As a huge Tolkien buff, same. It sucks that so many conservative loosers are whining about diversity that good faith criticism like this just gets lost. I´m happy about the diversity and actually hope they handle it sensitively but I´m also not looking forward to the show at all because I worry they´ll heavily misrepresent these characters and stories that I love (esp since it seems like they´ll be tackling the Akallabeth)

I'm impressed that Stan Lee said that. I'm happy to hear it. That is literally my philosophy on all acting roles. There may be some nuance to that as a general rule, to be fair, but superficial aspects of a person's appearance mean so little to me in media. It's an art form, and, as such, the goal is to bring forth a CHARACTER, which has much more to do with the character's internal qualities.

FUN FACT: The actually racist or sexist are a mini-tiny-tiny-mini Minority in the Tolkien-Fans. Fun-Fact: You have been deluded into believing in a Strawman, among other Things. Those that genuinly dislike Repsensetation itself are a TINY MINORITY under those who are s-ck of 'TWISTED Representaiton' AKA Wokeness. The constant genderswappinga and racebending is absolutely s-ck, even if we ignore how dangerous it is to water-down all the terms like R-cist and S-xist IN A WORLD where those THINGS still exist, duh! And thats not even mentioning how people jsut do not feel represented by Wokeness, HENCE why we see it objectively fail. We can look at the Numbers and Data and all that and see: Oh yeah, people dont want Diversity being TWISTED and/or THRUST INTO THEIR FACE. Wokeness isnt called by all Popculture Experts harmful af for no reason. I cant even summarize all this cause theres so much. But lets have one thing for Protocoll: Wokeness isnt criticized by -ists and -bics only, but in fact by all Experts and some Trillion more Dudes. Literally the most badass scene in the book: “Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!” A cold voice answered: ‘Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shriveled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye.” A sword rang as it was drawn. “Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may.” “Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!” Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. “But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund’s daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.”

@@Jane-oz7pp I've seen a lot of those lotr fans trying to downplay Eowyn's role and even say that she didn't play an important part in killing the Witch King and it was all just Merry. They really don't understand Tolkien and his work. Firstly, in one of his letters he confessed his disappointment after seeing "Hamlet" regarding Ophelia and her role in the story. He complained about the fact she had no agency and had no influence on her own fate, that all she could do was to die. He wanted to write women in stories to be much more than how they're portrayed in those classic "traditional" stories. The character of Eowyn was n effect of those conclusions. Apart from her, Galadriel is one of the most powerful characters in Middle-Earth, Luthien was known for her bravery and readiness to risk everything, even her life for Beren and with him faced Morgoth himself (Sauron's boss basically), retrieving the Silmaril, Haleth was one of the first leaders of Men, Rohan (before the events of lotr) had shieldmaidens bearing arms in fights. Secondly, remembering that Tolkien was a professor of Anglo-Saxon and English language, it's pretty apparent that he wrote this moment purposefully to be an equal cooperation of those two characters. The prophecy said that no man can kill the Witch King. Eowyn was no man because she was a woman and Merry was no man because he was a hobbit. It shows that the prophecy contained two meanings of the word man at once - man as in gender and man as in human (the way it's used in english language, that's why I think this can be lost in translation to other languages). Thus it was meant for them to do it together and it can be speculated that one would not accomplish it without the other.

I think out of all things to be upset about with The Rings of Power, representaion of diversity is not one of them. My problem with this upcoming series is the lack of care for the source material. Certain characters would not wear certain families symbols. Period! Female dwarves have beards!! I love Galadriel having a bigger role. I don't mind the original characters. I don't have high hopes for this series. Amazon sucks. And adaptations rarely go well, especially if it's a cash grab.

