There are some striking similarities between the plot of 2002’s ‘It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie’ and 2011’s ‘The Muppets’, leading to some moments giving off a sense of Deja vu to say the least. This is a topic that I haven’t seen brought up elsewhere, so this should be an interesting watch for you all...

My theory is the events of The Muppets are Muppets canon that actually happened in universe and the Christmas one is the Muppets as actors making a TV special based on their own experiences.

The Great Muppet Caper and Muppets Most Wanted feel very similar to me.
@Musiclover19
@Musiclover19 3 жыл бұрын
That was sort of by design though. Like how Caper was a heist comedy follow up to the original Muppet movie, Most Wanted was also to be the same to the 2011 Muppets. One major difference is that Most Wanted works as an real sequel to the Muppets as it picks up right where the Muppets left off. Great Muppet Caper is really its own movie more so than a direct sequel to the Muppet Movie.
@juliezimmerman3476
@juliezimmerman3476 3 жыл бұрын
I have thought about too how The Muppets Most Wanted is the Modern Great Muppet Caper. That is a good observation about Originally the Great Muppet Caper being a follow up to The Muppet Movie, then The Muppets Most Wanted being the next generation follow up to The Muppets. Now there needs to be a third installment to the Muppets Franchise. Perhaps trying to get their show in Las Vegas, as they did in Manhattan .

One of these movies is a really smart representation of The Muppets and features some of the Muppet performers’ strongest performances. The other one was made by Jason Segel.
@stilljamming
@stilljamming 2 жыл бұрын
The reason for the similarity is that both of the movies are based on a concept, which was thought about since at least the 90s, when some fan outlets started writing about a few of the plot elements seen in the two of these. (From what I remember, that was a project meant to happen before Muppets from Space, or even Muppets in Space - the original script for the movie - took off.)

Very interesting comparison. I find it interesting how close these two films are. Although I'd consider the 2002 film more of an actual Muppet movie. 2011's film I felt could be titled 'Jason Segel & Amy Adams: featuring The Muppets' with the amount of unnecessary screen time the two are given. It's a shame that Muppets Most Wanted doesn't get the credit I believe it deserves.
@SomeBoiOnline
@SomeBoiOnline 3 жыл бұрын
I think that since general audiences likely weren't as familiar with the Muppets in 2011, the human characters are used as a means of reintroducing them. Once this is done, they seem to take a back seat near the end of the movie.
@BarrelBob
@BarrelBob 3 жыл бұрын
@@SomeBoiOnline True and to an extent I agree with that. But personally, I think there is still too much time given to the human characters even after we're re-introduced to The Muppets. The moment Kermit met up with Fozzie I believe should have been the human's cue to vacate the film. If anything, just send Walter off with The Muppets as the sole self-insert character for the audience. We are now on a journey with the Muppets, we don't need Amy Adams with a pointless musical number or Jason Segel tagging along while the Muppets look for networks. It just felt like Jason Segel in particular tried everything he could to be in the same scene as everyone else when he served no point in being there. At least someone like Ricky Gervais played a role moving the plot forward. I get he has a love for the franchise but again, it's called The Muppets. I care about them, not his character's internal conflict about being "a man or Muppet". But that is all just my opinion. Even Most Wanted commented that they spent a lot of time on the Walter plot instead of beloved Muppets

I just happened to stumble upon this channel and this video. I've actually been saying for a while that A Very Merry Muppet Christmas was practically a precursor to The Muppets 2011...although I don't know many people personally who care enough about this stuff as I do so no one's really been around to listen. Haha. I also think ..Muppet Christmas is quite underrated in terms of some of the humour used in it. Some of it is very odd and bleak, but I still remember enjoying it.

@nicksorenson940
@nicksorenson940 6 ай бұрын
With all the similarities I have to say that I found myself liking how the 2002 movie handled the premise better, even with it essentially being "It's a Wonderful Life" with Kermit. I've only seen the 2011 movie once and just remember it not sitting well with me when their premise was based around selling the idea that The Muppets had become these forgotten relics of pop culture that weren't relevant anymore, like Disney was just wanting to play on the nostalgia of the original Muppet Show more than play up the characters themselves as timeless icons. In the 2002 movie they're clearly still relevant and entertaining people before they run into their troubles of having to save the theater, which weren't because of it being left rundown and unused like in the 2011 movie. I also prefer the resolution of having the theater be made into a historical landmark over having the bad guy in the 2011 movie get hit in the head with a bowling ball to forget all about wanting to tear the theater down, which some would almost want to think of as lazy writing even if played for laughs. This is sure to be an even bigger hot take but as far as Muppet Christmas movies go I think the 2002 movie even feels more like a Muppets-centric movie with more of their traditional humor than Muppet Christmas Carol, not that I would ever try to suggest that it isn't a very good Christmas movie itself or a good adaptation of A Christmas Carol but for me it never feels as much like a "Muppets movie", IMO.
