We had them in lots of towns in the UK until the mid-20th century and then they all got replaced with buses. However, they are slowly making a comeback in some cities, but in London there is just the Croydon tram in the suburbs, making London one of the few capital cities in Europe without trams in the centre.

I remember way back when the CLRV started replacing PCCs in Toronto. My first thought was: These cars will never have the long life that the PCCs had. But they lasted 40 years, and they had windows with sliding bottoms that could open! My same thoughts in Philadelphia, when the K cars replaced the subway/surface. And here we are, again over 40 years later, and they are still operating and look fantastic. In both cities, these replacement cars had longer than most of the PCCs. (Notice I did not write 'all'). For some reason I also like the trolley pole, probably because that is what I grew up with in Pittsburgh.

In many actuality large cities like Boston, New York, Chicago etc, they were never ment for “scum” yeah the trains are a bit old, some of the stations are really old. The Europeans had to rebuild all of the trams, trains, stations etc after WW2. After ww2 America just made massive highways. In some parts of the country public transit is seen as poor, but that’s for things like buses, buses are cheap, dirty, and poor.

A similar design was used by the polish Konstal 105N. Its predecessor, the Konstal 102N, is even more strange. The overall body shape is based on the Tatra T1, which in turn is based on the PCC waggon. But the front and back don't fit the overall rounded design, and are completely angular shaped.

@@mariopigwa8538 It's widely agreed that the US has some of the worst public transit in the developed world. The problem is that there is a widespread misconception here that public transit is for "lazy poor people" who "can't be bothered to get a job and buy a car." I've actually heard people use the term "transit peasant" unironically. And thus, there is a sizable contingent who will throw a fit whenever the government suggests spending _their_ tax dollars on transit that they will never use. Meanwhile nobody ever sees an issue with spending _our_ tax dollars on roads that we never use.

Being high floor with opening windows my son was eye-to-eye with the driver of a pickup truck that was stopped beside us at every stop and having a great conversation every block. I agree with many of the commentators: Toronto's single unit CLRVs were not ugly and I'm shocked to learn that they were withdrawn from service in 2019. I'm actually old enough that I thought of them as the "new" trams as I witnessed them replacing the PCCs starting in the late 70s. What was truly ugly in the history of Toronto's public transit was the tossing of the city's entire fleet of trolly buses and replacing them with diesel units. It was particularly awful on routes such as Bay St., the downtown portion of which was narrow and highly populated with pedestrian traffic.

You may hate the KTM5's, but there's two things I like: spacious windows, and with the high floor its a flat floor inside with room for passengers. Might not be the prettiest machine, but they are comfortable. I would argue it isn't even that ugly, its just old and they would have looked fine fresh from the factory many decades ago with new parts and paint.

I totally fail to see anything wrong with any of them. They all appear to be perfectly funtional trams, providing transportation from point A to point B with minimal drama. Yes, a KTM-5 isn't the pinnacle of 21st-century tram design. It can't be as it was designed in the 60s of 20th century. But it still gets the job done, every day. And if it doesn't, for some reason, a hammer is usually all that is needed to fix it.

I think trams are useful, egalitarian & a great investment. I note that my experiences with trams, streetcars & LR are they're well used in many countries (I never got on one in Toronto that wasn't crowded) but not so much in the US. I remember reading years ago the Swiss president took a tram to work. What ugliness I saw here was so much trash in Buenos Aires & the dilapidated buildings in Philadelphia. I always enjoyed my trips to Philly but there was always a building collapse in the news too. Time to spend some money on the US. Buildings, bridges, streets, rail, power grids, etc all need urgent attention here. We're promoting electric vehicles but let's face it, you must have reliable supply to power EVs.

You have forgotten the really worst tram companies, these are in the former Soviet republics, like Kachastan. Endless rail breaks, dented tram cars with missing window panes, often only poorly repaired, often the drivers have to pull off the bracket so that the contact wire does not tear, ...

The livery on the Lille trams looks better than the grey they had previously. Whilst the front looks a bit odd (and I can't quite work out why I find it so) the windows are lovely and big. The ones in Paris are quite nice! And the Manchester ones are fine; certainly useful if I go to the heritage railway in Busy or the Heaton Park Tramway. As a few people have said, many are a product of their time. And some look the way they do because there are safety regulations, etc to be adhered to :)

Any former Soviet Union city has trams that look like cargo containers, so they will easily take all 10 spots here. Plus, CLRVs of Toronto and Boston Type 7 are iconic and relatively attractive, CLRV certainly was before it was retired two years ago.

The tram you've listed as from Paris, while being part of the RATP, doesn't actually go into Paris itself, it only runs on the outskirts. Even the video itself is from St. Denis. I'd say that the Alstom trams on T3a and T3b are a lot more representative of the city.

Well, the first generation of low floor trams range pretty high on the ugly list: Not just the TFS2 or those things from Lille, but also the Socimi trams of Rome, the RT6N of CKD Praha or the MAN/AEG-GT6M of Augsburg (whilst the standard gauge version looks decent, the metre gauge version has really ugly bumpers). They were experimenting a lot back then, since it was a new technology. Also, you don't seem to like angular tram models ;-)

And the most elegant in France is, in my opinion, the Tours one : sleek, shiny metal and piano black cars. Some of the tracks are surrounded by immaculate lawn, in the french fashion, so much favored by streetcar system planners (why? it's utterly costly). If you watch video about it, you think of a golf club cart riding among golf courses… Very classy, judging by the surroundings that are not so much