@Erratum "This is how Tolkien intended his lore" - We have true Tolkien understander here. Are you Tolkien or his son? Have you talked with him about dwarven skin colors in person or through letters? What tells you it was crucial for Tolkien that Middle-earth remained an ethnostate? From my readings of his works I would say that skin colors were some of the least of his concerns regarding his intentions for the reader to focus on. The point of LotR was about being good people, doing what's right, opposing tyranny, cultivating friendships and kindness above all when the world around you is filled with violence and cruelty. I didn't find anything that would suggest that Tolkien's intention for the story's message was "Middle-earth needs to be racially pure, no blacks allowed". "Middle earth is middle age europe. Haradrims are africans" - Firstly, you do realize there were black and brown people in medieval Europe? Or are you purposefully ignorant? Secondly, Middle earth is not middle age Europe. There is no roman and gothic architectual style, there is no catholic church and so on. Geographically Middle-earth is *based* on medieval Europe ("is based" is different than just "is"). Culture-wise Middle-earth is *inspired* by some literary traditions of middle age Europe. That's different. Middle-earth is based on some celtic, nordic and medieval legends. They aren't historical records. They mostly contain fantastical elements and most of all are *fictional* for the most part. Apparently you lack proper reading comprehension to understand my comment or purposefully omit its point. The creation of Arda and its inhabitants is completely different than the formation of our Earth and its life. Life on earth is forming through the process of evolution. Light comes from the Sun along with radiation. First homo sapiens was black. African people are black due to evolutionary process of adapting to constant exposure to Sun's cancer inducing radiation. That's what more melanin in their skin is for. In evolutionary process white people are basically a mutation. Arda was created by Eru and his choir of Valar. Arda is a flat plane. The life on Arda, which includes all humanoid races, was created not evolved. The light on Arda doesn't come from a radiating star. Sun in Tolkien's world is a vessel that holds the light of the last fruit of Laurelin. It isn't govern by the same laws of physics. Therefore skin colors are not an effect of evolution and adaptation to the environment. That's why those "nerds" are wrong when they say that dwarves cannot be black because they live underground away from the sun. That would be the case in our world in which evolution exist and the Sun is a real star that radiates. Arda is not a world like that, therefore this argument falls flat and shows that they either don't really understand Tolkien's world and its lore or purposefully omit it for the sake of the argument because they see Middle-earth as their aryan haven and don't want to see black people there. That's what my comment was about. Dwarves were created by Aule. He was a craftsman and a smith. He worked with metals and rocks. It isn't unlikely that when creating the dwarves he used rocks, metals and clays in his creation (since he wasn't as powerful as Iluvatar that could create out of his will and music only) and those materials have different colors.

Yeah. The whole point of the story was going against those old myths and legends with strong "hypermasculine" heroes like Beowulf. The story shows that heroism doesn't have to require physical strength and mastery in combat. It was about showing that even the weakest (physically) person can be a hero and save the entire world. Bravery in those classic fantasy hero stories (Conan the Barbarian is a great example) is associated with physical strength, self-assurance, even arrogance and pride, being brutal. In LotR bravery is choosing to do what's right and necessary even when you aren't a great strong fighter, even when doing what's right requires unbelievable sacrifice and the fate isn't in your favor, even when the doom of failure is hanging above you. It's having hope and trying even in the darkest moments when all seems lost. Finally, it's frienship and support against all odds, remembering and practicing love, kindness and mercy when the world around you becomes cruel and brutal.

Japan's isolation was a political choice, not cause it was an island. There were also still white, black, and other brown folks there too, just not as many as now. Like, obviously ancient Greece interacted directly with black folks, even if you argue that Egypt isn't black, they were trading with folks farther south, sometimes known as the Kushites, sometimes known as the Ethopians (greeks used the latter). They actually wrote about how it makes sense that they would be darker skinned, because they believed them to be at the end of the world, where there were mountains, so they figured they were further up on a mountain and thus closer to the sun. They weren't exactly wrong either! But they also go further. Folks were trading with the norse as well, and the norse were doing a ton of trading with the middle east. You can find ancient writing from both cultures in the other's lands! None of these cultures were hyper isolated like these dorks seem to think. When I watch LOTR, I want movies to stick to the Tolkien lore, which takes roots in the Northern Europe methodology and medieval type of shit. In all these examples I wanna feel a certain cultural tone that goes with the story and its heroes. Any politics, modernity or out-of-nowhere “wokeness” immediately destroys the heart of the story and makes it feel forced. That’s why fans don’t like it. And btw, there people of darker skin (like Middle East) in Tolkien’s works, they’re called Easterlings. It’s pretty irresponsible to accuse Tolkien of being racist or white supremacy - his works began being published nearly 100 years ago. To judge him for the lack of diversity in his works that were of a time when he would have had little exposure to any diversity is ridiculous. Tolkien’s world was white and masculine because that was his world…. Homosexuality, gender dysphoria wasn’t a thing at all. …. The problem isn’t that Amazon is diversifying the cast or characters, it’s that they are using these modern ideas, like you are, as a way to criticize Tolkiens work and the fans and suggesting his work needs correcting. Your telling fans that modern politics are more important than anything. It’s sad that Amazon and people like you cannot find value in what exists as it is. Perhaps LOR doesn’t fit within modern sensibilities and should be shelved forever and perhaps imagine a fantasy world, independently, that fits their ideas…. Though, to be successful, you’d have to have talent and original ideas.

