I’ve now used my Cleveland chipper for Four rounds and can honestly say this has been the most impactful club I’ve ever gamed. Use a putting stroke and it’s hard to hit a bad shot with it.

One thing I like about the Cleveland chipper is that it has a little more loft than the Ping Chipper. I think 42 degs for the Cleveland versus 38 or 39 for the ping. Not a huge difference but mine seems to pop the ball up nicely like a wedge would and not as “bump and run”
@Alan_Edwards
@Alan_Edwards 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I also tried a Tour Edge chipper since it was half the price and it was more like a putter with an angled face. The sole on the Cleveland is what really makes it unique. The design just makes it easy to get some height on the ball quickly. With some practice you can pop the ball up from the dirt even. Love it.

I use it like a regular wedge a lot putting it in the front of my stance and hinging my wrists. It pops nicely out of any lie but still gets good roll. It may not be the best thing you can do but it’s very consistent which is generally worth more over a whole round rather than hitting 1-2 really good regular chips and a lot that land short or get bladed

I have all 3 of the Cleveland Smart Sole wedges. I LOVE the C-wedge (chipper) , i use the G wedge (gap) on approach shots and the S-wedge (sand) only out of bunkers. You should do a comparison between the Cleveland C-Wedge chipper and the Ping chipper. They have different lofts. I would to see your opinion Andy. Thanks for the great videos. I watch them all !

I've made a lot of changes to my bag over the past few weeks to improve forgiveness and performance. One of the first things I did was to replace my previous wedges with the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 chipper, gap wedge and sand wedge as I'd been duffing many of my wedge shots w/n 100 yards. I also replaced my long irons with Srixon Z-U85 utility irons as my long irons were inconsistent in terms of both distance and accuracy. More recently, I've also added a high-moi face-balanced mallet putter (replacing my Ping B-60 putter) that better matches my pendulum putting style. At the moment, I'm shooting in the mid to high-80s and I'm hoping the changes in my bag will help me in my effort to get down to the low 80s/high 70s. I guess time will tell.

My gap wedge is my go to chipper unless its buried in the rough. I just find it has perfect loft and bounce for chip and runs, even out to about 30 yards. I suppose with confidence and practice i could make the Ping work as well or even better. Good video.

I use cbx zipcore in 60 54 and 48, with the Cleveland chipper . The chipper turns out to be useful in more situations than I thought. If it's a 50/50 between one of my wedges and my chipper, I go with the chipper. The putter length shaft makes for easier directional control. It's useful from 100 yards and in - also a great punch out option.

Excellent review Andy. Why not have a chipper and a sand wedge in this style of club? Chipper for the short chips/bump and run type shots and the smart sole sand wedge for getting out of and over bunkers. It still leaves you with a standard pitching wedge and gap wedge for those distance shots, whereas these 2 clubs would cover you from about 70 yards in.

Stick it in the bag. I only have 13 clubs and have one ordered. Seems a no brainer for me. Rather than choke down a 9. I'm looking forward to getting it. The fact it looks like a premium Ping iron and not a lofted putter helps too.

Have been short chipping in house a lot this winter using Cleveland RTX6 46-58 wedges. I am good with the 46 and gets progressively worse down to the 58 which is poor compared to the 46. So many things often go wrong with the 58 compared to the 46. I also have a MacGregor MacTech X Chipper and it blows the wedges away. Much better directional and distance control compared to the wedges. The drawback with the MacTech X is that it has a sharp leading edge that snags into the carpet/grass. The RTX6 46 is much more for giving regarding snags because of its proper bounce. The Cleveland Smart sole Chipper seems to be the best of both worlds. I gladly trade away the 3W for a Chipper. A Chipper saves me more shots than the 3W.

