Drew I must inform you that the quality of cameras always was very good. They were capable of taking a crystal clear picture pretty early on. The reason why we think early cameras were very bad is the swap from analog to digital. Digital cameras are more reliable and the pictures get saved on a memory instead of "film". But the quality is only good when your sensor is really good and to develop powerful but small sensors needed time. When you have a small sensor your pictures will be shit. That's the reason why mobile phones and early smart phones had so unfathomably bad cameras. The sensor was just not good enough and there was no space to make it bigger. Same goes for early digital cameras. Either they were really big, heavy and unpractical to use or the quality of the pictures is mediocre at best. Photography is one of only a few fields that didn't immediately profited from going digital since the end product was either impractical or bad compared to the "good ol' stuff".