that one user's argument that "lord of the rings is based on eastern europe so poc characters dont belong here" is so fucking grating cause 1: if its based on eastern european mythology then WHERE are the elements that are **DISTINCTLY** eastern european? (i apologize if i did indeed miss anything distinct as i was mostly raised on and am more familiar with eastern slavic(like russian/ukrainian/belorusian) stories and elements) 2: even if the first point were to be nullified, if it's based on **EASTERN EUROPEAN** mythology, why do so many characters have **ENGLISH** (and variants of ones from those isles) accents? last time I checked, the british isles are *nowhere near* eastern europe. also as many people have already said, mideval europe (as in-all of europe) was more ethnically diverse than people would assume. poc characters in a setting supposedly based on "eastern europe" is a hundred times more believable than a setting based on "eastern europe" where everyone has an accent from an island off the coast of the opposite side of the continent (edits: spelling corrections)

They might mean the very heavy influences of Finnish/finno-ugrian mythology in Tolkien's work which geographically could be called (north)eastern Europe. Like there are a lot of similarities between the Silmarillion and Kalevala (finnish national epic), plus the elvish language Quenya is based on Finnish language. But even so their argument is still stupid. Tolkien also took a lot of inspiration from Norse mythology, Saxon legends like Beowulf and Celtic mythology. Oh, and did you know that in Norse mythology one of the words for dwarves is *_svartálfr_* which literally means *"black elf"* or _myrkálfr_ meaning "dark elf", "murky elf" or "dusky elf". Much of what we envision as European mythology and medieval times came about during the National Romanticism era in the 19th century. Actual medieval Europe wasn't all white, especially in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean where different continents met and much trade took place (big trading hubs have always been cultural melting or at least meeting points). A similar point can be made about their argument concerning women. Also Tolkien was quite progressive for his time. Galadriel is literally the most powerful elf in Middle-Earth, Eowyn is a warrior princess who killed the fckin undead Witch-King of Angmar and the leader of the Nazgul. In the Silmarillion there are the likes of Varda, Melian and Luthien who are all certified badasses. Arwen might have had a more passive role in the books but she was heavily implied to be the reincarnation of Luthien. I'm not overly optimistic about this new series but NOT because there are _*gasp_ POCs in it. Those people are just trying to hide their racism & bigotry behind a false concern for the source material. To hell with them.

His own sources changed quite a lot. Later on he started drawing similarities between the numenoreans and the Egyptians. Not just culturally but even visually. Gondor was stated as having been on (if parallels can be drawn) the same latitude as the Mediterranean. Most important to note is that his own view was constantly evolving as he delved more deeply into his fantasy world, and when he considered adaptations (like the scripts that were pitched to him) he was more concerned with the core of the story and the sentiment of the locations (he hated fairy castle lothlorien and changes to Frodo and Sam’s characters) than changes in physical characterization. Honestly nothing would have pissed him off more than the pj lotr films with faramirs temptation and evil denethor. He was also fine with entire segments or parts of the story being changed as long as the core was intact. He literally recommended removing the battle of helms deep for taking too long in the narrative of one of the adaptations pitched to him.

