The E36 BMW M3 is strong in the bang-for-your-buck category these days, and Brian's budget build is fast and planted for under $10,000 total into the car.
Check out Brian's WheelWell page to learn more about this bad E36!

I do a lot of track days in Southern California so reach out to me on my wheel well page and I'd be more than happy to take anyone out for a session. I love cars and hope we can promote our enthusiasm to the next generation!

+youran1 Ouch!! I wish I had the Euro powered M but my car is still very capable. The LSD and larger motor do make a difference over the 328 but it really doesn't have the purests' M motor.
@TheRipePunani
@TheRipePunani 9 жыл бұрын
+Brian Kamak Don't feel so bad about it. The Euro motors were handmade and would have cost too much to certify for EPA regulations at the time. No one was going to pay over $50k for a BMW at the time, even if it had the Three Liter Heater (I like calling the S50B30 that lol) and 6 speed. BMW M wasn't as established in North America in the 80s and 90s...most people would have balked at the sticker price of a $50k+ M3 when they could spend a few thousand more and get a Porsche 911. Everyone in the '90s new what Porsche and the 911 was and were about. Now times have changed. Edit: Love your E36 btw. Slowly turning my '92 325 into a track slut as well...got a ZF from a '95 waiting to be swapped. Just looking for a 3.38 LSD. :)

I had one of these for 14 years with a ton of well sorted mods, and it was so much fun as a dual-purpose track and street car. They feel so much lighter and more nimble than the later M3's. The best part was passing by folks in their new hardware at tracks like Sears Point and Laguna Seca who didn't know the car, and having them stop by during the day to ask what the story was.

Great car, knowledgeable owner. E36 M3s make great track cars and are super under-rated in general. I do, however, wish Matt would interrupt his guests less and let more knowledgeable guys like this share a bit more about their car. Overall, one of the better One Take videos!

Very cool to finally see an E36 on here! :D Have a 318iS myself(with a limited slip), love it to bits even if it only has 140 hp(it's only my second car, and my first rwd car at that), and it's loads of fun. I'm really glad Matt liked it as much as he did. Hopefully in the future I'll have the money and skill to either throw in a 6-cylinder or supercharge the 4-cylinder it has now. :) Also cool to see the owner so enthusiastic about it.

Love this car. I have the 328i convertible which is heavier, less rigid, and of course less powerful (although I have some mods taking it to around 220-ish hp) but with a properly built suspension setup is still a lot of fun even in this form. Mine is not a track car of course being a convertible, but I do take it to the local twisty mountain roads often and it eats all the MX-5s alive, had a great run with a stock GT86 as well. Input is great, sound is great (especially without the roof), throttle response is great, brakes needed an upgrade but now they're also great - I would love to have more power and less weight but the roofless experience makes up for that. Amazing and very underrated cars.

Technically VANOS is not like VTEC. The US spec M3, with a MS41.2 ECU, the VANOS is mapped to be car speed dependent. In any condition the VANOS switches off at about 5,000 RPM as any revs above it doesn't help with the torque. In European MS41.0 equipped M52, its engine speed dependent rather than car speed, it deactivates at about 4600 rpm. It's an oil pressure activated solenoid, where it can advance the intake camshaft between 20-45 degrees, depending on the engine. Unlike VTEC, it doesn't affect the valve lift, which is where the power increase in the upper revs really helps. Cool car!

Thank's Matt! Ive been waiting for an E36 for months , I recently purchased one and surprised not to see one on your channel with the exception of that electric one you drove.. My last car was a 95 Mustang Cobra & I haven't quite gotten used to the lack of torque. I'd like to see a E46 M3 next to see how they compare! I wonder if those don't require as much Rev's. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for another ripper episode boss, keep them coming. I reckon you do the best all round tuning reviews, especially when you do so while having some fun in said vehicle. I know it's all off the cuff but after watching a few episodes not only the stat side of things but I kinda get an idea as to how things 'seem' to behave in a real world way. The E36 family is actually starting to climb in the price range. Experts say that really good examples could reach M3 E30 prices in a few years. At least for the EU-versions. So sad that the US one's only got 240 hp instead of the 286/321. And: Come on guys he is really into his car, this show is about the car and it's owner and I'm happy with him talking so much about it. Ok yes he repeated himself a few times but that's totally not ruining the video for me.

+daniel blake HI Daniel, If you do get one as your first car you won't regret it! Just remember a few things to watch for to make sure you are spending your money wisely: 1. Maintenance before mods (true for all cars), Engine Oil, Gear or Transmission oil/fluid, diff fluid, air filter, plugs, wires and coils 2. Reinforce the rear strut towers www.turnermotorsport.com/p-191-e36-z3-strut-tower-reinforcement-plates-pair.aspx 3. Replace the engine and trans mounts, chance are they have never been done and the liquid filled ones are most likely dried out 4. Water pump, the plastic impellers break, if you plan on learning auto x or road track upgrade the entire cooling system Regardless of what you buy, please create a wheelwell.com account and stay in touch!!

+TrackCarRuns oops, just checked build thread, you've done the x brace, i'd really recommend H&R ARB's, made a massive difference too, go nicely with those coilovers :D

+TheSmokingTire can you please do 30fps on the road-facing camera? 60fps makes it seem like you're driving slow haha

BMW vanos is not like Vtec lol the vanos was intended to create more torque at lower end, while vtec creates another cam profile for higher rpm. 2 different system with 2 different goals. Their ways of controlling variable valve timing is also completely different.

It sounded like they were arguing over each other half the time hahaha Besides that, for a 10k E36, it's a nice car.. but then it would be, it's got that M badge.
