Didn't care anything about "CATS" ... except the song "MEMORY" ... then reluctantly I went to see the show ... I was mesmerized! (being mesmerized doesn't mean that I liked it ... I get mesmerized looking at a car wreck too ... lol! ... but, I did like the music coming from the orchestra 🤗)

@@littlesongbird1 I confess to being bored with the show and ONLY liked "Memory". So not the slightest inclination to see it again, unlike say Les Miserables or Billy Elliot.

I auditioned for Schoenfield in the 70's, I think, as a back up singer. He was considering producing Radio 40's Hour. I had, also, co-written a showstopper song for the latter. The drag queens took a liking to it.

I love how the movie Cats bombed and everyone made fun of it and then Andy Webbs said "Yeah guys, I agree, how dare they do such a bad job making a movie out of my PERFECT musical!" like, the movie isn't the problem, it's your big fat honking trashfire of a musical, Andy!

Oh, even people who love the musical hate the movie. It's easy to blame the source material when you hate it anyway, but the movie bombing was mostly the result of the staggering amount of poor creative decisions the filmmakers made all on their own. "Cats" can be a tricky musical to adapt to film anyway (regardless of whether you like it or not) but, that doesn't result in all of the weird choices they made. Particularly in terms of some of the musical numbers. (Though, honestly, how anyone could even hear the phrase "digital fur" and not burst out laughing is just beyond me 🤣).

@@SwiftFoxProductions What is this, a nuanced opinion on the internet? Yeah, I have to agree. I absolutely love Cats, I've seen the 1998 version a few too many times, plus I've listened to some other productions, and I am not a fan of the 2019 film whatsoever. It was a weird choice to change the aesthetic so much when the musical is so recognisable, and like you said, some of the decisions with the music didn't turn out so well either

That is very Andrew Lloyd Webber though. When something is successful (like Cats was as a stage musical) then he’ll take a lot of the credit for it, but if something gets universally panned (like Cats the movie) he’s quick to blame someone else for it’s shortcomings. Another big example of this was when Patti LuPone was the lead in the London production of Sunset Boulevard, and was promised to be in the Broadway production, but because her performance in particular was getting negative reviews, Andrew went in to cast Glenn Close instead, who played the role in the Los Angeles production and got glowing reviews. When Patti heard the news, Andrew kept trying to say it wasn’t his decision, and kept trying to put the blame on others for it, when was really was his fault.
