"The Boy with the Thorn in His Side" is taken from The Smiths' third album The Queen Is Dead but was released as a single (albeit in a different mix) several months before, reaching no. 23 in the UK Singles Chart in autumn 1985. This was the first single by The Smiths to be accompanied by a promotional video, something the band had previously resisted. The Smiths also performed this song on an episode of the British television programme Top of the Pops.

When all these so called lads were going out pulling. Stephen Morrissey was reading Keats, Yates, Wordsworth and Wilde to name but a few. I was the same. I'm an overweight balding postman but have had more than my fair share of fun with the ladies. Albert Einstein is one of my heroes not because he split the atom or came up with the theory of relativity. Because he had sex with Marilyn Monroe. Gave me faith 😅

The most addictive part of listening to The Smiths is the insane balance they have of making music that comes off as optimistic yet haunting at the same time. I love how the songs usually end with Marr playing out the melody. I’m notorious for just rewinding back to hear those last few seconds again and again

I agree re: Johnny's melodies are always so bright, but Morrissey's lyrics are usually depressing. Damn, I had LOVED this band when I had been a teenager! They were part of the group of bands I had been introduced to in high school that had changed my life. The kicker had been in 8th grade when I had seen the video for, Spellbound by Siouxsie and the Banshees. But, the first time I had heard the Cure's song Boys Don't Cry, while carpooling my freshman year, it had really grabbed me and wouldn't let me go! Then, How Soon is Now had happened. Then, Bela Legosi's Dead by Bauhaus. And, finally, the first Sister's of Mercy album. That was my band line-up in high school!

There is something so powerful about getting into these songs when you are 15-17, as I did. That period where everything feels like higher than high, lower than low. Where you love so openly and blindly for the first time.

I was in my teens in 1986 and had a lot of problems in my school. Some larger guys were bullying me as I were often misgendered by adults, who thought I was a girl due to my blond hair, face and slim body. It was so humiliating and it has haunted me ever since. As a kid I was so joyfull and allways smiling but that periode of my life changed me permanently and I never smile anymore. This music was what made want to keep living.

I bought The Queen is dead back in 94. I was preparing for applying the university and barely had the money, but bought it anyway. I had to walk 2 districts: almost 40 blocks, to reach a friend and borrow my ticket back home, cause i lived outside the city. the whole time i was listening (it was a cassette) in a cheap yellow walkman, i was 17. Those songs were printed in my heart forever.

Hatful of Hollow was one of the cassette albums playing in my white Walkman in summer 1985. I got a lot of use out of it for the rest of the decade,and still used it occasionally right up to at least 2000.

Tinha 14 anos, era uma madrugada de 1999, sem sono, pensando na vida e na morte: questões típicas da adolescência. Estava assistindo a MTV, sinal UHF, pegando super mal, eis que me surge um clipe (o outro) dessa música. Foi literalmente amor a primeira vista e desde então essa banda foi a trilha sonora da minha vida: escutei adolescente, chorando pelo primeiro amor, quando fui aprovado na faculdade, quando terminei com a minha primeira namorada, quando terminei com a segunda namorada, quando a gente voltou e quando, finalmente, casei-me com ela. When I was about 10 or 11 my dad would play The Smiths, among other great artists, to my brother and I, and this song was the song we would hear the most, I knew every word I'd say.. It was horrible at the time.. But now 6-7 years on, i fucking love The Smiths, and this song always sticks out to me!! Thanks Dad..

A fun fact... When the smiths were invited to the TOTP for the first time, the producers told them that they would go playback and Morrissey refused to do it. Then he decided to go out with the stupid mic and make the whole flowers and dances thing as a act of opposition against this kind of annoying habit of shows to ask musicians to lip sync and pretend playing.

A lot of British music themed tv shows both in BBC and in ITV were always like this since, 1950s. Because they rather promote and sell the track to make it higher in,the market. Than to actually make the musicians/performers famous because, they already are.!! As you can see if you watch other TOTP and RSG! episodes they always play the album track (original version) because this shows like this, are for UK ROCK AND POP CHARTS purpose only. ....That's why there's always an assigned "chart organizers" and disc jockeys in the show for some kind of, "marketing competition". I personally think the producers of top of the pops and ready steady go! did the right thing in, playback and lip sync promotion
