Christopher Lee’s Count Dooku is such an underrated Star Wars character.
@darknorthstar01
@darknorthstar01 10 ай бұрын
A problem I have with the prequels is that I think Lucas tried to cram too many characters and too much lore and world building into three movies. It leads to characters and plot elements that are not given enough screen time to fully flesh out and explore. This why I appreciate the Clone Wars show as it had the time to do all this, and makes the story and characters in the prequels make so much more sense. Though watching or reading supplemental materials should never be a requisite for understanding a stand-alone movie.

It's so ironic that, despite his awareness, Dooku was utterly manipulated by Palpatine, JUST as the Jedi were.

Was he really manipulated tho? I always got the impression that both Dooku/Sid knew they were never exactly on the same page. Not saying Dooku cant be controlled. But he seemed aware of the risks of the dark side...considering how controlled he was.

@@westwardstar1686 Plus, Dooku never developed the yellow Sith eyes, whereas Anakin got them in seconds. That said, Dooku, I feel, fooled himself into believing that he and Anakin together could defeat Palpatine and then rebuild the Jedi and Republic in their image. He did not anticipate Palpatine ordering Anakin to kill him, remember the whole thing was orchestrated by Palatine to turn Anakin to their side with Dooku under the belief the three of them would work together.
@westwardstar1686
@westwardstar1686 10 ай бұрын
@@mpsorrentino This is my issue with the character. On one hand he is portrayed a principled man, willing to do terrible things for the greater good. I personally prefer the legends version of him, but thats another story. I really liked ToTJ. But they made Dooku come across just as fragile as Anikan when he 'turned'. Dooku was the type to believe he could take drugs (aka dark side) and not be corrupted. He does deserve credit, he kept himself in check. People complain that TCW show made Dooku too villainous. But that was toward the end of his life, by that time the dark side, in a nuanced way, bend him to order terrible things under the Separtist name.

Dooku is a fantastic character in no small part due to his actor, Sir Christopher Lee. The man was a goddamn legend - his biography reads like an action novel. Fun fact - his curved lightsaber was designed because Lee had arthritis, and the curved hilt was less taxing on his hands.

Yeah the prequels in theaters was an experience I'll never forget as a kid. I remember when ROTS came out my local theater was showing Episodes 1,2, and 3 back to back. And my family took me and seeing all three like that as a kid was unbelievable. Maul vs. Qui-gon and Obi-Wan, Yoda, vs. Dooku, Yoda vs. Sidious, Anakin being assembled into Vader, all are memories from that day I always think about. Truly an amazing experience.

I think the Prequel Trilogy was weakened because the position of onscreen antagonist was switched from Darth Maul to Count Dooku to General Grievous; this diluted the impact each antagonist had on the audience, reducing the protagonists' impact as a direct result, as a protagonist's strength is always compared to the antagonist's. (Darth Sidious doesn't count, because he hid his identity as the overall antagonist; George Lucas, sadly, lacked the storytelling skills necessary to make the movies work with such an antagonist.) It would be better if Dooku held the position Darth Vader had in the Original Trilogy- maybe introduce him in 'The Phantom Menace' as Maul's master, training his own Sith Apprentice to help him overthrow Darth Sidious.
@heltongomez8865
@heltongomez8865 10 ай бұрын
Great video man. I'm glad Dooku is getting more recognition because he is one of the most powerful Star Wars characters ever. Also, one thing that you should address is that in the commentary extras of Episode 2 George Lucas says that Dooku was looking for an apprentice to overthrow Palpatine and that is why he tried to recruit Obi Wan. This goes to show that Dooku did have plans to become the main Sith lord. That means that in the 10 year gap between episode 1 and 2 Dooku spent enough time with Sidious in order to realize that Sidious was way too controlling and manipulative for Dooku's taste and that maybe the Sith needed someone much more ambitious and less selfish. Dooku's empire would've been better in my opinion. Sidious sealed his fate the moment he decided to bring Anakin to the dark side, which eventually led to his demise. Dooku would've killed Anakin in order to avoid any unnecessary complications.

I'd be interested in you doing a fanfic about Dooku training Anakin. It'd be a pretty interesting concept. It could go so many ways, them reforming the jedi from within, or leaving the jedi and acting independently, or even falling to the dark side together and eventually overthrowing Palps, then Qui-Gon's ghost guides them back to the light or something.