I bought the Ping ChipR even though I am a pretty good chipper. My set was 44, 50, 54, and 58. Now it is 44, 50, 56 and ChipR. The 56 is my SW / LW. and I feel comfortable hitting over bunkers and out of rough with it. The ChipR is for around the greens and hitting bump and run shots with a lot of green to work with. I can still use my 50 for chipping too if I need a bit more loft. The reason it like the ChipR is because of the upright lie angle, shorter length and heavier weight. I think its made my bag more versatile.
@ronito886
@ronito886 2 жыл бұрын
So my first time out with the ChipR didn’t fare well. I was tempted to return it but decided to invest time into how to properly swing it. I’m glad I did. After two 1 hour sessions around a green (I live on a golf course), I think I’ve got the feel down now. If I have a lot of green to work with and I’m hitting from the fairway or tight lie I can usually roll the ball to within 5-6 feet and often tap in distance. It just takes time getting to know it. There are plenty of shots where I’ll use my 56 or 50 to pitch or chip but I think the ChipR will be a great weapon too.

Nice comparison Andy. I already have the Cleveland chipper and the Smart Sole really sets it apart from others I have tried. It is a very versatile club for sure. You can get the chipper to pop the ball up with some practice but still need a some good wedges in the bag IMO. One thing the chipper excels at is getting the ball to pop up from a dead pan lie - not something easily done with a wedge or a 7 iron either, to you point. I am looking to get some game improvement irons but plan to go from PW up and then get some new specialty wedges startling with a GW. After watching this review, I am definitely going to check out the Smart Sole wedges. Nice job as usual.

I’m absolutely with you the Ping ChipR. That upright lie angle just helps keep the shot on target more than a regular wedge or 9 iron. It’s far more versatile than we’d give it credit for and I’ve taken to using it from shallow bunkers. Would be interested in whether a higher lofted version would be better or not. Happy for now though.

I just got the ping chipr, reason i went for that over the cleveland is it can be used easier from 100 yards, in the vid you had the same initial impression as me, that the chipr woulnt be any good from range, but it is so good as long as you dont have obstacles, but i would use a sand wedge there anyway. of course its main use is round the green where in testing vs lob wedge, sand wedge, 8 iron bumps etc the chipr won in my tests by miles. I had a space in my bag so made sense. I play off 8.

I have been using a Wilson Harmonized chipper while playing different courses, using a half set of clubs. I have a 56 wedge, and a 7 iron for alternative clubs near the green. The chipper needs practice on each green to work out the roll out amount. Using your putter stroke and aim at the hole, you can get a green read and possibly one putt if you get the distance pin high. The other use I have found is for chipping back into play, but hitting the ball harder makes the shot go higher, so delofting if under trees is needed.

I replaced my 7 iron with a 7 hybrid and found this to be my go-to club for chipping around the green. The hybrid head easily glides through the turf and doesn't catch.
@ronito886
@ronito886 2 жыл бұрын
I have a 7 hybrid too. It works for chipping but not as easy as my ChipR due to its length and lighter weight. The advantage of the ChipR is you’re standing closer to the ball and it’s a lot heavier to control distance. The ChipR is awesome but I still use my 50 and 56 for hitting high pitch shots when needed.

I have a cheap chipper that I bought for $40 at Edwin Watts that works great. If you struggle chipping with a 7 or 8 iron like me, get yourself a cheap chipper and give it a whirl. You don't have to spend $200 for a stinking chipper. I'm getting pretty deadly with my $40 one. It's not for every shot around the greens, so learn to use the bounce on your wedges too.

You had said on another review that you'd not put the chipper in your bag because you didn't have the space. If you switched to all Cleveland Smart Sole Wedges (G,S,C) you could solve the problem. The sand wedge is 58 deg. It serves has a good sand wedge and can fit in for the seldom used lob wedge. I find the C wedge very versatile. I've used in for chip n run, approach and even out of the bunker. Finally, with the trio, you also get the gap wedge for those approach shots. Personally I don't care what other golfers say about my choice of clubs. It's the final score that counts.

Nice video and really interesting video as usual! Thanks! When I was young, maybe because of Seve Ballesteros, I was taught to use all irons to chip from 3-PW (the only real wedge was a sand-wedge a 56 degrees in those days). We used to do it depending on distance from the green with the putting stroke. The closer, the lower the loft, and as you got farther the higher the loft. I still do that. The chipper looks like a good all-around club, but your could do it using all irons being creative too. That worked with traditional lofts; don't know about power lofts. However, since speciality wedges appeared, I don't see much of the old-style of chipping anymore...

