These first-generation R32's are quite the collectors item in the Volkswagen world, and this high-mileage example has been tastefully modified to up the performance to make this particular example a fine canyon carver.

My friends MKIV Jetta GLI smells like crayons. Couldn't put a name to the smell until Matt mentioned it haha.

Can confirm. Have owned 2 mk4 Jettas. Both smell like Crayons. Especially when they heat up in the summer!

@@LangersVW i love the sound of my VR6 but shes in the shop getting a major checkup:( found metal particles in my cookant and whenever i fill the coolant, half of it leaks instantly through im guessing the crack pipe or a bad oil cooler, its a 2001 GTI GLX 12V 5 speed

@@LangersVW itll be done by Friday, dry rotted hoses and the crack pipe has nasty corrosion, thermostat housing upper and lower are also shot, basically 60% of the entire cooling system is getting replaced so repair bill racks up to $530 US at my local shop, saved money from being the owners sons friend, but hey at least those parts will now be brand new and i can drive my baby again😍 thats what you get when you have a Mojave Beige VR6 that was only 4 grand

That is what I heard too but the TST podcast producer says it's something to do with the sweating from the HVAC system and it's leaking or such sweat. (Haven't heard those claims in awhile so I could be off but he says it's not the glue)

It's not the vr6. They had a vr6 engined GTI but the r32 is a different engine.

KillianoC Amigo VR6 GTI is the same 15° angle between cylinders that have 2.8L 12v,2.8L 24v and 3.2L 24v VR6 engines!!! all those engines called VR6,the only efferent is engine displacements size.cams,valves,R32 have last generation with 15° original VR6 engine:)) after that they start the produce 3.6 VR6 and 3.6 FSI VR6 with 10.6 degree cylinder angle!!!! Read little bit before put comment

KillianoC huh. The R32 uses a 24v 3.2L VR6. Mk4 GTI's had a 12v 2.8L VR6 from 99-02 then a 24v 2.8L VR6 starting from 2003.

You're definitely right. The VW community holds the Mk4 R in very high regards. Even though they are 11 years old now, low mileage R's from 04 are still going for near $20k. They're amazing machines. And from everything I've read on forums the engines are rock solid. People have surpassed 250k having to only do normal maintenance as Zach described. Thanks for shedding some light on a little known jewel in the Mk4 .:R32 Matt.

I really like this gen of the R32. We didn't get them here in Canada, but a buddy of mine imported one and boy was that thing fun. Gotta love the sound of that VR6 engine.

i miss my mk4 R32. I traded that in for a 2010 wrx, then traded that in for a 2013 wrx and now I have a Mk7 Golf R in manual transmission. i do plan on getting another mk4 r32 sometime in the future, im still getting used to the mk7 but the mk4 as of now was the best and most fun car I have ever driven.

I've never seen this in the U.S. I think it's a courtesy that is done in the canyons around LA because they attract so many enthusiast drivers. Definitely not he norm.

Crying Rogue yes you do, in Scotland it happens quite often, sadly I don't go to scotland that often, also if you ride a bike through london, over half the vehicles will move to the left to let you through

One of my neighbors had one of these with dsg. It was the only car with loud exhaust I didn't mind in my neighborhood. They sound amazing for a six-cylinder.

I absolutely love the Seats in the MKIV R32! The US version went soft for the MKV R32... excluding the recaro seats... making no manual transmission version... etc.

Wax inside a lot of the plastic parts. Forget the reason why they used it but I didn't mind it. Maybe because I got used to it in my MK4 GLS 2.slow and now I miss my first car.

I remember this car so well in 04 I was 21 and walked into my local dealer and fell in love with this car. I wish I could have walked out of there that day with it. I still get excited about these cars when I see them on the road.

Matt, the Crayon thing is Beetles. Sincerely a former VW Service Adviser They used a wax rust prohibitor/sound deadener that unfortunately...smelled like crayons when it started to outgas.

Car looks super composed in the corners! The way that one went through the corners seemed a lot more "fluid" in the way it connected them than some other cars you've tested. Sure looked extraordinarily quick from this end.

been loving these vids. i followed your advice about tires -> suspension -> brakes -> then power or whatever the hell it is, so far got yokohama s drives on my otherwise stock 01 civic and hot damn the car has woken up. i liked driving before, but it is an absolute dream now. i am going to save up for suspension now, and i want to do a rear disc brake conversion from an acura (drums suck). thanks for creating these videos i'm now constantly on the look out for good twisty roads

After riding in her friend's older new beetle, my sister asked if my car (2012 GTI) smells like crayon. I could only respond "not yet". I have also driven a friend's mildly tuned MKIV R32, and I completely agree the engine sound is great. While I didn't get to drive it hard on a good road, it did feel quite different. Everything, the shifter, the steering, etc just felt so much more mechanical, and I don't think it was just because it is 2 generation older.

