There's an old saying from MR2 owners. "Brake in a straight line or die" It holds true. Also, if you are running factory brake master/calipers, I'd recommend putting a Bias valve/limiter valve on the front brake circuit to stop the front brakes locking too early. That mod took about 2/3 seconds off my khana times on a 70 second course, one of the best mods I ever did.

Good idea, though some places dont allow brake bias adjustment in street class. Something to think about if Woody ever wants to go into actual sprints. Wait until he has lift off oversteer...now that shit bites you!

Just like the old Porsche 930 "Widowmaker" - brake, start to turn in, then accelerate _all the way_ through the corner. Even feathering the throttle as you turn can make the back want to come around if the track is the slightest bit damp.

Legotruck82 what did you use for the bias valve? I need to do mine as my front brakes are locking up too early too

@@adriangale Tilton Lever type Bias valve. I THINK the factory proportioning valve was gutted too but it has been almost 10 years since it was done. It requires a new hardline. I think all up it was around $150AUD for the valve and about the same in labor to get the new line run and a bracket made up (it just sits in the Frunk)
@Legotruck82
@Legotruck82 4 жыл бұрын
@@adriangale Also, be VERY careful when dialling this in. One click on the lever type made a HUGE difference to brake performance. If you go too far it can lock the rears first, and have very little braking from the front. Test in a safe environment, away from obstacles, sideroads and traffic. Hope this helps

Glad you’re having fun in the a-dub! I’ve autocrossed an aw11 for years. Plenty of spins! That isn’t the snap oversteer that’s referred to, just oversteer from weight transfer and lack of grip. Snap oversteer happens when you lift/brake midway through a fast turn. It happens a lot quicker than that.

I can confirm it happens extremely quick, happened in my sw20. I would think a driver whom is very familiar with the MR2 could correct it. MR2's are such rewarding cars to drive once you get some seat time.
@adriangale
@adriangale 4 жыл бұрын
gt4thomas yeah I’ve spun out lots of times like this guy did whilst autocrossing. It can happen fairly fast and be hard to manage like he experienced, as the aw11 is short wheelbase with weight behind you. But it’s still progressive. Usually happens in a side to side transition done too quickly or aggressively. I’ve only had the snap oversteer happen once that I remember. Autocrossing, I entered a turn through some cones too fast and lifted. Split second reaction from car to snap oversteer. Gave me a good scare because I was suddenly pointed at a concrete wall. I had time to recover and not crash but there was no way I could have reacted to the oversteer event.

I remember my first day on the track, and ever subsequent start where my nerves were so crazy, my stomach had butterflies and before you know it, your flying around focused on nothing but the car and the corner. So good to see the snap oversteer play out in the very first run. Didnt know you could go to any track with a short sleeve and a go pro on your helmet, normally a big no no for most track days. Anyone else notice the front left brakes on that Civic sparking up?... All in all, super awesome stuff. Would like to catch you on track sometime.

Hey Woody, Next on the To Do list: *LSD. *15 or 16 inch wheels that fit inside the fenders (never choose form over function). When your tires hit the fenders, you create an infinitely high spring rate causing an unbalance in ride and loss of grip. *Sticky tire compound. *Suspension bushings, sway bars, adjustable coilovers. *Ease up on steering inputs. *Hit all the apexes. *Reduce wheel spin at the start. Burn outs mean loss of forward momentum. *Look at the wheel/tire/suspension setup on that Turbo Civic and learn. *Last but not least, listen to Al! Lol.

