The Airgun Show - the best bait for squirrel hunting, PLUS the Brocock Compatto Sniper HR on test…

What’s the best bait for grey squirrel feeding stations? Peanuts have awesome attraction but corn is just a third of the price. Mat Manning sets up two feeders and heads out with his FX Impact MkII to find out what the bushy-tails like best.
We’ve for the Brocock Compatto Sniper HR on the test bench this week. The original Compatto was a great semi-bullpup but the new one boasts a high-quality Huma regulator. Tune in to see how the latest model shapes up.

Excellent video Mat. I agree, peanuts are the best choice. I made a feeder about twice the height of yours and added a slope inside to keep them dispensing. I also added a small pocket in the back which filled with peanuts when loading the hopper. This meant when they'd emptied and I was unable to get up to refill, the little pocket of peanuts which weren't dispensed kept then returning and kept their interest peaked until I could get there to refill.

Now that was a good show. However, even though they apparently like peanuts better than the corn, they would still have come to the corn when peanuts were not available. So you can still shoot a lot of squirrels with the corn. And the corn is 3 times cheaper, so..... Anyway, I never imagined I would like a British Hunting show like I like yours. Keep up the good work.
@theshootingshow
@theshootingshow 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You are right, they would have come to the corn if there was no other food available. Unfortunately, these woods are full of ripening beech mast and acorns, and corn doesn't usually have enough pull to draw them away from these natural food sources until the availability diminishes later in the year. All the best. Mat

Greetings from the USA. Fine shooting Mat. Keep hammering those greys. On this side of the Atlantic, I've been doing my duty as well. I use peanuts and peanut butter. And you may be interested to know, the drawing power of peanut butter far exceeds the peanuts. The bushies go for the peanut butter nearly every time.

Like many guns, the brocock’s pressure gauge isn’t visible unless your face is at a reasonably narrow angle to the muzzle. Why isn’t this seen as a problem?

As always great video Matt, I haven't done any shooting with an air rifle for many, many years it has been full bore out to 1000 yards but recently I have wanted to go back to my roots and how I got into shooting as a kid, albeit now a pcp and squirrels seem to be a large problem down this was maybe its because a local estate wants to clear out the greys and put the reds back. Today I put up my first feeder with peanuts what I wanted to know was how often do you go back to the same feeder to shoot? Can you shoot it once a week or would that be to often? Thanks for some great viewing it has helped with my research greatly👍

For it to be a good test you should of ground some peanuts to go in one feeder. Then made some peanut sized balls out of corn etc for the other feeder! Squirrels like something they can hold & munch on. Corn etc doesn't fit this bill. Worth a try for part 2?

Another nice wee video Mat, and the Compatto's a sweet-looking rifle which quite appeals to me. Is the safety resettable? Nice that it seems pretty quiet too. Only hiccup with the BASC insurance is it doesn't cover you once you start Professional Pest Control (i.e. get paid for your services), but otherwise it's great for most shooters. Cheers. Russ

He specifically said he was waiting to see which feeder they would select to eat from first. It's also quite helpful to let the squirrels get some food and get into a predictable feeding pattern before shooting to afford you a clean shot opportunity and quick kill. Patience is the key; the squirrels are much too jumpy and fidgety for clean shots otherwise.
