Outdoor Research MGS Shell Gloves
What is it : These are tactical gloves made primarily for the US Military, they are waterproof, windproof and are breathable and are designed to go over your existing pair of insulated gloves and liners.
Agenda Free Link :
Sizes : S, M, L, XL, XXL
Weight : 4.8oz for the small size
Materials :
MAIN SHELL : 2.5L GORE-TEX, SYNTHETIC PALM : SuperFabric
INDEX/THUMB FINGERS: Leather
Price :
The retail price of these is insane; roughly $270
Did I pay $270 for a pair of gloves? Hell no and that is one of the reasons why I am making this video.
Recently I was filming a rain adventure and my hands were getting a bit cold and I started thinking about getting gore-tex shells.
When I had some down time, this is what I found to go with.
I did a quick search and found these gloves and was shocked at the price so I hopped on one of my favorite sites and found these same gloves for an insane price.
$70.
I made an offer for $30 and the offer was accepted and here we are today.
Brand new, included the tags and even the price tag.
As with most things in life, there is a catch for such a great deal and that comes in size.
While there were some larges and smalls available when I ordered, they were in short supply. The Small size was abundant and that is what I went with and here is why.
Normally I wear a medium but with these being a shell I figured that a small would work for my needs as I am a fan of wearing very thin gloves throughout most of the winter. They allow for me to move, be active and not get overheated and these shells in conjunction with my gloves, looks like a perfect combination. With gloves like this I generally stay warm in temps all the way down to 0 but that is what I am acclimated to.
Will it be? We will find out and I will do a followup in the future once I have fully tested them.
Until then I wanted to get this video up, let you know of the product, the deal that I got and if you can get the size to work it may benefit a few of you.
By the way, at the time of filming, I saw multiple sizes on eBay including Large, those were going for roughly $50 but were limited in quantity. I didn’t see any mediums.
From the Company :
MGS :
The MGS Shell Gloves are part of the new Modular Glove System (MGS), a complete collection of protective handwear that have been designed to work together for optimal dexterity, tactility, and reduced weight. Each of these pieces utilizes Outdoor Research exclusive 3D Fit Technology™; a new generation of 3D modeling pattern-making that allows total freedom of movement and functionality. The waterproof, breathable, and fast drying MGS Shell Gloves™ are intended to be an outer shell worn over various liner glove combinations; from an MGS insulated liner to a thin combat glove.
MonoCinch
Elasticized Inner Wrist
Seam Taped
Testing :
I’ve had these gloves in for a short period of time and hope to begin testing them out in a winter storm that is coming in next week. My experience is limited but I did do some quick waterproof testing at the house and put my hands with the gloves on in the Creek for 5 minutes and experienced no leaking. I could feel the coolness of the water but yet, there was no penetration through any seams.
Good fit especially with the thinner gloves that I like to wear.
Grippy palms and fingers
Works great with phones including Samsung and iPhone.

A cheap alternative for people based in UK/EU are MTP ECW Gore-Tex shell mittens. ~121g for size small, breathable and waterproof, usually around $20.

@@tommieboi707 I live in the UK and wish US brands have more accessible pricing in the UK. A lot of them double their prices for the UK market, like Nemo and Sea to Summit, granted Sea to Summit is Aussie. Vango is alright but can't compare to Nemo, S2S or even Big Agnes. It used to be good - home-grown Scottish brand but nowadays has fallen far behind in terms of innovation. Products tend to be heavy and bulky, though still good quality.

Awesome review! My biggest thumbs down with ANY glove is when there is a inner thats not fastened. So when you are moist in the hands, pull the glove off and the inner follows out. It the worst feeling in the world (not really) when you gotto insert your hand and like poke the inner into the outer.. Hate it.

I use a pair of MTP goretex mittens - military surplus, they go for around 5 to 10 British pounds in the UK. They're outers, to go over normal gloves - I haven't tested to see if they're water proof, but boy are they wind proof, which is why I bought them. Like a lot of british military surplus, they're described as goretex, but whether they really are, I don't know. They go quite a long way up the arm, possibly look a bit silly, but I like them.

I had some great waterproof gloves when I was in college: I wore some of those rubber monster hands from the halloween store over a 99-cent pair of acrylic stretch gloves. Kept my hands warm and dry, never leaked, and best of all, the total cost was $6. Also, the 6 year old who lived next door thought I was just about the coolest adult he'd ever met. :D

Note! You may want to double check the sizing. From what i have found, the tag #38 is size XL. I noticed that your pair were marked 37. I am thinking that you may have a bigger size that Small, that you mentioned in the video. I could be wrong of course.

My problem with gloves is that, for regular gloves sizing, my palm measures for a medium, but my fingers measure for a large. So I have never found a pair of gloves that really fit well. I settle for a medium, but it always feels too tight on my fingers and they're resisting the gloves. Thus, my first impression upon seeing these gloves is that its got such stubby fingers relative to the sack-like palm. Did you notice any issues with that?

At the price there should be a rope to run through the jacket to connect both gloves. But no matter what I would setup a rope system to hook both gloves together also it would be nice to just pull them off and not have to worry about where they are or trying to stuff them in a pocket.

I completely understand the notion that the price is egregious and that they might have been going for military pricing but I the MGS was designed specifically for SOCOM to complement their PCU line up, and that itself is the SOCOM equivalent to the ECWCS. Yes there are much more economically sound options out there that will get the job done and you can definitely save money by hunting for deals but as outrageous as the pricing was, these were purpose designed for professional users. Also It wasn't until about a week ago that these products were available for purchase directly from outdoor research, it used to be restricted.

For the military i think they make sense i could see them charging 120 bucks , down to zero degrees is pretty good , it beats wearing mutant gloves and having no dexterity and having your gloves possibly get wet .