Still have my MK4 R32! 89,000 miles since new, still THE BEST sounding car for under 50k, and yes a nice linear power band. Still, looks, feels and even smells like new :)

Just thought I'd let you all in as to why older model year VWs smell like crayons. The frames of the older volkswagens were coated with a wax resin to protect the frame from corrosion. That coating is made of the same make up as crayons. When its hot out the coating heats up and obviously smells, and the smell does linger forever after that. Cheers.

great car, i used to see this guy in orange county alot before he got he hood painted, nice to see its as well sorted as it looks. the crayon smell is a sealant used to prevent corrosion from the sea air. on hot days it leaks out of the doors and you can see it running down the sills.

I've never heard that crayon smell in a VW before but now that he mentioned it, my sister's beetle has a pretty distinct smell of crayons I always thought the car had a weird smell in it but I could never put my finger on it till you mentioned it lol.

Cuseball121 No, there has never been a Mustang-engined Range Rover. The 4.6 Range Rover is a bored and stroked Buick 215 from the early 1960s. Rover used it for 35 years in various forms, and it's a lovely little thing - and it was used in myriad saloons, sports cars, 4x4s, etc - rather like the Chevy 350ci was in the USA. All-alloy, overhead valve, pushrods. It was replaced in the Range Rover initially by the BMW M67B44, later the Jaguar AJ-V8 in 4.2, 4.4 and more recently 5.0 forms - mainly supercharged, although the 4.4 was N/A.

Dude! The radiator fans are an issue, but here's the thing. I work at a VW dealer and every time the radiator fan goes bad we replace both fans. Mine just went bad, but the secret is that you have a blown fuse that prevents them from turning on. So check your fuses.

Hey Matt I can confirm for the Crayola smell going on in a VW. I had a jetta 1.8t Wolfsburg 2001 and it was the first thing I noticed when I got in the car.

Crayons!! My old MKIV GTI had that scent. I believe it had something to do with the interior materials they used. The 99.5-05 Golf's and Jetta's had that smell.

I am curious to know how many of your fans have bought their tires from your recommendation. Some of your One Take folks mentioned they bought them because of you. I work at a dealership and can confirm the crayon smell in old VW's is VERY real. Also a lot of old BMW's, Mercedes, Range rovers and other things get it for some reason.

If you're a car enthusiast, especially VW, you gotta own one of these while they're still around. I bought a 2013 VR6 CC because I wanted the sound but also the comfort and modern tech, but a Mk4 R32 is my next move. I hope I can still find a well maintained blue one.

Most of the old VWs i've ever been in smelled so strong of crayons. My 02 Jetta VR6 stunk and my 01 Audi A6 smells of it too. You learn to love it.

Crayon smell has to do with the firewall sound/heat coating they used on the 2.0 liter and TDI engined MkIVs. The 1.8Ts and VR6s used a different coating that does not smell. *The more you know star* :D

Mathew Clark might be different for later years. I have an 05 mk4 gli and after not using it for a while, the first thing I notice when getting in is the crayon smell

I agree with the crayon smell Matt. My girlfriend had a MK4 Jetta that reeked of crayons. No air freshener would ever get rid of the smell. I heard that it was the glue that was used in the dashboard..Not sure how true it is though. Regardless, pretty funny that you mentioned it haha

dude you are absolutely right about Volkswagens smelling like crayons you are the first person I've ever heard say that I was just telling a friend at work that just bought a 2003 Jetta when he rolled down his windows and we're both at a stoplight in separate cars you can smell the reeking of crayons pouring from his car and he smokes cigarettes in his car!! funniest crap ever I appreciate you making me laugh haha.

Can confirm the Mk4 Crayon Scent. It's the wax or adhesive that they used in the interior that gives off the distinct smell lol.

Lol, yeah, that crayon smell is mainly with mark 4 Jettas from what I've seen. I owned two mark 4 GTIs and they didn't smell like crayons. But the Jetta I owned did. The Jetta had cloth interior while the Golfs both had Leather. Maybe it was the cloth seats? I think I heard it was something in the flooring though, not sure.

From what I've read, the smell of crayons is from the underbody coating they used from the factory. It is a waxy substance that they used to protect from salt, etc..
