Extra tips for helping a child or toddler with suspected apraxia of speech talk... PRACTICE, PRACTICE PRACTICE and PRAISE trials (whether there are successful or not!) Keep your child motivated to practice speech sounds at home by providing positive reinforcement! Once your child masters a vowel... add that vowel to other consonants to improve your child's motivation through the success of the vowel!
Be patient! Progress will happen and sometimes it takes a long time for any progress.. but then BOOM! The words start coming one by one in full swing and it was all worth it in the end!
Don't give up! You can do it! Consistency is key!

I wake up every morning with my 3yr old son's speech on my mind. I've been trying to find ways to encourage and teach him while working from home. Your videos are so unbelievably necessary for parents like me right now! I can't thank you enough for doing these videos. Are there any play/practice activities that you suggest as well? Also just in case you didn't know, YOU ARE ESSENTIAL!

You made my day! I find that SIMPLE games are best for the little ones! (banging with a toy hammer and saying BANG BANG BANG, putting things on your head and sneezing them off, falling down, singing songs and letting them fill in the blank, playing hide and seek and saying "boo!" playing with magnets (i have a video on this!) and/or playing with a barn/pretend play and creating a routine (I have a video on this as well - how to play with your child!) and/or during bath time just incorporating trials! My 3 year olds like less of structured games and more of unstructured interactive activities, like blowing a balloon up and letting it go and incorporating a targeted word or two! LMK if you have any specific sounds/word questions! and thank you again for making my day and more so for being a wonderful parent and trying to work with your little one at home!

Ahhhhhh. The word apraxia was thrown around today after therapy and I came home and dug deep. I promised myself I would only find positive, inspiring words and YOU girl are hitting the mark. Thank you. I Cant wait to try some of these.

"Unstructured play" (at least he thinks so😁) has been instrumental in his progress. Really can't thank you enough. You're a gem.❤

My son has been "suspected" to have apraxia. He'll be two Sept. 3. Due to his age they claim that they cant officially diagnose him, but that she'd bet alllll her marbles that's the issue. I have watched at least 20videos, downloaded 2 apps, cried thousands of tears--- yet you my dear have made me smile. It gave me hope. You started the video with a bright smile, and stated not to worry it can be fixed. God bless you!!

@samedifferenceent you made my day! Keep your chin up! This is my favorite diagnosis to work with because the progress makes it all worth it! You can totally do it and keep a smile on your face because I promise, it WILL get better! I treated a child who was 3 years old and could only say "duh" for everything! Had never used another sound/vowel/word... and in 6 months, with 3 times per week therapy, he was saying "I want donut!" and he was THRILLED to be able to communicate and kept working hard at home even after therapy was over! So happy you found these videos!

Thank you so much. My daughter is 2.5 and has recently been assessed for speech apraxia. She has more words now how ever she is not consistent with constants for example she says Go then next time is Do or Gah. We find some words are easy for her to say but others are a struggle, especially the L sound. We were told drill therapy will help her, however her attention needs to be more sustained to benefit

I wish you could work with my son. He has suspected apraxia and doesn’t seem like the speech therapists available to me right now are very experienced with patients with it. You made me feel a lot better about it though because google made it seem like it wasn’t something you could really fix and high possibility of never talking clearly. Thank you for the education!

New subscriber here. I have a son who was diagnosed with CAS and Autism. He is still non verbal. He goes to speech therapy 3 times a week. Thank you for this video. I will definitely going to apply this. He has no words yet, he just babbles and not saying any clear sound. I am hopeful that one day he can at least say a word.

Thank you SO much! My daughter has been in speech for almost 3 years .... nothing has really been working. We just got an Aproxia of speech diagnosis (from a psychologist) and I'm trying to find a therapist near us that has experience and so far NOTHING. We already homeschool so I guess I'll be doing speech therapy for a little while, this really helped, I'm glad I found your channel!

My daughter (5 years old) just got diagnosed (about a week ago) with Apraixa of Speech. This video was helpful to me to know how to help her. Thank you for putting it together. Hello, I'm reaching out because my husband had a stroke 2.5 years ago. I noticed you had videos on Apraxia. I can see how some of the videos could help me with him. While he has been in the nursing home and has received therapy he has basically refused speech therapy. I have been able to teach him a few sounds before the pandemic. I'm going to bring him home soon, and was wondering if you had another KZfaq channel that concentrates on stroke victims? I will tell you the idea to hold a goldfish to increase tongue strength is amazing. So excited to try this when he gets home.

I'm so sorry to hear of the stroke! Hopefully he will be willing to work with you! I am thinking of doing videos aimed toward adults, so I may do one for Aphasia (keep checking back) but most importantly, just praise him for any attempts, even if they are labored and effortful! We want to keep going when we get positive praise! :) Best of luck to you and your husband

I’m LOVING these videos! They are giving me such confidence and hope! Thank you!! My little guy is 2.5. I’ve noticed that he inverts the vowel and consonant, so instead of saying “mama” he’ll say “ama” or “ada” for dada and “op” for “pop”. He does this consistently, so should I work on correcting it with him, or move on to other consonants he doesn’t have yet, like B, K, and G?