hello skid factory, first of all i enjoy very much your show and also the amazing mechanics you both are, even if al is more experienced tihs message is more from you woddy to improve your driving and performance while driving 1st- you fix your seating position always before any race, you dont change it on the racing line and you enter the race confident on how you are sitted and how the wheel is turning 2nd- one of your problems on counter steering it is velocity, thats has to do on the way you take the steering wheel, when you are already confident on the lenght of your legs, when you start moving the wheel to feel confortable on a 90 degre and 270 degre position hand or a 90 angle to each side, just where the middle parts are, and figure a parte where your hands feel grip to the steering wheel, then you try to steer to one side and then to the other without releasing the steeering input, remember to leave a little "V" shape in your elbow in a straigh line and then when you turn complete the wheel whitout releasing, stretching your complete arm 3rd. you need more steering input ( not letting it so much go except is a big oversteer, correcting point 2 will help alot) and speed on the counter steering, try to search for the point you are inducing the start of oversteer and maintain it using counter steering techniques, not correcting an oversteeiring ( you loose time, and alot) - also throttle input, you are on a ON - OFF switch, leeting too much time on the OFF part and too much on the FULL ON part, need to play with it more in the middle so you can control more oversteering and counter oversteering instead of being a passenger ( on MR cars the amount of thottle is very important on mid corners) 4th- your car suffer from 3 things for what i could gather watching you, and watching the racing line of the civic, understeering - oversteering and snapoverstering understering - oversteering : - there is a combination of many mechanical things, your ride heigh was too low, you need at least an inch, thats why it rubb somuch much especially in ths type of circuit, not because of the sharp edge you left, basicly you need more wheel travel for more steering input and throttle input -also i didnt see not hear your tyre pressure, thats the most important thing in the track where you loose or win time, dont remember the type of tire but for the wheel you have ( 15 i think or 14) you need a max of 30 hot on each side, and thats very inflaited, you typically run around 26 -28 psi hot, if you put everything at 30 psi cold and run out, you will end up on about 32 to 33 psi front and 33 to 35 psi back, you need to balance that out on the time the tyre is already hot, so it is the first thing you do or have someone to do when you enter the pit lane ( write them down per lap and compare) -dampening is one of my concerns, dont know if your suspension has damping adjusment ( stiff or soft on street slang)) if thats the case remember you have some more way in the back, less say 5 click on the front and 6 in the back, same with spring rate this is one of the biggest issue on the MR plataform that many times induce very hard snap oversteering and many people doesnt why doesnt his car doesnt turn like the others - snap oversteering, comes with the experience on the MR layout and fixing all already explain on the back-later on you will only induce it when you reach the maximum contact patch capacity in your wheel, and you need more experience to do that with your amazing current setup ( for starters on the track it is the best NA combo instead of any honda inside) it was very good and motivating to see the complete build from the beginning and being enjoyed at the track, amazing build, hope at the end that you decide go more serious on the racing with this platform more than just daily, it is a pretty good one and hope some day too see al in a track :O ps: you did in the circuit around 15 laps and of seat time? if thats the case, thats a very good improvement and should persue it

Hey Woody , it's great to see you tracking the car . A couple of pointers from a Lakeside driver . Not a good idea to apply the hand brake after a run on the track , the hot pads tend to "bake" on to the rotors , when they should be cooling off , as far away as possible from the hot rotors. Once you sort the dragging tyres , bring it out for an Open sprint on the main circuit at Lakeside , you'll love it ! You'll only need 3,4 & 5th gears on the main track. ( hitting about 180kmph through the Kink is a real "pucker" experience) Need to ensure you have some track day brake pads and 600 degree racing brake fluid on board , together with correctly inflated , semi slick tyres , you'll be amazed at the G forces generated. ( start your semi slicks at about 24PSI , they should get up to about 30 - 32 PSI once they're warmed up ) . Great video !!

Sometimes too wide a tyre can be a disadvantage. It's all about the weight on the tyre's contact patch. The smaller the contact patch the more weight on it, which heats the tyre quicker. Also, the roll oversteer you're experiencing could be lessened by a stiffer front sway bar. The outside front wheel tucks,which allows the rear end to swing around. A friend transformed the handling of his wife's VW Beetle from an oversteering pig to a great handler by putting a second sway bar on it. A strange comparison, I know, but they're both tail heavy cars, It also kept the inside rear tyre on the ground, reducing wheel spin & making it act like it had a slippery diff. The car was run in the state hillclimb championships here in NSW, quite successfully, too. It ran in 2E club car, whats now improved production, 1601-2000 cc's. It was run on a 195/60x14 tyre, which would be the equivalent of a 205/50x15. Keep at it, you were 3 seconds slower than the fastest time on your first go. Sounds a lot, but just count 3 seconds to your self, & it isn't that much slower. Motor sport is such bullshit that way, people make such a big thing out of such a little difference. I got my MR2 shirt yesterday, maybe you should do a second version with you wearing a helmet & an orange cone stuck under the front.

