Zac Mertens (@Mister_Zachary) was the literal voice of HOONIGAN. Among loud cars he was even louder, as he was one of two people (alongside Corey Hosford) who would MC the HOONIGAN Burn Yard shows. He's also known for his love of doing big burnouts in loud square body trucks, rating the idle of people's cars, hurting his back jumping a car in the original HOONIGAN burn yard, and rolling a borrow CAN-AM.
Zac's story is an inspiring one. Long before he was the cowboy-hat wearing face on KZfaq, he joined HOONIGAN as an editor, eventually rising to become head of post-production. Then he became the Marketing Director of HOONIGAN Racing Division where he worked alongside Ken Block.
Today we talk about going REALLY fast in a boat; amazing engine architecture; how to upset your HOA; crazy tricks in heavy machinery; that Miata jump; why concrete is cool; how loud is too loud; Burnout Wars; motorcycles; and more.

This has been one of the most entertaining and fun TST podcasts I’ve seen in a while man, Zac is a fucking riot. I came expecting the usual, listen to car stuff and have a good time. Respectfully I never thought I’d really give a crap about boats, concrete, Kid Rock and Kubota because I don’t know anything about those 4 things, but this shit is tight man I love it!! hope to see Zac on future TST episodes

@25:25 hey Zack - you can use the keyboard controls to skip through a youtube video, it's a ton easier than using the pointer to try and hit the seek bar. The arrow keys skip by 5 seconds, the J and L keys skip by 10. K pauses. M mute. C captions. When paused, period and comma advance frame by frame. There are a whole series of shortcuts!

Great episode. Zac is best when he's not screaming at the camera, IMO. Please don't let the vocal minority of people saying "stick to cars" get to you. We like hearing about how people arrived at car enthusiasm instead of "oh thats cool, oh thats cool, oh thats fast, oh thats slow"

Zac’s personality transcends generations, he’s not some niche TikTok asswipe. Guy is a genuine article that you enjoy following to learn more about. He can teach you how to build your first Harley, while nerding out over your dad’s pickup, while quite possibly pulling your hot aunt’s number on the way out 😂🤙🏼

I'm somewhat surprised, but mostly glad to learn that Matt and I share a common history of having piloted unattended construction equipment as a teen in the '90s. I definitely had fun roaming around construction sites as a kid and operating cherry pickers, bulldozers, etc. That's what you get for leaving the keys in them!! 🤣

Never had a cammed car but my son’s high school had speed bumps in the driveway. For four years each time and for all the bumps I braked the front tires so they would screech down the backs side of the bump. One of my proudest moments…

This is an amazing podcast. Listening to 40 something year old men talking about laundry and cleaning, as me, a 40 something year old man, is folding the families laundry 🤣....... Also my wife has recently started a project managing job for a large international company and her last project was in construction. And she was complaining how dull a 2 or 3 hour meeting on concert was. Then you guys talking about how cool a concrete convention is. The best!! 👌🤙

That’s exactly how I explain a kid rock performance. I was at a show in St. Louis in 2004 working the event and would have never gone to see kid rock but had to and it was exactly like Zach said. He just does it all and it’s really good. Nothing like it. Rush is another one I would never see that I saw that blew me away.

Had a 440 Cuda with the stock 268/284 cam. Wasn't easy to quietly exit friends places in the early AM hours. Also had 5.0L Foxbody with 2 chamber Flowmasters. Friends Dad asked me to push it down the street aways before leaving at 3am...like his brother's friends did with his Bronco

The all electric accesories thing the new 911 hybrid does and don´t needing a accesories belt isn´t new. Toyota Prius are like this for years already because you´ll need a electric driven A/C pump when the ICE is off in EV mode and switching to a electric water pump was only a small step further.

I lost count of how many elitist douchbag jabs that the host of the show made. I was reslly trying to listen to Zac speak but it was apparent the host was much smarter and more wealthy than anyone on the planet. Those were two very different characters at the table.

Matts just being Matt. Love him or hate him it’s his show and at least he plays his cards openly. He’s a New Porsche guy and Zac’s a 1000hp Truck guy so yes there were two different characters on the show. You clearly relate to one but not the other, but did you see them getting angry with each other like you’ve gotten angry? No, they actually had a great rapport. Inverted-snobbery is a mental burden that just weighs you down, gotta let it go bro….
