Thanks for the video, Justin. It was really good to see the outliner in action. I'm a woodworker/furniture designer and I've been messing around with the outliner quite a bit in an effort to save time and stay organized. I was wondering if you may be able to cover the difference between components and groups a little bit more in-depth for drawing sake but ALSO organization sake. In fact, almost more for the organization sake. For example, let's say I have identical components (or subcomponents that make up a larger "over-arching" component) that I would like for changes to occur to each when I make a change to one, and they occur in a symmetrical fashion. Meaning they oppose each other in opposite components of the project such as a corner on a front and back panel, or right and left panel. That way I could pull the entire panel away from the project and keep all the components together in order to expose other parts of the project. Any thoughts or ideas? Anyone else have any input or a source I could go to for some insight? Thanks

Thanks Justin. I've used outliner extensively since you started promoting it way back, and it really is a powerful tool. It has several downsides. For complex models it slows down SketchUp so much I have to turn it off. Secondly, Trimble prefixed "instances" in the group or component name in "outline". IMHO, "instances" should follow the name or at least be optional in the "outliner" window

This is a good point, though it's worth noting that this seems to happen less when your objects in the outliner are grouped and collapsed. Unfortunately I forget to mention in this video, but it's VERY important if you're using an extension or creating a lot of new groups/components to minimize the outliner first. Thanks for this comment!

Am I to understand that you do not use layers in your work. Thank you so much for all of your videos.

WhuUUus'up Justin! I'm a 20+ year user of Maya so the Outliner is always a welcome feature. It's similar in many ways but I've a small ish.. Q1 :: @12:40 In your reorg example, you drag-selected a group and moved it to another group, you got a placement indicator as to where it will drop... I'm not getting that with my machine. Is there a pref for this? Using Win10 btw. Q2 :: Is it possible to drag a group out of a group and onto the root layer -as its own group? My attempts simply drops the group into another random group located in the root, but it won't stick to the root layer like I see in other apps (i.e. Maya Outliner, Photoshop layers, Windows File Explorer, etc..). Awesome channel!

Thanks for the great tutorial! Watching I was wondering why there is no easy way to edit an object that is part of a group. Like you said, you either have to double-click your way through your groups and the referring sub-groups or access them via the outliner. But why there is no way to e.g. cmd-click on the particular object and edit it right away?

It would be helpful to see the outliner applied in a real-life situation (within a real model) rather than just random shapes which aren't likely to ever show up in any model I make. I can't really get a sense of its power as a tool since copying and grouping and ungrouping cylinders isn't big on my to-do list.

I knew the Outliner was either a treasure chest or a pandora's box, only looking at it a few times in five years. I'm a slow learner, maximum three things at a time. Sketchup, the program continues it's legacy of appearing simple, but being capable of almost anything. Since Gates, there has been a communications disconnect between the programmers and the users wherein the programmers 'interpret' the business and needs of the user as best they can, but are never able to think like a carpenter, or develop an algorithm that follows a contractors' logistical sequence, because buildings aren't cube farms. The best attempts are simply new interfaces (GUI's) for linking data to objects in an attempt to be 'intuitive'. AutoCad and Chief Architect and most others are all worthy of awards, but none have the intuitive interface and interaction of Sketchup. Same to Justin and Bonnie (common sense sounding board) for showing us how to extract the best stuff.

Actually Deon both are correct (it has nothing to do with being polite - and I'm also from Africa!). It depends on the context and what follows. The way to test this is to take the Bonnie out of the sentence and see what you'd say for the "me" part. If the sentence was "Bonnie and me walking," then me is correct. (You wouldn't say I walking......) If the sentence was " Bonnie and I look good" then the I is correct as you wouldn't say "me look good".

There is a large overlap. SketchUp is attractive to gamers because of its simplicity compared to engineering CAD programs. After all, perfect spheres/ circles/ cylinders (polar coordinates) that might be important in drawing say car crankshafts etc, are not necessary in such detail to gamers. I'm ehoping for a sequel to SketchUp, that creates fully rendered and automated compositions using just proxies that would be very attractive for architectural pitches, and the byproduct attractive to interior decorators and gamers.
