The C8 Corvette Z06 is one of the finest American cars ever engineered. A fundamentally reverse-engineered Ferrari 458 Speciale but even better, the Z06's showpiece is the high-reving European-style Flat Plane Crank LT5 V8 making 670 hp - more than any other naturally aspirated production V8 in history! There's also the brilliant ride, razor-sharp handling, and a whole lot more!
GM provided the vehicle, insurance and a tank of gas for this review.

The LT5 from the 90's ZR-1 was NOT engineered by Mercury Marine. It was BUILT by Mercury Marine because GM didn't have the production capacity for an all aluminum V8. The LT5 was engineered by Lotus, whom GM had a stake in at the time, based on some of the designs for the Lotus Etna concept car.

Personally I was never a Corvette fan until the C8 came out. In 2021 I purchased a new 992 C2S when they were still priced somewhat non ludicrous and discounts could still be had. That same car in the same spec now would be $150k. Have owned 2 different C8’s since then, a coupe for less than half the price of my 992, and now a hard top convertible for half the price. Bottom line, the C8 (even the base) has way more character for street driving than a 992 C2S. Forget the base C8, a Z06 can be had for less than a C2S! Porsche makes great vehicles no doubt, but it’s insane to pay such a premium. It’s sad that Porsche decided to crap on the middle class with the 911. They don’t want your business for the 911 if you are middle class, they only want the uber rich. As someone who has had to work for every penny I have, no problem Porsche, message read loud and clear. I’ll be just fine😉

Close your eyes 😄 As for the interior complaints, it's the best ever Corvette interior and the first one since the mid sixties to actually make me want a Corvette rather than something else. The buttons in between the seats, I think it's fab, and easy to use, no need to stretch, very ergonomic. The passenger can reach all of their controls easily, too. The sound system, not so much. That's nit picking, though.
@Piketom1
@Piketom1 Күн бұрын
At first I was put off by the design of having all the buttons on the wall in the car, that design just looked really weird. Now that I have been living with a car (2024 Volvo) that puts all that functionality in the main touch screen, I've completely changed my mind. Even though the infotainment in my car is fast and intuitive, I still have to take my eyes off the road to access many of the functions that Corvette puts in that row of buttons. Once you own the car the placement would become muscle memory and that is just better IMO.

Excellent review. You can tell by the look on both of your faces that this is definitely an "experience" that not alot of other cars can compare to. I think Matt mentioned before when driving this that it feels, very clearly, like GM STARTED with the Z06 when developing the new Vette and worked backwards for the regular car. Bravo GM. I hope these stand the test of time and wonder what the ZR1 is going to be like.

One of the few modern cars that I would seriously be considering if I was in the market for the best drivable sports car experience at this price point or above. The Z07 package is overhyped, unless you're really focusing hard on frequent track work -- Obviously it's brilliant for performance but carbon wheels and stiff suspension do not a good road car make. I also personally think the Z06 looks better with less aero and wings tacked onto it. Get the one that makes you want to drive it as frequently as possible and you will not be disappointed.
@markw9512
@markw9512 2 күн бұрын
Agreed. I skipped the Z07 because I’m not gonna be tracking it, but honestly even without it it’s so damn good it would waste most anything out there on a track anyway. I have the same option on mine as this one, the ground effects with the extended front spoiler and the wider side splitters, which with the rear wicker bill give it a bit of extra presents but not as wild as the Z07, which to me is a good thing. Suffice to say I am glad I did not get the Z07, as this spec is perfect for me and I wouldn’t want that stiffer ride from the firmer suspension.
@danieldickerson4838
@danieldickerson4838 Күн бұрын
Apparently the Z07 is a sweetheart on the street. Yeah it’s obviously considerably stiffer, but if you put PS4s on it, it’s genuinely fine to drive on the road. It’s not like a ZL1 1LE that will indeed rock your shit on less than stellar roads, as that car is dead set focused on track work. You just get the added benefit of having one of the fastest production track cars ever made with said Z07 package. That’s the trim I would personally get, because I would use it for track duty, but the non-Z07 package cars are no less *brilliant*, and even more comfortable and daily drivable.