So this is a “phonological process” called Initial Consonant Deletion - it will definitely effect intelligibility. I would recommend exaggerating the initial consonant sound AND use a speech sound hand cue (you can find a free chart on my TPT store or with the link in the bio of my Speech Sound Hand Cues video). Hope this helps!

Wow you have such a contagious fun positive attitude. So grateful that you are making these videos!! My question is - how do you address regression in a child with apraxia of speech? There’s words where she’s said for weeks or months and then suddenly she won’t be able to say them or says the words very differently?

Yes, unfortunately this is typical of children with true apraxia. I would recommend just modeling those words but not focusing on them - continue to build new words to keep motivation high & then try to causally circle back to previously mastered words later.

I usually target "eeee" by doing a water routine with a wash cloth or sponge and say sq"EEEEEE"ze over and over again and when you sqeeze and say "eeeeee" hold it in front of your mouth so they are looking at your mouth - over and over again! try that and let me know!

Hi Kelli, thank you for all the great videos. My gdaughter is able to make some sounds, but doesn't say words or talk at all. She has issues beyond a regular kid - a genetic problem and born with a cleft soft palate. She is now in kindergarten and the SLP is only working with her on her AAC device. I'd really like her to get more hand cues and prompts for sounds so she can learn how to use her mouth and train her face muscles. Any language she could pickup would be sooo helpful. Her SLP says statistics show that she will pick up speech on her own just by hearing the words and see the modeling they do with the AAC tablet. I strongly disagree with this, because of her other issues. She responds well to looking in a mirror and I try to work with her with vowel sounds, but she has a hard time figuring out how to position her mouth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You sound excited about it. I dont feel as enthusiastic about it my son has autism and i suspect apraxia but we dont know as they dont know until he starts speaking and he has only pop up words randomly and no attempt at words. He does look like he is trying though sometime. He's 3 and I'm so worried about him. He is more inclined to say the first letter can A F used to say H i e but stopped again

Yes a lot of times these diagnoses can be cooccuring so it should definitely be helpful but try to use high affect and facial movements with exaggerative vowels to help secure attention & improve motivation!

Question: what would be your method working with a 23month baby boy???? Im considering changing my sons therapist im not seeing how their approach is helping him. He is "completely" none veral Except for saying ma'ma. I haven't said anything to them yet because im trying to see if its just because he's only been 3times and they're still developing his plan of action. They just play with him and say "ball" no flash cards no sitting at a desk/table with pictures no hand ques they do teach him ASL but its like he's only at a playdate not therapy. Aaaand he only is scheduled once a week. I feel like it should be at least 3-4sessions a week. Very intense therapy. Not playtime. Is this standard or no???? Pls help me.

O and she has not diagnosed him. She says that she "believes" that he has apraxia, but that she cant test him for it til he is older is this true??? He'll be two next week Thursday. So how are you treating him if you dont know what your treating?????? And if you are treating him as a CAS patient. . . WHY NOT JUST DIAGNOSE HIM WITH APRAXIA😞. IM SOOO STRESSED. ITS HARD ENOUGH DEALING WITH A NONVERBAL CHILD BUT THESE PPL AT HIS SPEECH/OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ARE REALLY DISAPPOINTING ME.

Your videos have done more for his speech than they have. The hand cues work great.

Hey there! It’d hard to say without seeing him myself. A lot of times therapy seems to just be play, because that’s how kids learn virtually all skills. There are 11 “prelinguistic” skills that all kids must meet before talking- I’ll provide a video for you on those, so often times, when a therapist comes in & they are missing one or a few of those skills, it’s more beneficial to fill those in before moving onto “stemming” for words (prompting a child to repeat things, using hand cues etc). Things that early intervention SLPs often target are eye contact, attention span, pointing, identifying objects & items, following simple instructions, etc etc all before trying to get him to use words, so it’s hard to say without seeing him! Check out this video & hopefully this helps! I would agree that he needs more therapy though, check with your state program & explain that this is a very critical age for language development & you believe he needs an increase in therapy due to lack of progress or however you want to word it!

oops...My little granddaughter an undiagnosed speech sound disorder (appt for the end of June), so I have been researching different therapeutic approaches to therapy, which is how I came across your channel fortuitously. I noticed you don't treat the long /o/ as a diphthong. This is a huge obstacle to being understood in English, and is an immediate marker and impediment to natural sounding English. I hope you will reconsider this. In the meantime I'm going to use a hand cue to mimic [oʊ] with a /w/ finish. Do you approve? I would also love to see you treat the exceedingly common flap /t/ and /d/ (and to dispel permanently the notion that it is somehow a /d/ sound ) to help kiddos be able to pronounce /butter/ /ready/ /waiting/ /eating/. It's easy to teach. And most languages have a trilled /r/ so its just a matter of pointing that out. It worked well with my Japanese students, who found this little tip illuminating.
