The first ballpoint pens started being sold in Argentina in the early 1900s. President Alvear saw Laszlo Biro writing with his invention while travelling in Europe - the inventor got little attention there - and thought it was fantastic! The president proposed him to come and produce them here in my country. He agreed, so the 1st brand was called "Birome" (from Biro's surname), and later became "BIC". We're all proud of this story! Biro's pen remains the best one for me nowadays, but I also like Jet gel pens.

With watch collecting, there is similar distain with how digital watches replaced mechanical watches. That said, for many current collectors, their progression to mechanical watches started with their love for digital watches. Similarly, my interest in fountain pens had to start somewhere, and the progression was ballpoint to rollerball to fountain.

I think my favourite part when I have ballpoint pens in my kit (which is admittedly rare these days) is that they can be used for shaded doodles / translucent backdrops the same way a crayon or graphite pencil could be. A light touch with a ballpoint pen can really get some nice results, which is just not possible with "either full ink or none at all" instruments like a fountain pen or gel.

a few years back i almost gave up on a search for a pen that would work for me (i’m a leftie) and just used the cheapest ballpoint thinking “everything is going to smear anyway so i might as well use the cheapest one”. then i found the jetstream in my mum’s office supply catalogue advertised as ‘the best pen for left handed people’ and ‘smear-proof’ and thought “yeah right cannot wait to be scammed yet again” little did i know i found my favourite pen and never looked back ❤️🖊

Yep. I have a bad sample size because I inherited the vast majority of my basic ballpoints and BICs at work when I started there. 15 years ago. And these were likely old pens even back then. A lot of them have starting problems simply due to being that freaking old. Thus when I impulse bought a box of Crystals the other day I was surprised by how well they write! That said, hard agree. I love my fountain pens too. There's just places where they don't work, and those little Bics will.

I'd consider ball-point, rollerball, and gel pens to be variants of the same category in terms of how the ink (or paint) is fed. Work the same way, but have differences in the ink qualities. Smoothness seems to be some factor of ink viscosity vs. tip size.

I like the fact that ballpoints dry quickly and you can use a highlighter over them with little or no smearing, but they can be tiring to write with. I remember that in the 1970s at school ballpoints seemed to be a fairly recent invention as we had desks that still had a hole for the inkwells that were once needed. Or perhaps the desks were just really old.

Now that you say that, I never knew what those spaces in my elementary school desks were for. I was a child in the 90s but we had very old desks up until like 5th grade, this was a third world country as well. So they were for inkwells, lmao, the more you know…

I'm a big fan of the Power Tank pens. I exclusively use that pen at work for the reasons it's made for: to write at any angle and resist highlighters. It's literally a budget space pen and it's the envy of my co-workers given they have to deal with flaws and annoyances of cheap ballpoint pens. I have to thank Uniball for creating this reliable EDC pen. If they ever decide to make a tactical version of the Power Tank, I'd buy it without question.

new innovation of ballpoints are definitely nicer to write but Bic Pen or any basic cheap ballpoint pen is great for drawing! it's like pencil with its scratchiness and different level of ink-flow, but stays permanent so it forces you to work with what you have. One of my favorite art supplies :)

Never liked gel pens, because the ink feels like more vibrant and aggressive on paper compared to ballpoints, so I hardly ever use them. The uni PowerTank is my absolute favourite. Its blue is gorgeous, the flow fantastic, it lasts for a long time and the one I have is an eco-friendly version that's green and brown, made from recycled plastic and rubber - not sure if it's still produced, but it's awesome. On top of all my annoyances with pens, I prefer them slender, because my hands are very small, but this one, despite having a thick body, is very comfy!

My first not-a-BicStic was a gel. So far my only exposure to Jetstream pens is my Edge. With a tiny 0.28mm point, I'm missing out on some of the smoothness the formula can offer. I still love the thing though. I also keep a Rotring Quattro on hand - it holds three D1 refills (black, red, blue) and a 0.5mm mechanical pencil. When I run the stock reloads out I might throw some Jetstream D1s in there....

