It really is strange to see genuinely great visual novels get blacklisted from steam but games like "Sex with Hitler" and all sorts of other junk gets greenlit. Their inconsistency with banning certain games IE: banning Meteor World Actor and not banning Meteor World Actor: Badge & Dagger is also very annoying. Either both of them are okay or neither of them are. Oh and lest I forget the asset rip/shovelware hentai puzzle "games" being allowed on steam.

yeah. i think it's because they should apply to the usa first and only usa.. and then branch out in to other places. other countries and regions do not have protections that the usa has.

Agreed. Though a guy told me that Valve doesn't want a game that might get them in trouble for having Loli/Shota, even if the game in question doesn't have a Loli/Shota in a five ft radius.

we really should have more gaming platforms to buy games from, those 3D realistic looking r18 games look so disgusting yet an animated fictitious title which is literally fantasy gets banned. have the steam moderators forgotten to not mix games with reality? visual novels are literally like books, you don't ban books because it's raunchier or gorier than others

Muramasa being banned is the real conundrum of this whole thing. Whilst I can’t get a 80+ hour VN that delves into morality, the meaning of justice, revenge and war, I can buy an RPG where an abused, drug addicted man sends his allies to play Russian roulette, or one where most enemies are hanging dong, and being afflicted with BUTT BLEEDING is a real mechanic… I mean, all 3 are peak fiction but come on Valve!

ikr, exactly what i'm so mad about too, we see this 3D realistic looking teen sex with frat parties, occult crap and obviously nazi shit but games that take on great story telling, world building and awesome characters with sex being plot points or result of slow blooming romances banned from the platform.

the irony is that many of the few visual novels erroneously banned by Steam are viable for Switch ports, especially Muramasa and Meteor World Actor. Amatsutsumi also has a PS Vita port in Japan. Alongside the likes of the Dungeon Travelers series, these companies need to bring their stuff to the platform in English in order to make up for the loss of exposure on Steam. Heck, the dev for The Curse of Kudan - another title that got banned - has already realised this and now that's coming to the Switch in December.

You can play Saya no Uta on Steam, which is literally a romance between a schizophrenic individual with an underaged girl who is also a piece of meat that consumes human flesh, but a game about a samurai with a cursed sword? Banned. A ; game while Steam already has most of the games from the franchise? Banned. Makes no sense

The fact that there are multiple games on steam in which you can have sex with h i t l e r while other vns that are leagues more tame are banned over a girl being a few inches below the average height makes me wanna pass away

A word of warning about meteor world actor: The writer of that VN is notorious for leaving stories unfinished. The VN is still good, just don't expect a significant conclusion and everything tied up in a neat little bow.

Muramasa, Amatsutsumi and Evenicle 2 are also available on GOG. I got the first two there as I prefer to have a client that can manage the game as well as cloud saves. I also got Chaos Head there just to support them because they accepted it when Steam initially banned it.

I still remember being part of the Chaos Head Noah protest. I remember seeing the news of it not being approved a few days later, during the weekend, and quickly found on reddit fans were teaming up to send (not spam) mails to every important staff member on Steam, specially the ones involved in sales management. And then on Sunday night, we all send our mails, ensuring they would be the first thing this people saw on their mails. We were like 2000 fans, but just imagine seeing a fraction of that, lets say 200 mails all about the same protest, from verified mails (most linked to a valid steam account), it sure caught their attention because by wednesday we got news that the game was re-evaluated and approved. Such a lovely moment, but what you said its true, it was just a won battle in a lost war.

Kinda funny how I got sick and then to entertain myself with something I bought Chaos;Head Noah just yesterday. I didn't expect to enjoy it that much, but was pleasantly surprised, I really really like it. And then this video got recommended to me! I guess if I wanted to try it earlier I wouldn't find it on steam lol. Great video btw, will definitely try Muramasa later.

I'm so sad Muramasa didn't release on Steam. :( It's an amazing vn that deserves more attention. Also missing out on those Steam muramasa emotes and backgrounds sucks. Great video!

Steam review process is weird. Hello Goodbye was banned then unbanned. Clover Days was banned then Hikari Field submitted it instead of NekoNyan and it was approved. How does Meteor World Actor get banned but not the fandisc with near identical content?

It is kind of a sequel, I only say fandisc half-heartedly due to its plot progression and the fact the now dead gacha was also kind of a sequel/spinoff/fandisc sort of thing.

Hopefully Shiravune will get Kara no Shoujo II & specially III onto steam, being there means more money for future projects of TL houses. Also read a comment that went: “yeah it’ll probably make it, apparently Kara no Shoujo II is banned there but who says The Shell is” lmao.

Don't forget that Bokuten got temporarily banned when it was on the store for like a year because of some hidden files. It took like half a year for it to be on sale again

Some of these scenarios can and should just lead you to assume that they're understaffed. I sometimes wonder why they can't just have a select group of staff that have no other role than VN approvals. Critique: Rather than completely blacklisting games/18+ content you should just put the 18+ content behind paywalls. A prime example I'm referencing is "Making Lovers" (No 18+ content despite the characters/scenarios).

I still don't get why Rance is banned, but Evenicle (the game from the same devs with the similar type of content) is not. Rance is one of the most important, if not THE most important HRPG series, with the final entry, Rance X, being on top of VNDB ratings.

Another negative is that most visual novels will stay in english-only, the Steam market has added incentives for developers to invest in translations to more languages :(

Steam is just not where I'm going for this kinda content. It's unreliable at best and actively hostile and/or xenophobic at worst. I'm just not one of those people that needs EVERY game I play to be tied to Steam, so with games of this nature, I often feel it better to go directly to the publisher or developer when I can.

Pretty sure Evenicle 2 being banned is more on alicesoft, being new to how to get VNs on steam. If it was mangagamer publishing it, I'm sure they wouldve gotten it on steam.

It's a shame for Muramasa indeed - but it still can be purchased on GOG (at least in Europe), so it's not completely unavailable when one hears about it. Couldn't care less about the Ecchi titles though

I think the only way for us to save these game is doing what sciADV fans do = show steam how much we want to buy the game. I mean it works for chaos head it's definitely going to work out the same for the others right............. Right?

Even Saya no Uta was approved. And most games with loli characters are allowed on their platform (as long as they have merit of course). They even have Evenicle II!
