These lenses create the perfect “vintage feel”. Even though you cannot reduce this feel to just one type of lens since there are countless other vintage lenses on the market, this seems to come very close to what most are after.

I think the flares are very much that vintage aesthetic! However you still get decent sharpness and contrast which is nice

I own and use the following Asahi Pentax Takumar lenses on my Pentax 35mm SLR film bodies and my digital mirrorless bodies: Asahi 28mm f/3.5 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar (49mm filter) Asahi 35mm f/3.5 Super Takumar (49mm filter) Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (8-element) (49mm filter) Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (7-element) (49mm filter) Asahi 105mm f/2.8 Super Takumar (49mm filter) Asahi 135mm f/3.5 Super Takumar (49mm filter) Asahi 200mm f/5.6 Super Takumar (49mm filter) Asahi 300mm f/6.3 preset Tele Takumar (58mm filter) Takumar are great lenses for a reasonable price. The 8-element 50mm and the 105mm are my personal favorites. The 7-element 50mm is radioactive.

Takumars are just special, they render color very well, they have that smooth blur that gives a refined look to an image, and they can do bokeh like there's no tomorrow. I don't know what kind of video work you do, but they can be great for interviews (stationary ones), I have great results with 55mm 1.8 on high fps, I tried it even for wedding HL got excellent results during photo sessions in nature, and in the evening at the wedding party on 100fps really nice looking footage.

For sure, they are old so hazing can easily occur, you can manage that in the post but better not to have that in the first place.@@YuvalAloni

Good to see a light been shone on Takumars. Bravo and thank you. But seriously all of the Takumar lenses offer a unique and artistic image. I wouldn’t know whether it is possible to create a set with the ‘same’ look (which is what Leica, FD and Contax lenses seem to avail). Anyone know if anyone has matched a set? As you suggest, however, the flare is significantly affected by the coating which changed through the various series of M42 Takumar. I have recently acquired several Takumars - nine to be precise - starting with a very early Takumar 1957, 55mm F2.2. I am looking forward to testing them. 🙏

@@YuvalAloni Very kind. It is actually timely as I got a little carried away at a recent liquidation auction of one of the best private camera museum collections in the Southern Hemisphere: its Leica collection was world renowned. While I didn’t venture into that league (apart from a Leica Mini Zoom compact…) I did get some interesting gear: several Pentax as mentioned; Olympus Pen F and 5 lenses; Olympus M1 and M1 lens (released prior to Leica forcing a name change to OM-1) some Zeiss M39 and M42 glass; some historically notable gear from Topcon, Bertram, Roleiflex; and a few dozen rangefinder, viewfinder, folder, SLR and early digital cameras from a multiplicity of manufacturers. Many of the camera models I had not been aware of previously. I had not been aware of some of the manufacturers either. I mean, am I the only person to not know ‘Okaya Optic’ released the ‘Lord SE’ in 1956; or that TAIYODO KOKI produced the ‘Beauty LM’; and the USA CAMERA CORPORATION produced the ‘PERFEX FIFTY-FIVE’; and that ‘Bertram’ produced a significant 6x9 Reporter camera?! So there is probably enough gear to produce a couple of hundred videos I reckon!

@@YuvalAloni Thanks Yuval, appreciated. It is timely as I actually recently acquired a LOT of film cameras (no video cameras though) via a liquidation of an amazing private museum collection. Even my tiny slice of it is still overwhelming. The cameras are 1950s to 1990s from about 20 different manufacturers; mainly rangefinders and SLR, with a few folders and a couple of TLRs. Some of the manufacturers I hadn’t heard of before, like Topcor, which as I learned was a SLR leader in its day, briefly ahead of Nikon etc. I think I probably have enough kit to make a few hundred videos! 🤣