At 8:12 to answer your question @Star Wars Theory from my own understanding of both characters in my POV i feel Qui-Gon would be the most preferred Over Dooku in training the young slave Boy Anakin in my opinion Theory, the reason being Dooku as you have said was very pragmatic both in thinking and how he viewed the living force and understood the flaws of the current Jedi BUT he was the type of person that Suffered NO Fools and was not only a stern and strict master, but also one that does not accept excuses only that that the one he is training learns from there mistakes and just does better (similar to that of Drill instructor/Military Parent) and while that is ok for some but I feel this is not necessarily the best fit for a Young 9 Year old who was born into slavery as I feel Anakin would be more reserved and less quick to open up to Dooku, and let us not also mention the fact that Dooku would probably loose patience teaching with a rambunctious 9 y/o anakin! No the only one I can only see in my opinion would be Qui-Gon.

Disagree here on some of the Jedi viewpoints. It was illustrated in the Clone Wars and even in ESB that Yoda ended up realizing it's important to know of the dark side and ones inner dark self but not make decisions out of that. Qui-Gon was a Jedi that wanted to make the right choices without rules but not without morality. For example like him manipulating the chance cubes to save Anakin. Notice how that's as far as he went and he didn't go as far as kill Sebulba or damage Sebulbas pod or manipulated the race in any way. George having Palpatine say those lines about the Jedi to Anakin is like the devil twisting words to bring distrust and division. And that's what Palpatine wanted to do with Anakin against the Jedi. Sorry theory, but it feels like you're viewpoints align more with Palpatine than Qui-Gon or a moral plane where you can bend the rules but not break ones morality to get what you want. Which is what Anakin did to try and save Padme. The genius of George Lucas is that in a way unlike the OT where he knew he wanted the audience to root for our heroes, in the PT he told his story from the more far detached 3rd person POV... Like a documentary and THAT'S the sign of a good filmmaker. Of course there are moments of heroics to cheer for... And obviously Lucas understands the Jedi are the heroes and Palpatine dialogue is meant to sound seductive and "right". But that's all it is. The devil in the real world speaks through lies that sound truthful. And what that means is lies to manipulate and confuse tragic heroes like Anakin. And unfortunately some in fan base don't use that critical thinking and don't realize that you're falling for Lucas brilliant storytelling and siding more with Sidious. And that right there is the mistake some fans make in their interpretation of the PT. Yes the Jedi became complacent and a bit arrogant but not evil, not wrong in their approach to solving problems. The Jedi way portrayed in the PT is right for an individual Jedi that must follow a warrior code of detachment so that their principles and Mission objectives stay grounded in values and detachment. As well as in the interest of their objectives on missions and the Clone Wars. So to not make anything personal. George learned a lot of this from myths and legends based on samurai, Buddhists, and stories of Templar Knights.

Dooku needed much more screen time and time dedicated torwards his backstory. Unfortunately the prequels started the bad habit that the sequels continued of introducing characters and fleshing them out, outside the film. Magazines, books and kid shows shouldn’t be what starwars used to drive the full plot of characters that eventually get a movie that is why OT was so good. They had no extra content to use as a crutch when the movies didn’t do their share story telling. Star Wars ended up being half-baked stories.

I completely agree. Dooku is extremely interesting person. Really rich history,background. His thoughts,ideology. He's completely right. Jedi are peacekeepers. That's all. Not soldiers,not politicians. They are extremely far from it. They were manipulated,cheated. Dooku was right to leave Jedi. They became to political,rigid,dogmatic. There wasn't place for him anymore there. I think Anakin would be pretty good with Dooku and Qui-Gon. They were extremely similar people,had very similar views,thoughts,ideologies. They would be far better teacher than almost everyone at the Temple.Especialy Obi-Wan,Mace and others. Obi-wan tried his best. But was also dogmatic,riggid. Their relationship improved greatly when Anakin became Knight though they bickered often :D But playfuly,brotherly. Dooku is extremely interesting person. The Force will be with you too,always :)

People saying the prequels are worse then the originals are somewhat right, but with all the additional content it is a really great story. Most people I know that don't like the prequels haven't seen stuff like Clone Wars or read any SW novels and I think they would change their mind if they did.

I’m assuming both Anakin and Dooku would have had two lightsabers because anakin brought two with him? And then Dooku takes the one from obi wan… or is he implying that there was another Jedi present who was slain and Dooku took that Saber???!

dooku’s situation was similar to ahsoka or anakin, they were the few jedi that had their eyes open and questioning why the fuck are we doing this, this is not what jedi are supposed to do.

Do you think if the Jedi temple didn’t get destroyed and/or raided they would add a 21st and add anakin? 😅😢