I had a really difficult time getting along with the Cleveland chipper, so I'm selling it and trying out an older used Ping maroon dot gap wedge, maroon dot for ping is bent 5 degrees upright which is pretty close to my putter lie angle, so it's an experiment. It feels really good hitting into my net at home, so time will tell. It's got the loft to pop it up and land it soft and if I lean the shaft I can take loft off of it if I want it to run.

I bought the smartsole set of three wedges ayear ago. The 50 and 58 wedges are great clubs that have cut strokes from my short game. But the smartsole chipper has a much shorter shaft and a much shallower face. These two characteristcs give me a lot of problems with the smartsole chipper such that I have now taken it out of my bag. You're right about learning the distances for the smartsole wedges, but once you have these numbers results become repeatable and reliable. I'll try the PING chipper because I appreciate the principle.

Thanks for your videos on these two clubs, have found this and other vids on chipping/approach really interesting. This discussion feels so much like when I use to play golf as a kid and did not have (could not afford) a heap of clubs. We use to use our 7 iron, our single wedge and putter for a whole range of different shops by manipulating loft. Golf has become almost too complicated by having too many different clubs. Having a ChipR and perfecting it for a whole range of different situations is almost preferable to having too many clubs of which you don't use often enough to get comfortable with. Less IS more. Thanks agains PS: you have a lot of dust specs all over your lens!!

If they ever allow a 15th club in the bag, it should have to be a chipper.

I tried the Cleveland smart sole Chipper, the CBX2 wedges in 54 and 58, and the smart sole S wedge. Neither of the products improved my game in the long term. I would imagine if you are a 25-30 handicap, these might improve your game, but if you are below a 15 index, the only thing that will improve your game is actually learning to use a 54 to 58 degree wedge. Especially if you play greens that stimp at 11 to 12. You need to learn how to manage and use spin because you can't hit a chipper from decent rough and stop it on a stimp11 green. If you are playing old-style muni courses with very slow and hairy green; flat greens that have front run-ups, I can see a chipper being of some value. For the average person, the best option is to get a sandwedge fitted for the type of turf you play and then learn to hit 3-4 different style shots with it. Once you get the confidence your scores will plummet. The biggest mistake I see is most golfers not using the bounce on their wedges, you need to be about to throw the bounce into the ground and have confidence, once you can do that, you can pull off amazing shots around the greens. The chippers are a bit of a crutch to learning how to really hit shots around the green and I think Andy knows that, this is why you won't ever put a chipper in the bag.

I think it all depends on what peoples goals are. If you’re trying to push your scores to be as best as possible (maybe consistently shooting in the 70s) then yes it’s a bit of a crutch. For someone like me who may get to play once a week (maybe) and wants to score in the 80s every time it’s a useful club. I don’t bleed any strokes around the green because if I’m nervous with a shot I know I can use the chipper to get on the green even if it isn’t the best possible shot. There’s a lot to be said for having a club that you KNOW will at least get you semi close.

@@willscarborough9089 i agree, if you don't care much about getting below 80 and just want an easy club to hit, it's a no brainer,, but if you are trying to get to a 5 hcp or lower, i think it's a crutch... At least from my experience using it.

@@pipebliss yeah I think if you want to be low single digits it’s better to use your wedges and hit multiple shots which opens up other spots in the bag. I hover between an 11-12 and I use one because if I’m having an off day or in crazy rough it’s just such an easy club to use effectively.

Don’t quite understand why you choose to compare a chipper and a wedge rather than two chippers. Reduced the info I was looking for as I am looking at chippers only. The Cleveland C grind already has more loft than the Ping . My 2 cents

For me the chipr as I tend to use a 7 iron a lot . Would of thought the chipr would not get the occasional blade in to the middle of the ball and it flies across the green like some wedge shots