In my country we're still required to use fountain pens in elementary school. So when i started middle school and had to take quick notes, ballpoint pens were a pain to write with and they distorted my writing into unreadable gibberish. Turns out, it was just me who wasn't trying to find the right writing tool for my hand. Everything changed when i found this ballpoint pen from the "Joyko" brand. Is the "Parker Jotter" you showed a genuine Jotter or a knock-off? It didn't have the small stainless tip at the end of the plastic barrel. Ballpoints require a steeper angle than 45 degrees to write reliably? They require more pressure to write? I've never noticed that with the BiC stick and retractable pens, Jotters, Zebra F301 and 701's, Fisher Cap-O-Matic, Sheaffer No Nonsense, Pilot stick and retractable ballpoints I've used over the last 60 odd years beginning when we were allowed to use a pen starting 2nd or 3rd grade in all classes except Mathematics/Arithmetic, which still required a pencil. I use the same "tripod" grip on my ballpoints, as my fountain pens and pencils, at the same angle to the paper. Around 40 to 45 degrees. Always have, probably always will. Ballpoints did "change how we write". No leakage, lower cost, not needing good paper, etc. all played a roll. However, you omitted one of the major reasons the ballpoint became the "go to" pen for business and some trades: Signing documents with carbon copies. I'll stick with my Jotters, Zebra F701/F301 (with preference for the 701 for the additional weight), and Raw Brass Fisher Cap-O-Matic ballpoints, and keep a BiC Crystal stick pen in my pen/pencil holder on my desk, for a "loaner" pen. I don't think I need a rollerball or a gel pen, since I have a couple good fountain pens. If I am mistaken ... oh well...

I love a ballpoint pen! My favorite are the BIC Velocity pens, because it has a 1.6 mm point! I love bold point pens; fine points are too scratchy for me and I end up tearing holes in the paper. I love Staedler pens too, but I can't find them anymore and I live in the US 😢 They had the 1.6 point, but in different colors. Gel pens are ok, but I don't like using them if I want to use a highlighter because the ink smears.

you should add hauser germany xo ball pen the list it's ink flows a lot like gel pen it's really affordable it's doesn't dry out even after uncapped for over a day has refills with needle points which a thicker body and unlike other the refills are almost full and it dries really fast. it is hands down the best pen I've ever tried

Yes, my husband has several vintage Parker models and they all have space pen cartridges in them. If I’m remembering correctly, we had to buy some adaptors to extend the length.

I am in my 70's. I remember when BP's were "new" and I watched people rise up and worship them. I hated them. I had to press so hard to get the paste ink to write, my hand was sore and tired in two to three minutes. Those first BP refills dried out within 24 hours. - Okay, that is a stretch. But they dried out quickly. My parents had a large coffee cup of gimme BP's by the telephone. There were as many as 40 pens in that cup. At no point in time did ANY of those pens write! I have tried some better BP refills and I have found I can actually write with them. I shall never discontinue using fountain pens, but I continue to try BP's

I like ballpoints as long as they are very good quality (smooth and consistant ink flow, do not require very high pressure to write with...). They are very useful so they better be good. I never accept promotional pens because they are usually why people hate ballpoints so much! Lol. Even if I prefer writing with fountain pens, I also love gel pens and ballpoints because they have different uses in my everyday life. 😀

No substitute for the versatility of a good ballpoint. Even writes on that terrible paper that you sign when you use your credit card. Also works great on bar napkins. I used to dislike ballpoints until I had enough day to day experience with the alternatives.

Before using fountain pen, all of the ballpoint or gel pens I have are unpredictable hence unreliable, and I end up with a whole bag of pens that some of which occasionally write better than others without drying out midway. Now, I keep using the same set of fountain pens now for more than 10 years without one failing.

NASA Still uses Fisher Space pens. BTW, a Fisher Space pen saved the Apollo 11 mission! After a switch broke in lunar module, they shoved a space pen into the hole and the mission was saved. Video stories identify it as a felt pen, but they see the velcro on the cap and think wrong. I keep a Fisher Bullet pen in my pocket because it folds up so small.

Whoa, my respect for ballpoints has REALLY grown, but still I won't write with them because they give me hand cramps, and the ones mentioned in the video are not readily available in the Indian market plus for a class 10th student like me who needs a new pen (or a refill) every 3 days they're just WAYYYY expensive. Really liked the video tho.

Hey there! I absolutely loved this video and I am a big fan of Uni Jetstream... But nowadays I can't use it because the ink isn't flowing properly (maybe due to cold weather). I even tried that hot water technique but was not of much help. Can you suggest some ideas on how to revive a Jetstream?

the only reasons why i don't like ballpoint pens is because I can't press the pens hard enough due to using too many 0.3s and 0.5 mechanical pencils and can't hold it properly since that 50° hold is waaaaaayy too different from a ~35-40° hold, which is why I prefer fountains and rollerballs :]