To address the accent thing, sure it’s inaccurate to say that they would all be speaking with English accents, but a lot of Europe doesn’t even speak English, so speaking in English regardless of accent doesn’t make sense in many cases, if we’re basing this off the entirety of Europe. An American accent would make no sense whatsoever as it only began to exist after NA was colonized. Having accents of people who did not learn English as their mother tongue but learned it later in life would be the most accurate, but as the languages they would’ve spoken before learning English don’t actually exist (for the most part. Quenya and Sindarin exist, but as there are no native speakers, we don’t know what the accent of someone who learned English after growing up with this language would be like), there’s no way to have those accents. An English accent makes the most sense IMO, but I’m now curios, what would you say? Maybe I’m missing a solution.

Also Galadriel being changed from amazingly powerful mage and powerful leader in the second age to... Hot head with a sword and armor. It's not about race, it's about changing and completely ignoring the works of Tolkien in the PLOT and lore, skin color or not. Thank you for talking about this. I've seen very few people discussing the blatant racism and queerphobia coming from these types of fans. Literally, if your only complaint about the show is that there are a few black characters then you're just racist full stop. As someone who grew up on LOTR and The Hobbit movies (they were literally my favorite things ever) and as a mixed woman, it's so nice to see that there are characters in this world now who look a little like me and my family. Legit the Dwarvin princess and the Elf dude look amazing and so beautiful and I can't wait to watch this show!! I hope it's good and I enjoy it!! If the show is bad however, it won't be because of POC existing lmao.

@Hannah PoC here. Believe me, they get it. They just don't want to admit the fact that the casting has more to do with politics and studio mandates than the actual lore which every serious Tolkien fan would obviously care about (and they are right to do so). Amazon isn't even shy about it themselves. And when the fans bring it up, no matter how cordial they are, they will be branded as what the OP laid out so plainly: racist, full stop. Without contextualizing anything everyone who has concerns about the show's direction said. Fun times. I am surprised PoC would actually support token hiring because it does nothing to advance the cause of representation when you are just literally swapping characters since there's a quota that needs to be filled. We should be demanding for authentic roles for our PoC actors, not shoehorning them wherever possible which may also contribute to the erasure and dishonest reimagining of other people's heritage. It's a lose-lose situation. If anything ruins this show, it will only be one of two things; it's either bad writing, or the politics injected in it. Maybe we will even get both. That said, I honestly would love to be proven wrong about my assumptions for this show.

Literally in Norse mythology (which was a big source of inspiration for Tolkien) one of the words for dwarves is *_svartálfr_* which literally means *"black elf"* or _myrkálfr_ meaning "dark elf", "murky elf" or "dusky elf". A race that literally LIVED in darkness/underground.

@@hounddog1 Believe me I know what I'm talking about, which is Norse mythology. _Svartálfr/Svartálfar_ (plural) are used interchangably in the Prose Edda with _Dvergar_ (dwarves) as noted by scholars. I gave the literal translations of _svartálfr_ & _myrkálfr._ This is sometimes confused with _Dökkálfr/Dökkálfar_ which also translates to "dark elves" who are in Prose Edda described as "blacker than pitch" and live underground, as opposed to _Ljósálfar_ or "light elves" said to be "fairer than the Sun to look at". _Ljósálfar_ and _Dökkálfar_ resided in Álfheimr, world of the elves, while _Svartálfar/Dvergar_ lived in Nidavellir/Svartálfheimr, a dark world of dwarves. Now, all these are magical mythological races and how exactly did Vikings envision them we'll never know (though the Viking traders who reached Constaninople and the Mediterranean surely saw PoCs). So why couldn't PoCs portay these elves and dwarves? Nothing about the source material says they had eurocentric features.

The problem here is that you are responding to the worst, most hare-brained criticism by bigoted people of the teaser. There are better worded, balanced, legitimate criticism of the creative liberties and current political ideology being shoehorned into Tolkien's narrative, without really adding on to the quality of the work. Jackson's replacement of Glorfindel with Arwen (in rescuing Frodo) in the film, worked well without diluting the narrative power of the story. If each side responds to the worst elements of the other side and pats themselves on the back for it, there is no meaningful dialogue and exchange of thoughts. The teaser doesn't really bode well for the quality of the series, and seems to focus more on covering the entire gamut of races on middle Earth than focussing on prominent stories of the Second Age. I might as well be wrong on it when the series comes out, but catching the most low-hanging fruit by trolling the trolls themselves isn't adding much to the conversation about the Rings of Power teaser.
