban? Thomas Tull? Maybe some faction of the Rooney family? Then we would need a political coalition (city, county and state) to get behind the effort. We know how that goes....

I would hope that San Diego would consider using the newly constructed Snap Dragon stadium for SDSU. MLS was a controversial topic during elections when they were trying to decide what to do with the old Chargers stadium and property. Residents here shot down the MLS plan, led by Landon Donovan, pretty easily, so the road to a new stadium will be very challenging. This city is not a huge sports town. I don't expect a MLS team to come to town unless they can use one of the current stadiums, Petco Park or Snap Dragon stadium.

Relegation without relegation. 1. MLS future: 40 teams divided into 2 levels. Top level 20 teams and lower level ' dog house ' 20 teams , only 1 conference in each level. 2. Every half of the season the bottom 10 teams from top would be ralegated the dog house and the top 10 teams from the dog house would be promoted to the top level. And the next year season will be the teams will start from the places that they ended previous season. 3. Each team will play 38 games , no playoffs! Beacouse the entire seasson will be like playoffs. The fall champion will play the spring champion in MLS cup. The season will start in july /august and end in may/june. In this way we can streach the season more if teams from colder locations start hosting later and stop hosting earlier. MLS cup will be in june. Now MLS playoffs/cup is when everybody attention is on NFL , it's crazy. 4. in this system MLS clubs will play total 15% more games than before. It does not make sanse that half of the teams end season sooner than the rest. 5. It would be a nice compromise between relegation/promotion and the current system were many players love to finish the season sooner! 6. There are would be no safe middle of the table place , it will be easy to be relegated and easy to be promoted. 7. The revenue would be divided between franchises the same way as before so the teams in the dog house would no suffer financially. 8. This system would create a lot of excitments all year long.

Rather than expanding the top league (MLS) to 36-40, they should focus on a 80-100 club pyramid with 20 clubs per division. The good news is, the infrastructure already exists. In the US alone, there are already close to 100 fully professional football clubs. I know, I know... "Promotion and relegation will never work here." "It's too foreign." "We'll end up with the same problems European leagues have - a few very strong super clubs, and everyone else". I suggest incorporating other elements, besides one-year results. 1.) Promotion occurs annually, but is based on a rolling three year span. Any club may have a down year. Any club may catch lightning in a bottle. However, three years of futility or excellence are a far better indicator. 2.) Viability of viewership. Clubs must be incentivized to attract eyes. An MLS club which regularly lags behind the rest of the league in broadcast and streaming should be reevaluated, and relegated. A lower division side which consistently outperforms its league peers likewise deserves promotion consideration. 3.) Facilities. Clubs which don't build their own parks, or play in purpose-built venues are by definition less attractive than clubs which make that commitment. No one wants to watch a football match in a baseball stadium, if they can help it. 4.) Community/supporter group engagement: club management just be evaluated by its commitment to supporters at large, and active ultra groups in particular. Not only should match attendance be evaluated, but so should the percentage of attendees relative to capacity. A sold out 20,000 seater is better than 25,000 in an NFL stadium. The main problem with a traditional European model, is ownership. They bought in with the understanding that the league would be closed. In the first stages, that was necessary. We are past that. Owners should be enthusiastic about cutting dead weight (clubs which lose, don't invest in themselves, don't attract viewers, and have weak relations with the community). They could conversely welcome lower division clubs with a track record of making those commitments. It'll never be implemented. But it won't be because this isn't a sound plan.

Should've done a little more research on Canadian expansion, it would be pretty much impossible. Not only do many Canadian cities have serious issues with venues but also it would receive opposition from both the CSA and FIFA, neither of which support Canadian teams playing in the US system anymore. It is why Ottawa Fury died because CSA stopped them from playing in the USL.