Great video, awesome to see the build to use of the car. Small piece of advice, not sure how the handbrake is set up on the car, but if it activates you're normal rear brake pads, don't use the handbrake when you come of the track. Let the brakes cool first or you can end up with heat damage to the disc and pads. I know that its at the high end of the sport, but watch the V8 super cars when they came in from practice, they go strait up on the jack and the team will hand rotate the wheels to stop disc/pad damage.

Looks like the best way to drive it is to always brake in a straight line and get into the corners on the throttle. The snap oversteer seems to happen mostly when you're not pressing any of the pedals.

Going well Woody young man, car sounds great, don’t forget that if a tyre is rubbing it will effectively be braking on that side, that is the side the majority of the weight is on at that time and can surely only add to the oversteer characteristic off throttle. Love to see it getting used as it should be 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Good on you Woody. This is a great way to become a much better driver and not a statistic. I thought I was a good driver until I started sprint racing. A first corner spin shrank my head a bit and over the next few years I learned a lot in a safe environment. More young guys should follow your lead. :)

Love it! You can learn to control the rear pendulum effect and predict it. As you found out there is a smaller window in drift than a front engine car. But sideways is not fastest, it will repay you the smoother you are with the control. Read any guide on how to track drive a mid engine car and it applies really well to the mr2. Great to see it being used for fun. You got loads of seat time too, looked like a great day out.

Woody you looked like you had a great time. Now, find yourself an experienced track driver to give you some instruction so you actually go fast. What you found weren't the limits of the car, but your limits... and those are currently fairly low. First thing to tighten is always the loose nut behind the wheel. Oh, and DON'T set the handbrake after a run... great way to warp rotors.
@JeffReeves
@JeffReeves 4 жыл бұрын
Yep. Holding all that heat on the rotors from those hot pads isn't good. Also, the cables on the handbrake have a tendency to snap after 30 years of wear and tear. Put it in a low gear, and angle wheels if on an incline.
@young11984

Bill Johnson mine didn’t warp they exploded, scared the hell out of everybody around me. With on .02 seconds after rotor pieces hit the ground somebody yelled...DONT USE THE PARK BRAKE NEXT TIME...Couldn’t help but laugh as I got in the truck to go to the parts store.

Harsh but true. But the main thing is he had a good time and saw some improvement over the day. Hell of a lot more in the car. Never seen such a tail-happy AW11. Slow in fast out bro. Good thing about these cars is they teach you so much about weight transferal. 1. Brake hard, shift the weight over the front wheels 2. turn in find the apex 3. spot the exit and back to WOT.

im thinking the run with your step was the cleanest....general rule of thumb if there squealing your loosing speed or sometimes slower is faster as for only going int 2nd its hard to use engine brakeing in first gear but if ya pop it into 3rd without any throttle the drag will assist braking and a quick drop back into 2nd just before you apply the power sgould do you well in those short twisty circuts thanks for the video

Perfect car for a little track like that, lightweight, just enough power and agile. On the "snap oversteer" issue a lot of people complain about, I find it tends to be people who aren't that used to mid or rear engined cars. Most of your weight is at the rear, especially on the MR2, which is very different to front engined cars that tend to be 50/50 at most. I find keeping some load on the rear tyres helps a lot, it happens mainly on lift off, so the rears keep grip and the heavy engine doesn't swing around
@feral4mr2

Snap oversteer is a myth.
@PiDsPagePrototypes
@PiDsPagePrototypes 4 жыл бұрын
Stretched tyres loose grip earlier and sharper then correctly sized radials - the sidewall is meant to be able to move to keep the contact patch flat on the road. When stretched already, it just lifts the trailing side (which changes depending on corner direction) early reducing grip. Fitting correctly sized tyres and softening the rear end weight transfer control bar (commonly miss labelled as sway or anti-roll bar) will contol the weight transfer known as 'snap oversteer'.