I have to say, Matt and Zack could do better. That blue Z06 (CA Mfg. plate 45257) has been making the rounds in California for a while. In fact, I had three days with it about a month ago. While I shared some of Matt/Zack's opinions, both pro and con, of the car, I have to point out some errors that, IMO, somewhat reduce the credibility of that particular KZfaq driving impression. Let start with the first generation LT5 used in '90-'95 ZR1s. It was designed by Lotus (at the time owned by GM). It was developed jointly by Lotus and GM. It was manufactured by Mercury Marine. GM picked Mercury for manufacturing because 1) GM engine plants were not positioned for-and not interested in-manufacturing of such a short run of engines, 2) Mercury had experience with large aluminum die castings which, at the time, was experience that GM lacked and 3) Mercury had quality control resources that GM, at the time lacked, such as statistical process control (SPC) and coordinate measuring machines (CMM). Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix Brakes...both Matt and Zack and I drove the same car over some of the same roads as did I: SR2 Angeles Crest Highway, Upper Big T and N3 Angeles Forest Highway. Zack thought the brakes were fading. Over the same stretches of highway, I did not experience brake fade, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt-maybe they drove harder than I. If that's the case, I suspect they didn't have pad fade. They maybe boiled the brake fluid. Or, maybe the carbon brakes were not bedded properly. The company that manages GM's media fleet in L.A. might not have taken the time to properly bed those brakes because the process is time-consuming and requires driving at high speed. They said the LT6 has "titanium valves" and "titanium pushrods". I heard that and laughed spitting coffee all over my three displays. Only the intake valves are Ti and the engine is freakin' DOHC and, thus, has no pushrods. Zack says, "...revs to 86 hundred, max torque and power, 86 hundred.." You guys need to do your homework before shooting any footage. Actually, the LT6 torque peak is at 6300 RPM, its power peak is at 8400 RPM and its rev limiter is at 8600 RPM Their comparison of a base Z06 with a car equipped with Z07 which, IMO, is not "super stiff" as Matt suggests. Z07's spring rates are only about 10% higher than a std. Z06 and I suspect that's more to deal with the Z07s' higher downforce than it is to improve handling. That option also has a specific MagnaRide calibration and those fabulous Michelin PS Cup 2R tires. Come on guys! You have over a million subscribers. For action footage, can't you do better than the same shots of the car speeding back and forth past the videographer? You've obviously invested in a GoPro or two. Why not buy a mid-priced DSLR and a telephoto lens and, at least, give us more fast action footage...like the car coming at the viewer exiting a turn? Dudes! Loose the merch commercials, ok? KZfaq splices enough ads into your videos already. Lastly, regardless of me bitching out the video, with one million subscribers and you guys gushing over that in-your-face, blue Z06, I would think GM appreciates the exposure.

As a Gt3 owner, hate to rain your day but Gt2RS is way more respected than the gt3rs…. Same with the ZR1 vs Z06 . But the Z06 is still an awesome car.
@theguy1224
@theguy1224 Күн бұрын
@@vince7128 I mean maybe on the porsche forums but from what i see, it's GT3RS this 3RS that. Car makers putting a a target on the 3RS for track times. I don't see car makers saying, this car is built to run faster than a 2RS. The reason being is that it's too easy with FI. That's where the 3RS and cars like the z06's are most desired. I guess respected isn't the right word all the time but desired. For me i would rather have a 3RS over a 2RS. If i wanted an FI porsche, it'll be a turbo s. I thought about getting on the list for a ZR1 but i don't want FI, i rather hear something like the LT6 in all it's glory in factory form when you can't believe how GM even accomplished something like this in todays day in age. When people have gone hybrid, EV, turbo etc. That's why the z06 would be most desired when the C8 generation is done.

You are right to compare it with the 458 because it basically IS a 458 made in America. GM literally bought a wrecked 458 engine and reverse engineered it, built it with a little bit bigger crankshafts,...
@markw9512
@markw9512 Күн бұрын
Nope, they benchmarked it. Big difference. They had already designed the engine and built prototypes when they bought that motor, and they explicitly stated that they bought it just to check how the Ferrari dealt with vibration because the larger 5.5 L motor has bigger vibration issues than the 4.5 L used in the Ferrari. And also, newsflash: Ferrari did not invent the FPC V8, which was first introduced into mass production by Cadillac in 1918, nor did they pioneer its usage in modern racing applications: this was done by an American company, Novi racing, in the early 1940s for Indy racing, 30 years before Ferrari began using FPC V8s. The FPC V8 was also adopted by Coventry climax out of the UK, Lotus, and Alpha Romeo well before Ferrari started using it (do you suppose Ferrari benchmarked these motors before building theirs?). Nor did they pioneer the use of mid engine V-8 sports car, that was released by Ford several years earlier as well as Alpha Romeo, and Corvette had built mid engine V8 prototypes in the mid to late 1960s, several years before Ferrari, and wanted to build it, but senior management axed the idea. So stop acting like Ferrari invented all this stuff and people are copying them, it is simply not true. They were copying others by using your definition long before Corvette adopted an FPC V8.

I looked up Balls to the wall meaning. Balls to the wall was first attested in the 1960s in the context of aviation, in reference to ball-shaped grips on an aircraft's engine controls (typically throttle, prop pitch and fuel mixture). Pushing these "balls to the wall" would put the engine at maximum power. Analogous to pedal to the metal. Not exactly what I was thinking. I was thinking more of the scene from Godfather one with the gentleman and the woman.

It’s amazing what Chevy accomplished with the C8 and especially the Z06! I would seriously consider buying one if they had just done a better job on the styling. This is the only let down on the car in my opinion. But such an important one because the styling is what connects with people first. I have a feeling that the reason why they didn’t accomplish better on the looks of the car is because the suits/bean counters probably put too many limitations on the design team.
