In today's video I do something a bit special, I go over the past, present and future of the Buller river! New Zealand's and in fact one of the worlds most fierce rivers. I share the tales of its past and what the future might hold for this monstrous sleeping giant of a river that flows through near the banks of Westport. From holding billions of dollars in gold to having some of the largest floods ever recorded its a truly special place!
I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

Awesome informative piece you've put together!! The Buller is a very powerful river that's for sure. My great Uncle Jack Porter died in it at age 19 in 1948. We were also in town for a funeral and got stuck in Westport during the July 2021 flooding too...I thought this was the worst "one in 100 year" (they seem to use this term way to loosely) weather events I'd experience in my life but being from Hawkes Bay we've also just been through some devastating and life changing flooding here. Water is a very powerful force! Keep up with the great videos guys :)

Thanks so much! It is yeah, I’m sorry to hear that but yeah really shows it’s not to be messed with. Yeah ahaha, will it’s been about 100 years since the last one for there about’s, I think there will unfortunately be a lot more big floods to come not just in the Buller but all over. It is a very powerful force and not to be messed with, it’s what shapes and controls our planet. Thanks heaps for watching and glad you enjoyed :)!

the highest possible flow rate (in full flood) in one of the largest rivers in europe, the Rhine is estimated around17.500 Cubic M and therefore comparable to the Buller. That is truly impressive!

Ahaha I remember looking that up too when you were over here! Very comparable in full on flood yeah it’s amazing how much rivers with smaller cachements can flood! Thanks for watching

Have you got a source for the >1,000 mm of rainfall in a day event? The NIWA website says the peak 24 hour rainfall in NZ is 869 mm (from Cropp at Waterfall, Hokitikia catchment) which is of course still extreamly impressive.

Huge thanks for that! What you made was completely unexpected from a channel of your size; I really enjoy your normal videos, but with this I am sure I have again stumbled onto a creator when their channel was pre-parabolic. Don't limit your subject matter, your biggest edge is in communication in this medium.

Thanks for the great production! We travel the route of the Buller River as far as Inangahua several times a year and Rotoiti is our stopping place for a break and a cuppa on our way to Greymouth. Went to Karamea for the first time 2 weeks ago on a spectacular day, truly a day to remember, as well as being our 40th Wedding anniversary. Will make our next trip down in 2 weeks time from North Auckland that much more interesting as we cross the bridges of the rivers you have mentioned. The West Coast of the South Island of N Z. One of the truly best places in the World!

Thanks for the well put together video and history tutorial on the Buller River. I live not to far away from the Mohaka River and from what I have seen there of the share volume and height in cyclone Gabriel quite astonishing it is easy to imagine what would happen with the Buller. The power of water!

You’d think with stats like that our council and government would want to help save the region. But we’re yet to see any flood protection. It’s like they want the town to flood instead.
@TheSluicers
@TheSluicers Жыл бұрын
Yeah your totally right, it’s ludicrous. Like they could do just about anything else to try and fix it but no, heck they dredge out the river bed to increase area for water to flow, get the prospectors in there 😂. Fingers crossed they got onto their crap soon

I live in Westport, about a K from the river. When we had the flood I could feel the floor trembling in my house and hear the scariest rumbling. Animals were freaking out...as the locals say - she's a big bitch when she gets outa bed . .
